The auto-silence feelings > facts system is one of the last nails in the coffin when it comes to player community.
Now that society is as soft as ever and can’t handle differing opinions giving players the power to silence and censor others is complete nonsense!
Blizzard, You have a perfect system in place already for hurt feelings. The ignore system. If a player is constantly offended by everything they can make the choice to ignore others and cut themselves off from the community.
The rest of us who actually want to be part of the MMO community and better ourselves are now being punished because danny dunce over here can’t take being called bad at the game and childishly lashes out mass reporting anyone who disagrees with them.
This type of automated system WILL kill the classic community. Today’s society is not mature enough to be given power over others. So please just let them ignore and move on with their sad lives.

I don’t even care if I’m reported and have a GM find that my actions were wrong. I obviously (even though to me the EULA/CoC is vague) did something wrong.
There should be no way for players to auto-squelch other players.

Giving players admin powers can’t possibly go wrong, especially in the enlightened modern age, when everyone is reasonable and will certainly only report based on actual TOS violations, and not their own personal feelings.

Blizzard, pay me $5000 a month - and i’ll do this single-handedly.
Won’t even be a problem considering players reporting other players is just someone getting their feelings hurt. So i’ll just ignore the report.

I mean I haven’t seen anyone say they plan to report anyone based on feelings alone. Everyone has said they only plan to report people for true violations.

Is this really the hill you want to fight on?

See? OP gets it.
/Ignore. And it works better than IRL, too. You can’t beat that with a stick.

Were you triggered by his statement?..you’re proving him right lol

Crystal clear, in so far as your own naïveté is concerned.
And that’s fine. That’s what you should do if you don’t want to hear what someone is saying.
However there is people who have admitted that they will use the report feature in this situation.
The problem with this is that they haven’t done anything to deserve a report. An ignore? Up to you. But reported? No.

Also low on my care meter, but I don’t talk a lot in world/trade. So it doesn’t affect me.

It’s not so much the report that’s the problem, it’s the immediate consequences. It’ll cause people to report things they normally wouldn’t just because they know they can exploit the system.
If people want to report someone, fine. The GMs will handle it from there. It’s the player-driven squelch that’s going to be abused.

What killed HotS was the match-making algorithm, especially in QM. But the player-policing tools most certainly did not help. Toxic people who report others for not playing the way they would, or not responding quickly etc. is cancer and not what the tools were meant for, because then people become afraid to speak and to play, basically. If Blizzard implements the same in WoW Classic, then it will be a blow.
However.
Simply ignoring people who go out of their way to foul the nest is insufficient. At a certain point, we need the ability to take action, too.
I’m sorry, Blizzard, but I think the only solution is filing a ticket with a GM.

If people with your attitude don’t buy the game, I feel like the problem solves itself.

Oh yes, shame on him for not wanting a system in game that people can easily abuse to silence others, even if that person isn’t deserving of being reported.
Seeing as several people have stated that they intend to use report on people they disagree with, the op has reason to be wary of the system.

This change has absolutely nothing, nothing, to do with stopping people from being racist, obnoxious, or from spamming. Those can be solved by removing the ludicrously low cap on the ignore list which will get filled up in 2 days from /ignoring gold spam bots.
This change exists for two reasons.
- To auto squelch bots that are undercutting blizzard on gold sales.
- To reduce the number of tickets they receive so they don’t have to employ as much customer service.
Right click report fixes these in a way that /ignore never will. I’m not saying it’s a problem that blizzard can’t fix by spending money. I’m saying that they’re not going to fix it by spending money, if they think they can “fix” it by not spending money.
Is the system going to cost them subscribers? Of course. How many times do you need to get squelched for saying unpopular, but not-in-violation-of-tos things before you take your $15/month and go home? But it’s going to come down to simple math.
For any given change (right click reporting, loot trading, sharting, new engine, battle.net integration, etc) if it is projected to save more money by making it than they will lose in lost subscribers by making it, it’s going to happen.
#nochanges on the devs’ whiteboard means no-changes-with-a-net-cost. That’s business. It sucks, but there’s nothing we can do about it.

So what in Thrall’s name does that statistic have to do with wow? What is the reason people in wow need to know this statistic while slaying dragons, building community, and being immersed in the magical fantasy land of Azeroth?
Maybe that is the problem. Try leaving the real world out of Azeroth or in private channels. You guys will see less squelching.
Let me guess. Pitbulls are horrible dangerous beasts that should be put down too right?
Obvious…

Okay I agree such talk isn’t needed in wow, much like politics and religion, however it isn’t a violation of any rule. Simply ignoring the people talking about it is enough. Reporting is supposed to be for those actually violating rules. And that is exactly the point they are making.

saying something with the intent to get a reaction not discuss , is most definitely against the rules.

"### Behavior
Behavior that intentionally detracts from others’ enjoyment (such as griefing, throwing, feeding, etc.) is unacceptable. We expect our players to treat each other with respect and promote an enjoyable environment. Acceptable behavior is determined by player reports and Blizzard’s decision, and violating these guidelines will result in account and gameplay restrictions.
While we encourage you to report players that are behaving in a disrespectful manner, falsely reporting another player with the sole intent of restricting their gameplay is also unacceptable and will result in penalties to your account.
If you’re unsure if your actions violate this code of conduct, reconsider them. We reserve the right to restrict offending accounts as much as necessary to keep Blizzard games a fun experience for all players."
I think the part I bolded is where the disconnect is happening. Player reports do influence what is acceptable and what is not.
So while not against the rules per se but if players feel a topic detracts from their enjoyment they are well within their bounds to say so with a flag.
There is an unwritten rule while drinking with my friends. No political talk. No theological discussions. We know what it can and has turned into. Same thing with those hot button topics in wow. We know where they go and it’s not a few chaps sitting around smoking cigars, drinking brandy, and respecting each others differing opinions.
It’s simple. There’s a time and place for everything. Be aware of who might be listening.
You wouldn’t smack talk your boss knowing his right hand man is standing there. I mean I would mine but I have a cool boss. Not everyone has a cool boss. Lol
Not everyone listening is going to have the proverbial “thick skin”. Procede with caution. /shrug
Idk. Maybe you guys can talk them into a trial period of removing the squelch in classic but that might be opening a can blizz just doesn’t want to open.
I don’t see abusing the system to prove abuse as a way to leverage this though. We see all these posts about people claiming to have been falsely squelched but no one stepping up and saying they have been banned for abusing it. Nor is this CS issue being taken to CS. Where if there are legit cases of abuse it may get some attention. Instead it’s being tried in the court of public opinion by fresh avatars and streamers trying to get views?
Yea sorry bro my gold foil hat is registering some BS on this one.
