That’s how I remember it as well. DM instantly became VC once Dire Maul came out.
The reason I don’t like calling deadmines DM is because there are many instances besides LFG where you may refer to the dungeon and Noone would know which one you’re talking about?
“My favorite zone is that one with DM”
“lemme tell you this story about DM last night”
“DM is the worst dungeon in classic”
“I’m next to DM right now”
Which one am I talking about? You have no idea!

This is no different to the sense of bewilderment most of the rest of the world feels when they discover that Americans call a fringe (hair) “bangs”.
It doesn’t make any sense and sounds idiotic because we, culturally, didn’t “grow up” with it.
Some servers called it VC, some servers, where weirdos lived, they called it DM.
We just have to learn to accept the cultural differences.

Just look at deadmines on Wowhead classic and you’ll see all the comments calling it VC. Too many DIRTY ZOOMERS here trying to act like they played in vanilla.

VC is correct for Deadmines as of the time Dire Maul came out. You’re wrong.

If I refer to DM on a forum, you don’t know what I am referencing without context.
“I got my Tarnished Elven Ring from DM last night” = Dire Maul
“I got Cruel Barb from DM last night” = Deadmines
But if I say, “my group wiped over and over in DM last night,” what am I referring to? Different peeps will say different answers.
Using the same nomenclature to refer to different things creates unnecessary multiplicity. When Dire Maul wasn’t around, then DM was Deadmines. Now that it is, DM is a wing of Dire Maul and VC is Deadmines.
In game it really doesn’t matter, shift+click to know.
VC was a neologism, and some peeps aren’t good with change. It’s really not complex.
