If no timer, why do we need DPS?

DPS = damage per second, not damage at my own pace whenever I get around to it. If we don’t care how long it takes to kill stuff, why bring DPS at all?

There’s a reason all raid bosses have some sort of enrage timer (hard or soft): without timer, there is no sense of urgency. There’s no such thing as a slow-paced action movie.

I’ve been trying to explain that they just need to incentivize speed by implementing a form of cruel and unusual punishment to do so.

More DPS = less time fighting.

Less time fighting = lesser probability of making mistakes and wiping.

To illustrate: You are more likely to make a wiping mistake on a 4 hours fight than on a 5 minutes fight.

I think with the proper algorithm we could find a way to make everyone hate it enough to want to go fast while only having a death limit.

Because sitting there hacking on the same mob for hours on end is boring? I hate timers but I still want to kill things as fast as I can.

I hoped to find others interested in engaging on this particular aspect of “what is the point of DPS in a game mode without timers?”

Felfaadaern is good people and I think just doesn’t want this terrible idea implemented into M+ so he is brainstorming on the worst possible outcomes of such a change.

And he’s mostly right. I just enjoy trawling him a bit.

Well, sure, you can run without DPS, and it’ll just take you two hours to do what should take less than half an hour
