My ideas would improve the performance of Frost Mage in PvE situations without affecting PvP.
Frost Mage has incredible burst single target DPS when all cooldowns are available, but doesn’t have great sustain. Frost Mage also has poor AoE and cleave damage because Ice Lance does not yet hit multiple targets and Blizzard pales in comparison to other class AoE. Not only in damage but in the fact that we need to stand still to use it.
Updating Deep Freeze and Blizzard in the following ways should be enough to increase only the PvE viability of a Frost Mage while leaving PvP untouched.
Deep Freeze
Since Deep Freeze doing damage is not a concept in PvP situations, any of the following would increase its impact in PvE situations only:
increase the damage done
reduce the cooldown when it does damage
allow the damage to cleave/splash onto surrounding enemies
Blizzard
Since basically all PvP Frost Mages (and bots) would take the talent Ice Shards (adds a slowing effect to Blizzard and increase the range of Ice Lance), the damage of Blizzard can be increased by a percentage and that increase can be offset by a reduction that is applied by taking points in Ice Shards. Still, Blizzard damage in PvP isn’t really thing because of the ineffectiveness of AoE.
It would also be nice if Blizzard could be cast on an area like Flamestrike instead of being channelled and either put it on a cooldown equal to the duration, or only allow one Blizzard to be active per mage. Again, something that could come standard but is then taken away with points in Ice Shards because a non-channelled Blizzard with slows is OP.
I love frost mages man, it is seriously one of my favorite specs in the game, and part of me would love to see it do well in pve… but I just don’t think classic is the place for big class reworks and major balancing. Sure it sucks if you like the spec, like I said I love frost, but in Cata it’s just a pvp spec.
It’s completely viable as a DPS in PvE. Just like Blood is completely viable as a DPS even though everyone claimed it was being made a tank spec only.
Inb4 someone who doesn’t understand WCL tries to link the stats and can’t comprehend that a spec virtually no one plays isn’t going to be showing anything close to the maximum DPS potential.
In wrath they added glyphs to the things they thought needed changing to not affect pvp. Would be interesting if they added a glyph that reduced/removed the slow effect in order to contribute more damage in some way. Maybe make fingers of frost proc more or something, or reducing the deep freeze cooldown.
I mean… no one is playing it for good reason. You’re just going to get memed on even if it’s “viable” in the sense that killing bosses is not impossible with a frost mage in the raid.
I don’t get why they can’t just code abilities to work differently in PvP…
Yeah, but how much worse compared to Fire is it actually? 10%? 15%? I’m curious because there is no functioning Frost sim and there’s even fewer people playing it than in WoTLK.
I’ve been playing Blood DPS (unholy presence, not tanking at all). Even with our very slow kills it would put me 4th in your latest Halfus kill and 8th alongside your other Fire Mage who parsed a 91 on Magmaw. Would have put me 3rd on your normal Nef kill from June 5th. I wasn’t even close to being the best Blood DPSer in ICC, so if people didn’t just completely give up on it, where could these numbers go in a good guild with better gear on a better player? We’ll never know, because I’m the last guy doing this.
I want to see a single good parsing Fire Mage go Frost for one week to see where the numbers land.
Yeah it’s hard to say since the spec doesn’t even have a working sim.
Does Heart Strike work like Blade Flurry on targets with damage taken amps? Like if you’re HSing Magmaw’s exposed head does it do double damage to the adds?
I think thats a pretty cool idea and blizzard should balance all specs that are bad performing or any that has a huge gap between them , like buff tanks other than bdk to make all more in line.
Why wouldn’t ? At long u don’t nerfs the others specs and dont over buff any bad performing spec i don’t think that’s a problem , since just making stuff that are really bad rn more viable only increase the population and the time ppl spend playing the game .
I think so, I also messed up big time and had no CD’s up for the head. You can see my damage to the head was low compared to other people in the raid. If I saved CD’s, taunted one of the adds to take a single hit to vengeance cap me and we actually had a good kill, I think I could get into the 40k DPS range.
I had 2.87 million damage done to the head and our Ret had 4.4. I really think if people min-maxed this and did some vengeance soaking, you could hit crazy numbers as Blood DPS. Just no one is trying, literally no one besides me.
