This is an urban legend, and no, it wasn’t. It’s casual in MC and to an extent in BWL, not AQ40 and naxx. Relative to mythic raids, sure. Relative to hyper casual gamers? No, none of those people were finishing naxx.

It’s easier in 2019 because people know how to stack warrior dps and use fury tanks. That wasn’t figured out until private servers after TBC release. It wasn’t figured out because it wasn’t intuitive that you should use a fury warrior dual wielding to tank, so the raid was threat capped and you brought rogues as a result because they could aggro drop. If literally no-one of the 10M people or whatever playing figured it out…it wasn’t easy or straightforward. Very few guilds finished naxx, because it was hard. If you don’t believe me just go look at Kungen’s Nihilum KT video, there’s like 1 fury warrior on the damage meters.

There were many credible sources of info. Allakhazam most notably, which was basically a slightly older version of wowhead. There were also numerous videos for different content on warcraft videos.

Many of the raids were tuned much harder than they are in classic WoW. There’s a lot of people who played the 2019 version who don’t know this. BWL for instance was massively harder at release, and was tuned down before anyone finished and only a few guilds even got to chromaggus pre-nerf.

It sounds like you’re another person who’s relaying “what they heard” about it or played 1.12 classic in 2019, and didn’t actually play it. Even in 2019, many many guilds blew up in aq40 and naxx and couldn’t finish, with good players being absorbed into established guilds. I was a main tank and raid leader at the time and saw it happen to numerous guilds.

When I first started WoW, I didn’t like it. Got it for, iirc, my birthday, back when Vanilla was a thing. I didn’t really like it, and didn’t play it all that much, but still asked for expansions. Come WOTLK, it was super enjoyable all of a sudden, and my brother had gotten into the game too, but I never really talked to him about it and we played on diff servers / factions.

I couldn’t put the game down. It was basically all I played. I tried games like League (which I now have many thousands of hours in), and just didn’t feel like playing them 'cause I had WoW. I enjoyed it more and more, and then Monk came out with fistweaving, and it was the best thing I’ve played in an MMO. I would literally sit there and delete max level / heroic raid (at the time there was no mythic, heroic was highest) geared characters to relevel them and progress my gear again.

Then I saw the changes coming on the WoD prepatch, and I started losing interest in the game. I looked into other MMOs like Maplestory 2, Wildstar, FFXIV, and etc., and while I enjoyed them for a while, they just didn’t have the same gameplay as WoW. After the WoD prepatch hit, I did one single run of the new Blackrock Spire on my Monk, one run of RFK on my BM Hunter, and immediately unsubbed. Both classes were just ruined, and every other class was in the same boat.

I’d come back every expansion for like, a week or two, maybe do the story if I was lucky, but I’d always just ultimately get bored.

With TWW, I thought I’d enjoy the game again because some of the hero talents looked interesting (like Lightsmith), and I sorta kinda didn’t hate Dragonflight, but having gotten my hpal and prevoker to 80 and gearing them for mythics, I just don’t really care anymore. The new story isn’t really interesting (though it’s better than DF), and the gameplay just sucks now, even if I try to pretend it doesn’t.

I keep telling myself mythics will be fun since I don’t hate the dungeons as much as I did the DF ones, but it won’t be, it’s still the same gameplay, just higher numbers.

I’d just go play the new GW2 expansion, or the new FFXIV expansion, but both games are worse than even current WoW (for various reasons), so they’re not really options. I play League way too much, but I absolutely hate the game and everyone that runs it, so it’s probably not healthy for me. So I’ll get AOTC, pug M+ for a week, then get bored again and go back to League. Same as usual for the last several years.

Nothing will change for my pointless whining, and the game is only going to get worse, even with Bobby gone. I just wish things were different, that I still had WoW to turn to when other games didn’t work for me.

But I don’t. Not anymore.

We were doing this in my guild Paradosi in Vanilla on the Kargath server. Our raid leader George was fury tanking back then. This is old news.

I’m on autopilot most days.

I was just thinking how so much has changed over the years not just with gaming, but life in general.

And instead of writing an essay, I’m just going to say that being a kid must be unbelievably exciting in this world.

I had 3 games. And I had to beg to use the TV and only on Saturdays.

I see all these choices now. Things my kids play. And I’m just to the point that I’d go read a book or take a nap.

I really enjoy getting older, but it’s true. I don’t get lit up and catch fire anymore these days. Maybe that’s the greatness of youth. That you can still be inspired. Now i’d just like some time to myself, and people to leave me alone.

I have done the same, but then I will unsub and start watching movies or tv and realize its way worse than WoW. Nothing really good on anymore so when I have the time, I just play WoW. It is my tv. When the weather cools down, I will be outside again. I cannot wait for my long walks.
