But it was? Gear has always been random. Grind the same raid boss for 6 months and never get your shield. Vanilla was way more random than the freebie gear we have today.

Not really. Bosses had smaller loot tables with ‘what you see is what you get’ type loot. But thats just raid bosses, as crafted gear didn’t have random stats. Then in later expansions as token and badge gear was introduced, you got what you got without getting a random piece from that token. Dungeons as well went off specific bosses instead of the overall dungeon. To tie this all up BfA forced personal loot on a lot of people, taking even more control out of the hands of the players.
There’s typically been 3 avenues of gear;
Difficulty for stronger gear quicker
Grinding for stronger gear slowly
RNG for strong gear randomly.
The third is always best in moderation, which is probably most people’s issue with the system. No one is arguing that RNG never existed, but rather the amount and how much it effects the system. A point Ion often misses (intentionally or not) during QnAs.
Here’s a 3k+ post thread that you can peruse through that may give you some insight on people’s opinions (good and bad) regarding WF/TF…
Enjoy…
1- It’s a rng gamble to get those items and people feel compelled to get them to be their best.
2- Removes a sense of reward at the higher tiers if you can obtain high Ilvl items from lower content.
3- Because of #2, it trashes the progression of gearing from one tier to the next.
4- Players are too worried about what other players get.
5- One players “Luck” is another player’s “Bad Luck.”
You can easily pick from any of these and they’d be true for someone.
A raid tier is typically 3-6 months, and have several times been over a year.

Looks @Drezwazluz post.
Yeah I was just about to say. Not every raid tier is on an exact schedule. In older expansions we had raids that lasted quite a while before the next one was released.
Whether gear dropped has always been random. Gear itself being random is what we’re discussing though. Those aren’t the same thing and to treat them as such is disingenuous.
No one (or at least no one I’ve seen) has complained about the base drop RNG. Just the layer upon layer upon layer of RNG.
So you don’t hate it?
I was using the royal ‘everyone’.
EDIT: No, I don’t hate it at all. A gear bump is always nice. That said, I don’t care about gear outside of how it looks. I don’t do Mythic+ or raid outside of LFR, so I’m not overly concerned with BiS. I do well enough in pvp that I’m able to take down someone better geared than me, however challenging it is.
I personally dislike it mostly because if I get something that warforged or titanforged in my current level of difficulty, and that WF/TF item is trash for me, I can’t give it to a friend that it is BiS for because of the complete stupidity of a system called Forced Personal Loot.
I see the effort versus reward argument, and looking around I can see that’s a logical argument. For example, GD is calling for heads to roll with the EXP pot exploit because it invalidates effort and time other people had to go through to achieve the same result. So hating on something that gave out a reward you had to work towards seems to be a common agreement on the GD. Makes sense to me.
I do love having a set of gear that once completed (BiS) I can bring other toons to like a guild weekly heroic clear and not worry about missing out on WF/TF drops for my main. It’s a pretty bad feeling.
I also see a double standard when Mythic level raid gear has a very strict and limiting cap to how much it can TF, as opposed to lesser difficulties that can TF to the moon in relation to Mythic raid gear, which is allegedly the hardest gear to get in the game. So, normal gear (or whatever difficulty) can TF to mythic gear levels, but mythic gear levels have stunted potential to WF/TF. That’s super lame and indicative of a broken/flawed biased system.
Looking at my list I guess I’m overall against WF/TF, but not for the reason a lot of people are I suppose.
I put in half the effort and get the same reward as someone who did more then me.
You have 2 TF pieces… Also if you do dungeons for 10 hours is that less effort then someone who raids for 2 hours?
Titanforging was designed in Cata and constantly told by Ion as a way for guilds stuck in raiding to get an upgrade to progress on.
In Legion they gave us Mythic. Why do we still have titanforging?

Totesmlotes:It’s a system to ensure you’re never finished with the gearing process.
I mean… thats a GOOD thing isn’t it?
Because it is a great system that reward redoing content with a chance at better gear? Gone are the days of raid or die or even M+ or die. Time to come to grips with that.
No it does not work like this though. All it does is in between raid tiers cause massive inflation in gear ilvl’s. They had to make the ilvl difference between Mythic Uldir TF gear and Normal BoD to be large enough so that people did not just farm Uldir to gear for Heroic or even Mythic BoD.
This gear jumped had massive affects across multiple areas of the game. They were forced to buff Heroic gear which is now better then what you get in Uldir.
TF killed an entire raid because of how it works.
What level does Mythic in the previous tier normally equal in the next teir? 30 IL difference seems about on par with past raids.
Prior to this system we never had raid gear effectively invalidating prior raids like it does now. It was EXTREMELY common in Wrath for there to be active Naxx raids after Ulduar was released. I tanked more then a few of them.
Gear from the prior raid had a use that was put into the next raid and you could get a minor upgrade.
Now every season you are literally expected to replace every single piece of gear because it is utter garbage now in the new raid. Do you understand the amount of farming that is for multi spec people who do Prot and Ret for example?
Our gear used to be invalidated in an entire new expansion with level increases now it is trashed from season to season. It is not a hard concept to understand why people are rage quiting WoW at the moment and people focus more on ilvl.
Good bit of players will never even see Mythic Uldir until far into the future when you can solo it for transmog and we level 150 or whatever. It is sad how Blizzard refuses to acknowledge a problem they created then fixed with mythic +.
At the rate by the next expansion Blizzard is going to be forced to do another stat squish. We are already 425 ILVLs and not even to Patch 8.2
All they need to do is scrap titanforging and stop balancing raid gear ilvls around it. Keeping this system tells me that a majority of the developers prior to Cata have just gone or have no voice at Blizzard.
