Not my thing so I’m not excited for them. But there are people who asked for them and are hyped for them!

Only a handful of folks were asking for another Elf race, which Blizzard gave us in BC. As a Blood Elf player, I would think you would understand the difference between a group wanting something and another group disagreeing with you. Even today a lot of Horde players bash on Blood Elves.
Just because you, as an individual, don’t know a lot of people who like them or want to play them, doesn’t mean “nobody wants to play them, or asked for them”. You’re falling into a bias thinking trap!

They kinda look like booty. Except with the Heritage Armor.
But I have one of everything, I don’t really need to have a robo-something. I was ready to roll one as a tinker if they added a new class. I have the perfect name reserved too, kind of a shame.

They look ridiculous, and not in a fun way.
OP is wrong in saying nobody is excited about them, but it’s a very niche audience to be sure.

I think it will be funny to see mechagnomes around. They are pretty goofy lol.
Well… no, actually. A lot of people were asking for another elf race. Lots of people were asking for high elves, though they intended them to be for the Alliance. Horde might act tough about Blood Elves, but the BE actually saved the Horde playerbase.
Nobody is a blanket term. The idea is that it’s not a popular race idea (whereas elves are) and came out of nowhere, rather than an actually highly requested race.
That said, the introduction of mechagnomes makes me glad I rerolled Horde.

I’m actually very excited for mechagnomes. Got some gold faction-transferred, heirlooms upgraded/enchanted, and some good bags made all in preparation for my new robot girl.
Resistance is futile. You will be upgraded.

Most every core race has an allied counterpart. It’s only right gnomes get one too. And “least played” is kind of a baseless label, every race has a fan base. Many do like gnomes and mechagnomes. I think they’re cool. First robot race!
In the end WoW is a story driven game. Mechagnomes make the most sense easily given the context. Some allied race requests are definitely popular, but they can be pretty unrealistic too. Blizz is free to disagree with requests and won’t do everything just because.

Nah Msinformed is actually a pretty cool poster.
But I have seen just as many mechagnome hype threads as I have vulpera hype threads.
So myself, DR-23R0, and his wife MS-23R0 (the lore is deep, he has a wife now) all turn our noses up at you (op, not Fenshire. Fenshire is best orc.)

I do hope they turn out better than the lack of hype would lead one to expect. Gnomes have been overdue for significant development for a long time, and I say that as someone with no interest in them.
That said, some of the implementation details could be better, and with all things Gnome, appeal will be relatively limited. Also, set aside the ridiculous “ermahgerd, furries!!!” line of thought and just accept that cute, fuzzy critters are the defacto gods of the internet - Ancient Egypt 
Cats style. The Vulpera come with almost weaponized levels of appeal. Unless you replaced the Mecha Gnomes with Pygmy Sabereon, there was no way this wasn’t going to be a one sided popularity contest.
That said, The Mechagnomes are, if nothing else, unique. Mechagon turned out far better than I imagined, and I definitely have to give the points for at least having the decency of being established before hand if nothing else. (*kaufVoidElveskauf *)
Still, it was never going to be a contest.
