If you had to pug a spot for your 3s team

Hypothetical question.

If you and a friend played consistently, and you were willing to pug a new 3rd whenever you were both on

  1. What would your team look like?
  2. What would your roles be?
  3. Would you restrict it to specific classes?

Here’s why I ask. I heal, and I have a few people I play with inconsistently, but I both prefer 3s, and it’s hard to get 3 people on together at once, with time to PVP, and who don’t tell each other they suck.

It seems easier to me to get a consistent partner, and pug for 3s.

Currently, I heal, and I have a good ranged partner, but I’m wondering which role seems to make the most difference in 3s. Melee seem to be gods, but there’s also tons of melee around, and I wonder how much melee carry based on the other two roles supporting. Or if it’s just zugzug to victory.

I need to trust my healer, so off dps could be pugged potentially.

I’ve done the opposite and played with a good dps, got heals from lfg, and hated every second of it. Sure lining up kill windows is nice, but my healer intuitively knowing my playstyle and cd trading is invaluable

I think its comp specific, and some classes have good synergy with each other. For example: Lock/Rsham, Rogue/Mage, Ret/Warrior, Enh/Warr, Priest/Hunter Priest/Feral etc.

You might at first think you want a consistent healer, but once you get into duelist/glad range you will find it’s harder to find 2 dps that have synergy with each other or can fulfill their roles well in the comp you are playing. I think typically you want the duo to be dps and you pug healers until you find one to keep going with. There are plenty of healers in LFG nowadays who are also looking for duo dps.

If it’s just casual capping kind of stuff then one of you should be healer for sure to avoid sitting in LFG for long.

As a healer most of the “teams” I have been on have been duo dps who brought me on board.

Also, it’s never about a single class or role, arena is more about comps. That’s what you should base decisions on. To answer your question though - in low rating I think healer makes the most difference if you can survive and keep your team up through the typical zugzug blow all cds and rush the enemy strategy. After like 1800 I think the duo dps carry harder though if they are good at fulfilling their win condition.

I mean if we’re being realistic;

You want to fill the 3rd spot as a DPS unless you can pug a healer that atleast consistently has some brainpower to listen and adapt.
You also would want to choose any spec that has very easy gameplay, e.g. frost dk. The goals they need to achieve in the games will consistently be the same and are reliably able to achieve them with a bit of adaptation.

But don’t expect pugs that play lock, mage, off meta specs, etc… to perform to the level expected, especially at higher ratings. At lower ratings it generally won’t matter.

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. I’m resto so the healer is dealt with. it feel like ranged are harder to be good with, so just option a free-agent DK, DH, or Warrior.

I guess I’ll try that.
