As someone who moderates one of the largest subreddits, dislikes are horrible. They’re rarely ever used for their intended purpose, which was “does not contribute to the conversation”. They’re used just like the flags are for people who have different opinions, proved them wrong, an “i’ll get you back” or for trolling people.
They paint bad pictures.
That doesn’t make any sense. If you’re being blocked out because you’re ignored, I don’t care what you or your alts say. That does not explain how it’s abusable, harassment, etc.
It’s very easy. All you have to do is visit someone’s profile, click the box that says “normal,” click “ignored,” then when it tells you to select a timeframe, type the word “forever.”
Alternatively, if their profile is hidden or whatever, go to your settings on the forums page (click on your top right corner avatar) and select users and add the name manually
This reinforces why I’ve always advocated why the OG WoW forums were so great. They were moderated by competent people and real trolls were banned. They didn’t ban people for having unpopular opinions or disagreeing with others like they do now. There was no armory so people’s opinions were the topic, not “Oh, you didn’t complete X even though it has nothing to do with what we’re talking about? Therefore, your opinion doesn’t count”. And there were no likes/dislikes. It was simple conversation. No persons liking their posts with their multibox alts or people using discord to coordinate mass flagging or downvoting.
This is how a reasonable person would use such a system. Not all people are reasonable. Some people just want to attack someone as much as they possibly can, because they’re vile.
I’m not going to keep arguing this, because it’s one facet I disagree with based on its potential for abuse. The ignore system could be much improved, account wide ignore isn’t one of them. If you hate someone that much then you can manually ignore every character that you don’t want to see.
I do not have to talk directly to you to harass you. There are users on this forum already participating in harassment without directly engaging with the individual, and they don’t need to be enabled.
I would not ignore anyone unless they were beyond terrible because if I ignore someone for a minor argument then any topics they converse in may not make sense. You might see a post that says “I agree, monks should also be given that ability” and will wonder what he’s talking about because you have the person who mentioned monks on ignore.
Ignore too many people and your whole topic will look like:
“LOL that was funny”
“No way bro, anchovies are yucky!”
“You are right, I will try and farm more anima”
“I LOVE that song!”
“I get it now! That’s why the duck was on fire! LOL”
There will be so many pieces missing you wont understand what anyone is talking about.
You actually can see what they’re saying. Their posts don’t “disappear”, they’re replaced with a warning “VIEW 1 HIDDEN REPLY”, and if you click on it you can see what they wrote, even if you’re ignoring them.
Meh, you don’t get notifications if they reply to you or in your thread. And you don’t get to see their posts in a direct manner, they’re just hidden for you so that you don’t have to ‘deal’ with them. But the ignore feature doesn’t make them ‘disappear’ from your forum experience, no. They’re “hidden” if anything.
Okay. Let’s say I decide I really hate you, in particular, hypothetically: for the record, I don’t hate you, and I don’t care enough about anyone on this forum to do this at all.
I’m going to follow you to every thread you post in and talk about what a terrible person you are. “Hey, Forums kicks puppies, they’re so evil”. There are much more creative liars here, I’m not one of them. I can also attack you directly, which sure, you could ignore, but it’s still publicly visible.
Blizzard moderation is terrible and I’ll never get actioned for it, so you decide to post on an alt to get away from me. Except now you can’t, because I’m so dedicated to hating you that I’ve added you to my Ignore list so I can comb through threads to find the Ignored posts and continue attacking you. And now I can add “Hey, this is Forums’s alt, they’re such a coward they’re trying to hide behind an alt”.
Why would you need this?
You have an ignore function built right into your brain.
When you see something you don’t like, you close the window and ignore it.
