I find too often that I want 2 talents on one tier and none on other tiers. Back in the day you had a lot more freedom about where to put your points. When they made the change we were told it was because the old way didn’t provide meaningful decisions. That people just looked up or simmed whatever the best talents were and everyone went with that build. Isn’t that what we’re doing now though? I feel like most talents on most tiers just have a blatant no-brainer option on them. Like no Prot Warrior is ever going to take Devastator over the buffed Demoralizing shout. As Arms I am not taking anything on that final tier over Anger Management. Do I really have more meaningful decisions this way?
classic discussion is that way
Skill trees are way better imo as well, They allowed you to totally screw your character up in one direction and min max in another. Gigantic matrix’s create more balance issues than Talent trees but the offer way more depth.
Look at D2 sorc it has 19 possible builds within a single class , this is why people still love this game 20 years later. WoW isnt a true mmoRPG any more its more a MMO.
I’m not interested in classic though.
yeah.
but then WoW devs: “We dont like ppl having cookie cutter builds and want more variety”
flash forward to the current talent system and we have even MORE cookie cutter than way back in the day
The tiny handful of talent choices available makes for pretty dull leveling, too. People harp on about how it wasn’t very interesting to get talent points every 2 levels only to spend a third of them in “+1% crit” types of talents, but least those built up to something and gave a sense of progression! Today you can go multiple levels without getting anything at all which feels horrible.
Calm down Pepperidge Farm.
Classic is getting closer and closer my friend!
Think they add depth , a little bit of complexity which then adds replayability and longevity which blizzard were renowned for once upon a time.
I understood when they made the change why they did it, within a huge matrix there is always a one major winner but that’s no different to what we have now.
I think the positive out weigh the negatives with skill tress , so balance takes longer its not like blizzard have ever been good at balance anyway and RPG’s by their nature can never be balanced.
I honestly dont think we have a completely cookie cutter built. Though some talent are really bad. But there’s a point where you can mix and match them depending on the situation and not just listen to what icy-vein/wowhead tells you to pick. Especially for something like m+ there are ways you can customise talent depending on the weeks affix
So you’re saying the upside to modern talent trees is that I’m less likely to mess up if I have fewer choices? Doesn’t sound like a very good reason.
Ah the illusion of choice. Remember when people would inspect you for dungeons and if your talents weren’t one of maybe 2 possible builds…DENIED.
Talent trees existed well beyond classic.
Current talent trees boils your decisions down to a handful of meaningful decisions.
Previous talent trees you had to constantly purchase nominal upgrades you you wouldn’t even notice if you had gotten it passively. “Oh boy. 1% more crit”…just to get to the same types of choices to effect your game play.
You think choice isn’t an illusion nowadays? Most tiers have auto pick talents. It’s the same thing now but we have less options for those few tiers where we do actually have a choice. Nowadays you’ll get 1 maybe 2 tiers where what you pick is personal choice. You had way more back in the day.
@Akston
I don’t like the 1/2/3% Crit talents either to be fair. I just prefered the larger tree as it gave more customization options. Yes some were auto picks, that’s the same today. Yes some were so small you’d hardly notice, still true today. I just want more customization options. It feels like there is no room for innovation in builds nowadays.
The large talent trees were so awful. 0.5% extra attack speed and other negligible garbage.
At least there’s decent choice between AoE and ST and PvP talents in the design they have today.
That being said, there should have been extra talents at 120.
How many times is this dead horse going to be raised from the dead just so ppl can kick it again?
+1 Rage per hit. Five times. And I have to take it to get to the talent I actually want.
Such freedom. Such exhilarating, meaningful game play.
If anything the current talent tree just need more tiers to them.
Assuming you get 1 talent point per level that’s 5 levels. In current WoW you gain 5 levels and what do you get? Nothing. You’re not accounting for the other ten levels that may have gave you meaningful decisions.
Nowadays I have maybe two talents where my decision actually matters? So the other 118 levels have no interesting or meaningful decisions to them.
You had more choices but if you didn’t have “this exact” talent build you were sat or declined from most dungeons/raids. So if you wanted to do higher content did you really have much of a choice of talents? There were cookie cutter builds that required more talent clicks.
