With blizz being unwilling to give soar the full dragonriding treatment and continuing to treat it as lesser, at present it cannot participate in dragon racing on the PTR.
They would have to allow for a ground mount speed movement attached to Soar to give it parity, and the launch animation would have to go (very controversial), but if in War Withing a druid can participate in Dragon races as a bird, but dracthyr, actual dragons can’t, the only solution is… to write angry forum posts in mass until it gets changed!
Druids will be able to dragon ride mid flight instantly, use gathering professions while in bird form, and participate in dragon races. Dracthyr won’t be able to do any of those things while also having fully functional wings.
Does blizz hate dracthyr? You decide! I can tell they aren’t fond of them.

Soar is getting the full dragonriding treatment next week isn’t it?
not full, it has a cast time after which you are launched into the air, just like it is now. If you land on the ground you dismount, and there is a 10 second cooldown.
As well, you can’t dragon race.

The physical model of the drakes is an actual part of the dragon race, I can see why they wouldn’t want to arbitrarily give an advantage. Did Blizz say that druids will be able to, or are we just complaining about things before they happen?
So literally better than regular dragonriding, considering you have a summoning time for that and you have to use a vigor to launch into the air.
The only thing that currently isn’t on par with dragonriding is being able to gather while in form.

I’m also curious as to where Blizzard said that druids would be able to participate in dragon racing, so if anyone has a source that would be fabulous.
Now, don’t ruin this for druids.
I think Monks and Demon Hunters should also get instant flight…

Demon hunters have holes in their “wings” and if they should get it especially monks, then moonkins should get instant flight too WHILE BEING IN MOONKIN FORM because we can flap.

Man this made me visualize moonkin with dragonriding capabilities

Except that druid flight form is a CLASS ability. Soar is a RACIAL ability.
if you give Soar this ability, it would be like giving all NE’s flight form.
I hadn’t thought of that. I wonder if the cast time we have negates it though? Probably not.
drachthyr can only be evokers, evokers can only be dracthyr
remember this.

Good point…
But will it change in the future? I can’t see Blizzard keeping them evoker only for too long.
Don’t mind all that much about not being able to do the races (if druids can then there’s no excuse for us not to be able to though), but we absolutely need Soar to have a ground mount counterpart that enables it to be truly 1:1 with Dragonriding and which we can further use in areas that only allow ground mounts. The Hover animation already exists. Speed it up for the ground mount. If we land hard add an animation where we land on our feet and kind of quickly kneel down with the impact before rising back up into our Hover animation, and if we land softly just have us land into it.
We can still use the take-off animation for the initial mounting.
They changed the cd. It used to start after landing, but in the latest ptr builds it started the moment you press the button.
I do agree tho that they should give it the full DR treatment and allow us to use it on dragon races and Tindral
The new soar is really fun, but as people have said, we’re lacking a ground mount option now.
The easiest solution would be to add a function to hover to kind of work like ghost wolf / travel form: Casting Hover outside of combat will make it permanent with full mount speed until you enter combat / perform any other action. Soar will trigger this when touching the ground.
This would enable us to have a ground mount version for non-flight content aswell as fix the soar “issue” we are facing now.
Could be such an easy “fix”

I’m still not sold on the 10s cooldown. Seems like an unnecessary caveat to the skill. Did a few rounds gathering ore and would run in to the issue of nodes too close together so you wind up waiting to cast Soar again. Same thing if fights are over too quick, you either sit there with your thumb up your butt or try to run to the next pack, knowing full well if it was a normal DF mount you’d be able to get there quicker since there’s no CD.

The cast time for Soar is the same as a cast time for normal dragonriding. Dracthyr hunker down and push up, and mounts just have to zoom in. Only difference is Soar is basically a dragonriding cast with an Ascent tacked on. You can get the same effect if you just use your mount and instantly hit Ascent.
Mounts are still better than some things, and can use some skills and talents that Soar just can’t. The only think that could be called “better” is that the in built Ascent is free, but I surmise that is why they left a cooldown on it at all.
Never run out of vigor anyway, so eh.

So, you can get the same effect by using one more vigor?
Whether you run out or not isn’t the question, getting a free ascent is pretty okay.
And yeah, if there wasn’t a cd you could just spam it I guess… Seems like something they could achieve by just giving it 4 seconds or having it automatically use one vigor if you have it, and if you don’t it would just incur the 10 second cd.
You can get exactly the same effect as using Soar if you summon your dragonriding mount and hit Ascent the second you can, yes.
I would still argue that the benefits of a dragonriding mount outweigh the ability to have a free Ascent on launch, though. Vigor management is basically non existent since it is so plentiful with all the glyphs, and with Soar you lose the ability to get the harvesting bonuses and use skills like Bronze Timelock (which can be helpful for gathering).
There is also the aforementioned fact that you can not race with Soar. The size isn’t even the issue, as some of the other drakes are darned tiny. The races just seem to see you as dismounted means out, and since there is no way to idle in a mounted state with Soar, it is a no go.
All that said, I am still thrilled to finally be able to properly fly with my Dracthyr. Even if it means I have to use a mount to gather effectively or race still.
