A few weeks ago I saw in the forums someone talk about Iconic weapons for each faction. like a sword and shield with the insignias on it but not the ones from the trading post. However it was only available while leveling in prepatch. Was this ever verified? because I’m not finding it anywhere online. Or was it just a troll thread?
Another thing to notate fyi. People are saying in wow head comments they are getting better luck at the blue gear from level 10-25 almost as if the percentile drop rate gets lower the higher the level you are. Maybe pausing your XP is smart while farming these.

Recruits Sturdy shield seems to be the most iconic item people are talking about. Meaning either the insignia just looks that good with the color scheme or its a very low drop rate…Or both.
I at least wasn’t trolling. I take shield tmog very seriously <3 To my knowledge the recruit’s gear could only be gotten from the pre-patch event leveling from 10-70.
WoW Head had an article about this. Some of these mogs, for the capes specifically, do have very similar (if not identical) from PvP Vendors (iirc, not sure the source but I recall a thread talking about similar models to the recruit mogs). But as far as I know for the Recruit’s Shields (different from the TP ones), they could only be gotten from the Pre-Patch echo event.
Some of the recruit’s stuff is from previous pre-patches, so I suspect this stuff will show up again for the next pre-patch in 18 months.
At least for me, most of my cape drops were from toons in the 50s-60s. Not sure if the percentile drop rates get lower the higher level you are. Anecdotally, for me, it seemed quite the opposite. Pausing your XP was / is def the ‘correct’ way to farm these events for the mog. I didn’t cause eh, I needed to level toons anyways. Ended up with ~500,000 Residual Memory Currency after getting several toons to 70.
I got the shield tmog (both faction) and the Recruit’s Sturdy Cloak - which were the ones I wanted, so I’ll take that as a win. But I am missing one of the other backs (I think Recruit’s Sturdy Wrap or something like that…). But with Early Access, and being tired of those echo events, I’m not looking back <.< heheh.
The shield was unique. People keep claiming the off-hand book was unique, but I didn’t have the now unobtainable appearance of it, had two other books that looked the same and when the tome dropped for me, I did not learn a new appearance.
So for me… the only unobtainable appearance I got was the shield.
The armor and the weapons are otherwise all available.
Yes it was available, but only dropped for characters below 70 and if they could equip shields. I got several. If you got one faction’s shield, it gave you the opposing faction’s shield.
