Yeah, that Ny’atloha set was truly incredible, you see everyone wearing it because how cool it is, or how about the Eternal Palace’s with that tinting that makes it look like it came directly from Cataclysm?
The only good sets to come out of BFA were the Tier 3 Stromgarde Plate Alliance and Tier 3 Dark Shore Horde overall except cloth. The rest were completely mediocre.
When I go and look at the raid sets from this expansion and I could not possibly disagree more.
Yeah you can argue with me about the actual look of the sets in terms of color and layout, but you cannot deny that in terms of quality it’s not better than the raid sets that we got for this expansion. The entire thing is three-dimensional and uses high quality textures. The wings even move when you move.
Compare that to the generic and stilted same looking raid sets that we got throughout BFA and you’ll see what I mean.
No one really cares if it looks good or not. The point is that we pay for the base game, expansions, and a recurring monthly subscription fee and that still isn’t enough to be able to access everything in-game.
And even if it were available through in-game means, the existence of a pay-to-shortcut method would completely cheapen the item.
I mean, you can grind gold and buy blizz balance and buy off the shop that way without spending a penny out of your wallet, Can’t say they didn’t give you a grindable in-game item.
If the items in the store existed in the game but were only available through exorbitant prices like the hundreds of thousands of gold that it takes to get them right now then nobody would care. They would just see them as expensive mounts just like the yak or the brutosaur.
The problem is that even if you took all of the mounts off of the store and put them in the game only purchasable through gold it still wouldn’t matter because people can just buy gold now from the store. It cheapens the entire experience.
It’s why I haven’t bothered to even try to get the void fang or the glacial tide storm. Everyone and their mother is just buying gold off the auction house and then buying carries to get the mounts. They aren’t impressive anymore. Anytime I see someone on one of them now I just automatically assume they bought it.
I’m not a fan of the stingrays, but they are high-rez, just like the Dreamer.
You failed to mention the Mechagon mounts from the same patch, which also came in an array of 3 colors. You have the wheel, the spider, and the aerial oppressor models. All high-rez with unique audio and animation. They were every bit as high in quality as the Dreamer mount.
During BfA, we’ve seen a LOT of high-rez mounts ingame.
3 colors of the alpaca. (Mollie, Elusive Quickhoof, & Springfur)
The Reginald mount. (Shadowbarb)
The Bee mount (Honeyback Harvester)
The Hivemind
Several Island Mounts (Surf Jelly and Elderhorn as examples)
Sandy Nightsaber, Priestess Moonsaber, & Krolusk mounts from Darkshore
The Marsh Hoppers for 300k gold apiece (because somehow spending 300k gold on economy manipulation “gold sink” mounts is more virtuous and less dangerous to the game’s integrity)
The spider, the triceratops, and the Longboi - again, gold sink
The GMOD raiding mount
The CE and AotC mounts are all stellar.
You can buy tokens and exchange it for blizz balance. I think right now on my realm it’s 113k gold for $20 bucks, which is how much the transmog is. It’s not that far a reach.
And I don’t disagree but we would have even more mounts to add to that list if the store did not exist. There is no reason whatsoever for this game to have a cash store. Millions of players buy the expansions and pay a monthly fee in order to play the game.
The only reason the cash shop exists is for pure greed. And locking quality content behind that greed in a pay to play game is just plain wrong.
Well, obviously heritage are bound to be good, they are tailored to be specifically designed to fit my race design-wise, or have you forgotten that the selling point of BFA were allied races with their own heritage armor? No, I am talking about the ones you unlock account-wide, through some actual content rather than leveling.
Are you kidding? Look at the mythic… oh, I just noticed you’re a hunter, so you’re doubly cursed. Hunter sets almost always look like butt, and mail almost always looks like butt. So, maybe you’re right when you look though your set tab. But when I look though the set tab on my non-hunter, non-mail alts there’s absolutely better looking raid sets than this sprite darter biz.
This is about the only good point made here, and looking at the Castle Nathria sets in Shadowlands it’s not looking much better. I don’t mind transmog sets in the shop, I don’t even mind GOOD transmog sets in the shop. But when you compare the craftsmanship of this ugly little set in comparison to how they are handling sets in tiers and even the covenant sets, there isn’t much to compare. While I’d still love for individual class sets to make a comeback, it’s hard to argue when you compare legion sets to BFA and now Shadowlands sets.
I am not saying that this purchasable transmog looks better than all of the Mythic raid sets from his expansion. I am saying that it is a higher quality than any of the raid sets from this expansion.

Quality does not equal looking cool

Some of the coolest looking sets in this entire game are the older sets that have crappy textures and look outdated by about 10 years. But this new transmog set is fully three-dimensional, uses high quality textures, and has a set of movable wings. They clearly spent time and effort on making this look really really clean.
Meanwhile this is the same company that said they couldn’t be bothered to do tier sets for this expansion because…reasons?
That’s pretty nebulous there, man. Your definition of “quality” is pretty subjective. You’re basically saying “Since I like this it shouldn’t be in the shop. If I didn’t like it, it’d be fine in the shop.”
Except that’s not what I’m saying at all and you are just misunderstanding what I am trying to say either intentionally or unintentionally.
You can look cool in this game by using old sets that have really poor quality textures on them that look more like blurs than anything else. So those would be cool looking sets but that does not make them high quality sets. They do not use high quality textures.
This is absolutely true. But…deal with it. If the cash store didn’t exist for Blizz to get a flush of a cash (when they’re not set to meet their quarterly projections for the shareholders) Blizz will find another way to make sure their overlords get the dividends they were promised. If there wasn’t a cash shop for them to throw up vanity items with bulk buying…the cash would come from the operational teams working on the game. Well Bonuses are gone this year. Maybe the music department gets a 3rd of their budget removed, the art department…well they already have all of the art done for this patch so we can cut their budget in half for the next two years, the Marketing department has their marketing projects planned for the next two years so we can cut out a 4th of their budget…the Corporation Hydra will always get what they’re promised in returns, Blizzard is tasked with ensuring that happens. Cash shop is an easy way to keep people on the teams and when That doesn’t bring in the needed dividends…we see more people get fired.
In this modern world the Corporate level must always make more money this quart than they did last quarter. And nothing WE do will change that. The only thing our protests do is get people fired while the Corporate twits move on to the next golden goose.
