I mean works til you get a boss
I know this is now a meme thread, but in good faith I will attempt to answer the question.
In theory, it will open up the option of running the dungeons runs differently. If the primary win condition is no longer “Beat the timer”, then alternative methods, such as a slow and steady pace could work.
If players want to spend 4 hours fighting through a dungeon with 4 tanks and a healer, they can do that. But for everyone that doesn’t want to spend 4 hours, they have the option of doing that to by making a proper group.
It could also open the door to fixing some glaring class design problems but that’s likely beyond to scope of a meme thread.
Have one paladin healer zone out and respec prot for the boss fights and we’re g2g.
It started with death limits for M+. It was a meme thread to begin with.
Bosses still have enrage timers even if the Dungeon doesn’t have one. As a Pally tank, I can solo a world boss, but it takes 18 minutes. With DPS, it takes 3.
It is meme post, but at a deeper level I wonder if players appreciate what a sense of urgency brings to the game. Fast-paced kind of goes with action adventure. I can’t think of many (any?) slow paced action movies. They don’t fit the genre.
Irrelevant when nothing actually kills you becuase you’re a group of 4 tanks and 1 healer.
I appreciate the sense of urgency that the timer brings to M+ at this point in my ever growing philosophy on WoW. It’s there for a reason. It is the primary “difficulty slider” of M+ and everything else flows down from there.
M+ and timers go together, always have, always should.
Perhaps I wish it did not bleed down into everything else so much, but I respect the timer for what it means to M+.
What I want is to have Pillar Peace but that seems as likely as World Peace right now. If we can stop hating each other because we love the game but for a different reason we can unite against the man and bring them to their knees!
I don’t think people want to spend 3 hours slogging through a dungeon with 4 tanks and a healer.
That’s exactly when it’s most relevant. That is the group that would take 4 hours to kill the boss. And even tanks die when they mess up mechanics. So a group without DPS would be a bore to play because everything would take forever and the probability of wiping due to making mistakes increases with time.
It would be possible but miserable to do it, just as it’s possible but miserable to walk from Norway to Spain on foot.
That’s of course assuming the game is designed around the idea of having no timers.
DPS could wea r some stamina gear to survive better. but addfights you’d fall behind and die. Or healer would OOM.
Most dungeons don’t throw auto-1shot mechanics at you, especially for tanks with twice our health pools and 6 defensive cooldowns.
The only ones off the top of my head that will actually kill you are the pull-in from the last boss of Ara Kara (if no immunities or externals) and like… failing the flying parts of Dawnbreaker?
The former of which is like a half step away from being soloable by mobile DPS if they can cleanse poison (see: it’s not a hard fight to do correctly - I see tanks solo it from < 50% to dead all the time), and the latter of which is completely trivial.
Really? You’d fight Sire Denathrius with all those mechanics w/o DPS simply because there was no enrage timer?
It sounds like you fabricated a non-existent situation to try and dissuade Blizz from dropping timers.
As it turns out, Julian was just writing about M+ without timers.
That’s why I said “That’s of course assuming the game is designed around the idea of having no timers”.
Those dungeons were designed with the timers in mind.
If Blizz removes those timers, they will have to change the design to accommodate that change.
Nothing in this game exists in a vacuum. Every change implies a bunch of other changes.
If things are designed differently, then sure, people would still bring DPS.
Too funny.
According to players, M+ with Timers was only instituted because
people had a preferred behaviour of running old style Heroics back in the day faster and faster.
Now the same people are saying that removing Timers will somehow discourage people from running M+ fast at all.
Apparently given the choice people will now choose to go against their preferred behaviours?
The truth; Some people will list their keys as Chill Run and some will list GoGoGo. In other words the only difference will be
more choice.
Reminder the original purpose of having DPS wasn’t to beat enrage timers. It was to win the fight before healers ran out of mana. (This was before high end gearing gave them infinite mana.)
choice to not bring dps ![]()
Meh, tanks do at least half the damage of dps, often more, so even boss fights wouldn’t last more than 6-8 minutes.
They could try designing dungeons more like delves, which are supposed to be soloed by any spec. You know what makes delves easy mode? Running them as tank.
As I said, nothing in the game exists in a vacuum, and every change brings about more change.
Right now PvE has timers (whether it’s the M+ timers or the Raid Boss enrage mechanics), and they design the game around the fact. If they removed timers, they would have to design the game around that reality.
That could take various forms. One way they could achieve that is to make sure DPS players do a LOT more damage compared to tanks and healers, which would increase the value of DPS players to the group, because not bringing any DPS results in fights that last forever and no one has time for that.
Another thing they could do, this one a tad more radical, would be to remove the DPS role altogether and replace it with something else, like “Support” and/or “Debuff” roles. This way everybody does damage, while at the same time everybody is still useful.
