I love the idea of Shadow Priests

Since the feedback for 10.2 has been removed, I’ll repost my feedback here.


11.0 Class Talent Tree

Power Infusion debacle

Change Power Infusion and Twins of the Sun Priestess to ONLY be accessible to Discipline Priests as was long ago.
Instead, give Holy and Shadow respective utility that makes them stand out in their own right.

Example below:

Replacement for Power Infusion

  • Holy specialization

    • Ascension
      You ascend into the air out of harms way, granting 100% increased movement speed for 15 seconds. 3 minute cooldown.
    • PvP modifier
      You become immune to movement effects and duration is increased by 5 seconds.
  • Discipline specialization

    • Power Infusion
      Infuses the target with power for 20 sec, increasing haste by 25% and all absorption effects by 100%. 3 minute cooldown.
    • PvP modifier
      Atonement healing is increased by 100% to targets infused with Power Infusion.
  • Shadow specialization

    • Spectral Guise
      Your shadow blurs into the darkness, leaving your true form behind. As a shadow you are stealthed, but remain in combat. Lasts 6 sec or until your true form is hit by 3 direct attacks. 3 minute cooldown.
    • PvP modifier
      Using fade reduces the cooldown by 10 seconds and 1 second for each Shadowy Apparition spawned.

Replacement for Twins of the Sun Priestess

  • Holy specialization

    • Angelic Embrace
      Ascension is extended to your group (5) and the cooldown is reduced by 60 seconds.
Summary

Useful to bypass areas by flying over obstacles or traversing vertically to deal with something or using a short cut. Also useful during a fight with ground mechanics as it can be used to avoid completely.

  • Discipline specialization

    • Twins of the Sun Priestess
      Power Infusion also grants you 100% of its effects when used on an ally and the cooldown is reduced by 60 seconds.
  • Shadow specialization

    • Enveloping Shadows
      While remained stealthed, you become immune to damage and Spectral Guise cooldown is reduced by 60 seconds.
Summary

Useful to soak / avoid damage similar to Demon Hunters Netherwalk ability.

Note:
Each talent reduces the cooldown of its respective ability to justify picking up the enhancement talent even if you don’t take advantage of the enhanced version of the spell and/or you are doing solo content where it does not benefit anyone else. This allows the point investment to not feel like its wasted at times.

Mobility Displacement

  • Mind Shift
    You Shift Minds with a party member, causing you to swap locations. 3 min cooldown.
Summary

It remains both thematic alongside Mind Control, Mind Vision and Mind Soothe in giving a Mind spell utility while also giving more trolling opportunities alongside Leap of Faith.

  • Example:
    • Dungeon: Swap locations with group member to escape danger, then Leap of Faith the person you swapped locations with if they cant escape.
    • Raid: Swap with melee to help them get into range or position yourself away from group and swap with someone that needs to run out and explode / deal with mechanic netting them the right location and you safely away from them exploding etc.
  • PvP modifier
    You can now Mind Shift with an enemy, causing you to swap locations.
    • Example:
      • Arena: Use on enemy to pull out of pillar protection and instantly fear/CC enemies allies while your team pounce on the enemy player you swapped locations with.
      • Battleground AB: Use alongside Mind Control to toss people off the cliff (if it was instant cast).

Even though I think Apathy could be useful if it was what it used to be in Cataclysm when it was called Paralysis…

  • Paralysis
    When you critically hit with your Mind Blast, you cause the target to be unable to move for 4 sec.

I think Mind Shift would fit best here as a replacement or a choice talent, if a choice talent, then revert Apathy to Paralysis and have it root the target, not just slow.


11.0 Shadow Priest Talent Tree

Goals

  • Make meaningful changes to create 2 main sub spec damage profiles revolving around Periodic Damage and Non-Periodic Damage.
    • Cooldowns: Voidform = Haste/Dot/Rot and increased uptime on Devouring Plague (callback to Auspicious Spirits build from Warlords of Dreanor)
    • Cooldowns: Dark Ascension = Crit/Instant upfront damage (callback to Clarity of Power build from Warlords of Dreanor)
    • Primary filler: Mind Flay = Periodic Damage build.
    • Primary filler: Mind Spike = Non-Periodic Damage build.
  • Cooldown and stand alone talents that lean into the 2 main sub spec damage profiles respectively
  • Psychic Link
    • Periodic Damage builds will have Damage over Time dot spread be the majority of AOE damage. Psychic Link will act as only a small supplement to the overall damage with low hitting Direct Damage spell values.
    • Non-Periodic Damage builds will have Direct Damage be the majority of AOE damage. Damage over time spells will do low damage and only really acting as a way to augment Psychic Link and other Non-Periodic Damage spell synergies.
  • Shore up boring / unused talents

Cooldown Talents

  • Voidform (Redesign)
    Increases your periodic Shadow damage by 15%, increasing by 2% every second. Lasting 15 seconds. Devouring Plague costs 50% less insanity, reducing by 2% every second and extends Voidform duration by 2 seconds. 1 min cooldown.
    OR
  • Voidform (Redesign)
    Increases your periodic Shadow damage by 15%, increasing by 2% every second. Lasting 15 seconds. Your insanity generation is increased by 100%, reducing by 2% every second. Devouring Plague extends Voidform duration by 2 seconds. 1 min cooldown.
Summary

Goal is to make the Voidform extension criteria increasingly more difficult the longer you remain in Voidform by adjusting the insanity values to offset the increased damage the longer you remain in Voidform.

  • Regarding scaling concerns. Multiple ways to achieve this in a single or multiple paths of adjustment.
    • Cap scaling with a hard number like 60 sec for example where it stops scaling.
    • Adjust the amount of baseline duration value.
    • Adjust the amount of duration extension value.
    • Adjust the amount of baseline increased insanity generation / insanity cost reduction.
    • Adjust the amount of reduced insanity generation / cost reduction every second.
    • Adjust the amount of insanity generation.
    • Adjust the baseline stat values.
    • Adjust the scaling stat values.
    • Adjust the cooldown value.

(Choice)

  • Dark Ascension (Updated)
    Increases your non-periodic Shadow damage by 25% for 20 sec. The cooldown of Shadow Word: Death is reduced by 50% and deals damage as if the target is below 20% health. 1 min cooldown.

Cooldown Enhancing Talents

  • Ancient Madness (Updated)
    Voidform and Dark Ascension increase the critical strike chance of your spells by 20%, reducing by 0.5% every sec for the duration.
    (Choice)
  • Ancient Hysteria (New)
    Voidform and Dark Ascension increase your Haste by 10%, increasing by 0.5% every sec for the duration.
Summary

Note:
With the intended loss of Power Infusion for Shadow, adjusting Ancient Madness and adding Ancient Hysteria will both grant the haste choice if we want and increase the critical strike buff amount.

The Periodic damage builds would gravitate towards the Ancient Hysteria Haste buff while the Non-Periodic damage builds will gravitate towards the Ancient Madness critical strike buff since Haste is less of a concern with many built in options to circumvent the need for reduced casting time via increased haste or the reliance for Damage over Time spell contribution percentage showing up since VT and SW:P are used only to activate procs and damage through Psychic Link.

Periodic Damage leaning talents

  • Void Ray (New / Choice with Void Torrent)
    Mind Flay deals 10% increased damage for each of your damage over time spells on the target.
Summary

This includes Echoing Void from N’Zoth and Mindgames alongside Shadow Word: Pain, Vampiric Touch and Devouring Plague for a total of up to 5 separate damage over time spells effects amplifying Mind Flays damage.

(Choice)

  • Void Torrent (Updated)
    Channel a torrent of void energy into the target, dealing Shadow damage over 3 sec and causing your periodic damage effects on the target to deal damage 100% faster.
    Generates 24 Insanity over the duration.
  • Malediction (Redesign)
    Your channeled spells deal damage 33% faster.
Summary

This would affect all channeled spells, including the Void Tendrils spawned by Idol of C’Thun.

  • Echoing Shadows (New 2 point talent)
    40/80% of all your periodic damage dealt in the last 3 sec is dealt again, occurring after casting Devouring Plague.
Summary

This essentially replaces the purpose/function of Surge of Insanity. This is a 2 point talent in third tier to force the choice meaning it’s not mandatory as Surge of Insanity seems to be as a 1 point talent in the first tier. This is upgraded to affect all periodic damage instead of just Mind Flay. This allows the reintroduction of Surge of Darkness in a nerfed state to make it not as powerful and as such not seen as mandatory to take.

Non-Periodic Damage leaning talents

  • Mind Spike (Updated)
    Blasts the target for Shadowfrost damage.
    Mind Spike also increases the critical strike chance of your Mind spells [buff] by 5% for 6 sec. Stacks up to 3 times.
Summary
  • Mind Spike works as both a replacement for Mind Flay OR as an additional spell in the tool kit.
  • With the way I crafted the talent tree structure to sway from Periodic Damage vs Non-Periodic damage builds, then Mind Spikes purpose is no longer confused. Its place is solidly leaning towards Non-Periodic damage builds.
  • I think Mind Spike stands out as an extra piece of shadows toolkit in its primary purpose is to do quick damage on targets that die quickly before dots have a chance to deal full effect, example being for quick target swaps in PvE and PvP just like how it was introduced in Cataclysm. So it should be optional and not replace or override Mind Flay.
  • With Non-Periodic damage builds, Mind Spike will very well become the primary filler spell. But having access to Mind Flay for its slowing utility alone is another reason for them to coexist simultaneously. It’s also nice to use Mind Spike utility in having access to it if shadow spell school gets locked out and simply used as a slight buff to Mind Spells which leans more into Mind Spike filler based on the way the buff is acquired but still can be useful for Mind Flay and other Mind Spells to justify a talent point. This means it can be a meaningful spell to use alongside Periodic Damage builds that uses Mind Flay as its primary filler.
  • The added critical strike buff is designed to be helpful but not abused in buffing your Mind Spells for only a short duration to avoid back to back Mind Sear critical striking constantly or Mind Flay critical striking often as it would net a DPS lost to spend more time getting the buff stacks when it wont last that long to benefit your Mind Sear AOE or Periodic damage build filler Mind Flay.
  • Irrationality (Replace Mind Melt)
    Mind Spike pierces the target and embeds a spike [debuff], causing it to receive your maximum mastery effect from all spells and deals 100% increased damage if the target is not afflicted with Shadow Word: Pain or Vampiric Touch.
    Lasts 10 sec.
    (Choice)
  • Surge of Darkness (Nerfed version)
    Your Vampiric Touch and Devouring Plague damage has a 10% (was 12%) chance to cause your next Mind Spike be instant, and deal 20% (was 50%) additional damage. Can accumulate up to 2 (was 3) charges.
    Lasts 10 sec.
  • Echos of Death (New 2 point talent)
    While under the effects of Voidform or Dark Ascension, your Shadow Word: Death triggers (1)/(2) additional time at 20% effectiveness.

AOE Damage talents

  • Mind Sear (Choice with Psychic Link)
    Corrosive shadow energy radiates from the target, dealing Shadow damage every sec over 5 sec to all enemies within 10 yards of the target. Damage reduced beyond 5 targets.
Summary

Reverted back to a NON Insanity consuming spell.

  • Its enhanced damage will only be accessible through OTHER Periodic damage enhancing talents.
  • Mind Sear would be the ideal/goto AOE talent for Periodic Damage builds. Leaving Psychic Link more room to funnel a higher percentage of Non-Periodic damage through to targets via Vampiric Touch Application thus would be the ideal/goto AOE talent for Non-Periodic damage builds.
  • Void Eruption (Takes Shadowy Insight location, move Shadowy Insight to replace Surge of Insanity)
    Releases an explosive blast of pure void energy causing Shadow damage to all enemies within 10 yds of your target.
    Increases the duration of Voidform or Dark Ascension by 3 sec.
    Requires 50 insanity
Summary

Now Void Eruption is split separately from Voidform. Allows more use instead of once every 2 minutes. Also acts as an additional insanity dump to use for massive AOE while also extending either of Shadows DPS cooldown.

  • Cascade (Choice with Shadow Crash)
    Launch a Shadowy bolt that grows in power with distance, damaging an enemy, and then bouncing to additional enemies 4 times. Each time it bounces, it splits into 2 bolts.

Misc. Damage talents

  • Mental Decay (Redesign to be more useful for AOE)
    The duration of your Shadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch is increased by 1 sec when enemies suffer damage from Shadowy Apparitions.
    (Choice)
  • Reap (Reduce dot spreader cooldown. Useful for fast paced fights where targets die fast)
    The cooldown of Cascade is reduced by 1 second for each of your damage over time spells the target is afflicted with upon death.
  • Shadow Asgard (Choice with Thought Harvester)
    Mind Blast consumes up to 12 seconds of your damage over time spells, dealing 100% of the damaged consumed.
    Damage consumed grants Shadow Asgard [buff] for 12 sec causing Mind Blast to deal 200% additional damage
Summary
  • Purpose of this talent is to front load more damage to Mind Blast at the cost of not having an additional charge from not picking Thought Harvester and adding up 12 seconds worth all damage over time spell damage and adding it to the Mind Blast damage while subtracting 12 seconds from each damage over time spell.
  • This would be ideal for a Psychic Link AOE build in conjunction with Irrationality Talent making Mind Spike deal more damage to targets without dots on them while still transferring a portion of that damage to other targets with dots on them via Psychic Link.
  • This would grant the chunky Direct Damage into Mind Blast and Mind Spike at the cost of less damage over time. So it fits with a burst build and does not negatively impact a periodic damage build as this can be avoided as needed.
  • As soon as the dots fall off or consumed from target, you have a up to 12 seconds hard hitting Mind Blast + Hard Hitting Mind Spike with Irrationality granting 100% increase damage to a target with no dots + full mastery Mind Spike debuff on target + Shadow Word: Death + Dark Ascension DPS cooldown. Everything synergies together for quick burst moments at the cost of damage over time without sacrificing dot management for optimum efficiency.
  • Unfurling Darkness (Redesign to be more useful)
    After casting Vampiric Touch on a target, your next Vampiric Touch is cast instantly.
  • Tormenting Shadows (New / Choice with Inescapable Torment)
    Casting Devouring Plague extends the duration of Mindbender by 3 seconds. Mindbender attacks an additional time when Devouring Plagues deals periodic damage.
Summary

Added as an alternative choice which focuses more on single target and less forced gameplay change.

Capstone Talents

  • Idol of Y’Shaarj (Redesign to be more interactive and game changing)
    The fractured Mind of Y’Shaarj coalesces into the essences of 7 Prime Sha forms, empowering your powers of the Mind.
    Summoning Mindbender unlocks the powers of all the prime Sha and empowering your Mind Spells, granting each an additional effect while Mindbender is active.
    • Echo of Anger: Mind Flay is castable while moving.
    • Echo of Hatred: Mind Blast gains an additional charge.
    • Echo of Violence: Mind Spike cast time is reduced by 50%.
    • Echo of Despair: Mind Sear spawns a Shadowy Apparition each time a target is damaged from Mind Sear, Max targets (5).
    • Echo of Fear: Mindbender attacks 20% faster and applies a stack of Shadow Vulnerability stacking up to 10 times, lasts 15 seconds.
      • Shadow Vulnerability causes the target to take an additional 1% damage from your shadow spells. Upon reaching 10 stacks, your [non-boss] target becomes Horrified for 3 sec.
    • Echo of Doubt: Mindgames duration is refreshed each time the target takes damage from your Mind spells.
    • Echo of Pride: Mind Shift cools down 100% faster.
      OR
    • Echo of Pride: Mind Control [Dominate Mind] becomes instant cast.

Note:
Similar to MoP legendary cloaks having those animal aspect animations show up periodically, it would be interesting to see a incorporeal / seen through Prime Sha form appear time to time when using your Mind Spells during the Y’Shaarj Mindbender moments. It would be similar to the Living Shadow animation on top of you from 9.2 tier set bonus, only much bigger and see through like it was faded.

  • Idol of N’Zoth (Incorporated Dark Evangelism talent effect)
    • Your periodic Shadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch damage is increased by 10% and has a 30% chance to apply Echoing Void, max 5 targets.
      Each time Echoing Void is applied, it has a chance to collapse, consuming a stack every 1 sec to deal (11% of Spell power) Shadow damage to all nearby enemies. Damage reduced beyond 5 targets.
      If an enemy dies with Echoing Void, all stacks collapse immediately.
      OR
  • Idol of N’Zoth (Incorporated Dark Evangelism talent effect)
    • Your periodic Shadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch damage has a 30% chance to apply Echoing Void, max 4 targets.
      Echoing Void increases your periodic damage by 3% per stack, stacking up to 10. Upon reaching 10 stacks, it will collapse, dealing 30% of all Shadow damage dealt while the target was afflicted with echoing void to all nearby enemies. Damage reduced beyond 5 targets.
      If an enemy dies with Echoing Void, all stacks collapse immediately.

Note:
Would be interesting to see shadowy tentacles appear and envelop targets that have Echoing Void on them (See Azshara in game cinematic showing N’Zoth enveloping her in Black/Shadowy tentacles for reference). Then the tentacles get bigger and wrap around the target more and more as the stacks increase before consuming them completely and disappearing when the collapses occurs.

  • Idol of Yogg-Saron (Redesign to be more accessible and lean more into Shadowy Apparition talent synergies)
    • Your Shadow Word: Death spawn Greater Shadow Apparitions for every target afflicted with Shadow Word: Pain and explode on contact dealing 200% increased damage spread evenly up to 5 targets.
      OR
    • Your Shadow Word: Death spawns a Shadowy Apparition for each target afflicted with Shadow Word: Pain. Shadowy Apparitions deal 20% of its damage to nearby targets. Max (5).

Note:
Would be interesting to see the Shadows spawned by Shadow Word: Death be in the form of the faceless ones during Phase 1 of Yogg-Saron fight.


Hero Path Talents

A decent portion of these suggestions would make a lot of sense to move over to the Hero Path system pending how that shapes up.

Below, I will show an example of a direction the Hero Path talents can go into.

    Your Non-Periodic damage critical strikes extend the duration of Dark Ascension by 1 second.
  • Maniac
    Mind Spike cast time is reduced by 50% after you critically strike with Mind Blast for the next 3 seconds.

    Your Shadow Word: Pain periodic damage grants you Dark Archon [buff], increasing the damage of your next Shadow Word: Death by 10%. Stacking up to 5.
  • Blood Archon
    Your Vampiric Touch periodic damage grants you Blood Archon [buff] increasing the damage of your next Devouring Plague spell by 5% and heals your group for 20% of the damage dealt. Stacking up to 5.
  • Death Throes
    Your Mind Spells deal 10% more damage for 6 seconds when you critically strike with Shadow Word: Death. Stacking up to 3.
  • Tormented Wraith
    You have a 50% chance to spawn a Wraith when your Shadow Word: Death deals damage to a target below 20% health and 100% chance when you land a killing blow. Lasting for 6 seconds.
    • Tormented Wraiths charge at your enemies cleaving with Wraith Strike [cone attack] inflicting them with Reapers Mark. Reapers Mark increases the chance for your non-periodic damage to critically strike by 5% and your critical strike damage bonus by 10% for 10 seconds, stacking up to 3.

Archon (Holy/Shadow)

  • Intertwining Fates
    Your Twist of fate increases your damage and healing done by an additional 10%.
  • Suppressive Words
    When your Holy Word spells heals a friendly target, the damage the target takes is reduced by 10% for 5 seconds.
    When your Shadow Word spells damage an enemy target, the damage the target inflicts is reduced by 10% for 5 seconds.

  • Praying for Death
    When Prayer of Mending is bounced from Shadow Word: Death backlash damage, your damage and healing is increased by 10% for 8 seconds.
  • Psionic Storm (Archon Keystone)

    Create a Psionic Storm at the targeted location for 10 seconds. While in a storm, enemies take damage every 0.5 seconds, increasing by 20% for each consecutive instance of damage, up to 400%.

    Your single target spells damage and healing is replicated to every target within Psionic Storm.
  • Psionic Surge (Archon Capstone)
    Targets within your Psionic Storm take 10% increased damage and healing from your spells every second, up to 100%

    • Holy: Healing done from your Holy Word spells generate a stack of Psionic Energy. Reaching 20 stacks fill you with power and causing you to erupt, dealing pulse healing to your allies within 20 yards every second for 3 seconds.
    • Shadow: Damage dealt by your Shadow Word spells generate a stack of Psionic Energy. Reaching 20 stacks causes the next target to receive damage from your Mind Spells to erupt, dealing pulsing damage to every enemy within 20 yards every second for 3 seconds.
  • Psionic Power
    When Psionic Energy erupts, your Psychic Link damage and healing increases by 5% for 30 seconds. Stacking up to 3.
  • Psionic Force
    Psionic Energy pulse deals 100% more damage and healing with each consecutive pulse.

    Your single target Holy Word spells heal 25% of the healing done to targets affected by your Renew within 40 yards.
  • Psionic Focus
    Gaining a stack of Psionic Power increases the healing of your single target healing spells and reduces the mana cost by 10% per stack.

    When an enemy strikes you or your group while your Renew is active, they become afflicted with Shadow Word: Pain, with the remaining duration left of the Renew.

    Voidform increase your Shadow damage by 1% every second and no longer has a cooldown or duration limit but causes your Insanity to drain increasingly faster until it reaches 0 and Voidform ends.

    You have a 20% chance to duplicate Shadowy Apparitions spawned by your spells.
  • Void Corruption
    Vampiric Touch radiates 10% of its damage to nearby enemy targets, Max (5).
  • Void Fiend
    Your Shadow Fiend replicates its damage to every target afflicted with your Shadow Word: Pain and increases the periodic damage they receive by 10%.
  • Void Bolt
    Sends a bolt of pure void energy at every enemy afflicted with Vampiric Touch and dealing 10% of the total Vampiric Touch damage with each bolt.

  • Void Ray
    Your Mind Flay deals 5% more damage for each periodic damage effect on the target.
  • Void Eruption
    Releases an explosive blast of pure void energy causing Shadow damage to all enemies within 10 yards of your target.

  • Black Hole (Perhaps a candidate to replace/compete with Shadow Crash)
    Create a Black Hole in a targeted area. Enemy targets are quickly pulled towards its center, dealing increasing damage the closer they get. Touching the center stuns the target for 1 seconds. Lasts for 10 seconds.

Voidweaver (Discipline/Shadow)

  • Mind spells and shielding/absorbing spells crossover

Talents

  • Dark Covenant
    • Discipline: Smite becomes Mind Flay during Shadow Covenant and chains up to 4 additional targets, dealing 20% more damage per linked target.
    • Shadow: You form a Void Covenant, causing Devouring Plague to pulse 30% of its periodic damage to nearby targets while under the effects of Voidform, Max (5).
  • Mind Meld
    Targets afflicted with your Shadow Word: Pain take 10% more damage from your Mind Spells.

Voidweaver (Discipline)

Talents

  • Power Word: Twilight
    Casting Power Word: Shield while under the effects of Shadow Covenant reduces the damage the target takes by 10%.

    Your Power Word: Shield absorbs 200% more and weakened soul duration is increased by 100%.
    If dispelled, weakened soul duration is reduced by 50%.

    Your Flash Heal becomes Shadowmend, increasing healing by 200% and mana cost by 100%.
  • Flirting with Death

Shadow

  • Dark Taint
    Melee attacks made against you afflict the target with Dark Taint, decreasing the damage they deal to you and increasing the damage you deal to them by 1% and 5% while Dark Ascension or Voidform is active for 5 seconds. Stacking up to 20%.
Summary
  • This is to make it a bit more risky for melee attackers to just Zerg you down. If they still do, you will automatically deal more damage to them and they will deal less damage to you. This will encourage less zerging you till you die and more hit you a bit and then swap to someone else and come back later. Or wait till the stacks fall off in 5 seconds.
