Thank you for sharing your perspective. Good read, OP and welcome back! Savor Azeroth, as you write. No need to rapidly ingest. Leads to discomfort I’ve found.
You’re doing the right thing OP - wish there were more players like you, and less powergamers.
The unfortunate part of it being a multiplayer game is occasionally having to play with people who treat it like a job…
Yea, its so easy to get caught up in the “job” mentality. Then when you get in guilds etc that all think like that, it becomes an echo-chamber of hate and discontent because they fly through content and always want more, more and more. Happy to put my feet up, have a beer and just relax.
Puhleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze! BFA is garbage. This is coming from a guy who loves WoW! Legion was amazing, not without some problems. 8.2 looks promising but for the most part I’m looking at BFA as a filler xpac and making my final judgement on the next xpac!
Yea, I certainly get it I felt that way before. I actually enjoy it quite a bit now, just taking my time. I have even went and played my lock main that is level cap and enjoyed just rep farming etc.
That being said I’m enjoying it with my new mindset towards WoW, but it certainly is not my favorite expansion by any means. I hope the next expansion is better but then again, I will always hope the next expansion is better haha.
My mindset is kind of I will play it until I dont enjoy it anymore, and then maybe I will go play Classic since I started at BC never sunk my teeth into classic. Maybe not, all I know is if the enjoyment leaves or it becomes a chore to play again I’m out its not worth it to me. Though with my new completionist mindset I don’t think that is happening anytime soon.
Arguing opinions, while a great online pass time, is an act in futility.
Let people enjoy things.
I took a similar approach recently. I am having more fun than I was a few months ago. I would say the slow down approach doesn’t work with everything.
Example: I took my time in the RE2 remake. Beat it in like 6 hours. I kept playing and started watching speed runs. I mimicked what I saw in those runs and spent the next 70 hours doing speed runs and improving my gameplay. I found GREAT enjoyment from that.
I think the take away here is find what works for YOU then go all out in the playstyle you enjoy.
Wow can be as casual or as hardcore as you want it to be.
It’s pretty simple… Don’t try to keep up with the Jones’.
Play at your own pace, do the content you enjoy and don’t worry about what your ilvl is. If you enjoy elite end game content then that’s great, but understand that you can only do it for so long before it gets tiring as it’s the same hamster wheel over and over and over.
Really good point. So true, and I’m sure there are so many out there that even in wow have played it hardcore from day 1 without letting up and more power to them. I’m just too weak to keep up. hahah. And I love RE games, but I have never tried to speed run one. hmm might have to give that a shot.
Coming from a wow newbie (started with bfa) I have to say I totally agree, the game can be horrid and taxing or it can be an amazing, huge, adventurous, fun filled place… all depends on how you play it… and your mindset.
I boosted and leveled to catch up with friends who’ve been playing for a while. Did the ilvl grind to beable to do dungeons with them. But I also did every quest in WOD because I wanted my own castle. I’ve read that it was a bad expac, so I was prepared to be annoyed but I had fun!
Then made alts and did bfa less speedily and found that I love being in Drustvar listening to the creepy sounds as I wander the forest as a witch hunter.
Currently helping some dragons in legion, after that MoP. I can see myself playing for a long time… as long as I dont get pulled into the swift waters of the “Race to the End” river.
On a side note, blizzard kinda hurts their own game with the emphasis on end game esports progression. It gives a lot of people that idea of “we must burn through the season to get to the playoffs”
I play this game because I had too much time and money invested into it not too. I would never suggest a friend play WoW in its current state.
Awesome Welcome!
You are spot on, with the Blizz kind of hurts themselves. They certainly do put an emphasis on it and of course, it does sell. I think that is it in a lot of ways, that Blizz very heavily markets that side of the game. So especially when I was younger, it was not necessarily that I wanted to be one but that, I needed to almost play the game at a Pro level. I wanted to keep up with those top raiders and top arena teams. Especially because I had very skilled high-level friends. I also did well for myself, and like I said in another comment if that is your play style and you can maintain it I applaud you.
For me, it has now just clicked in my head over a decade later that this is not my playstyle and it feels good to come to terms with it. I’m not some pro gamer, I have never wanted to be so why was I playing, like I was trying to be? haha.
I’m glad you are enjoying the game and taking the plunge into it this late into its life, I know that can be daunting for some. Welcome again, and do your best to stay out of those waters.
Strange…kinda like sitting in the parking lot cuz the meter you stuffed with coins isn’t zero yet.
Your return on investment was playing the game at content! There’s no long term gain, no bonus after a number of years nor does the time invested make any difference in the return rate (you’re playing the same game as everyone else).
It makes no difference if you quit today or stay until the game dies. You don’t have to be here. But if you are, enjoy the game!
You should let your friend make his/her own decision without your jaded bitterness.
Wow your post really encouraged me cough blizzard bot cough. You made me realize all the things that are wrong with the game are inconsequential cough blizzard bot cough Let’s just sing sugar pops and ride rainbows and all our problems will disappear.
Positivity about WoW isn’t tolerated around here, so good luck, OP.
You can say you enjoy BFA all you want but unless you say why I don’t buy it. Plenty of Blizzard sycophants out there.
That was a good read OP.
My biggest complaint that I absolutely cannot get over is how Blizzard has treated flying. I love flying. Getting to max level then taking to the skies was one of the greatest feelings I had in wow. Blizzard has taken EVERY BIT of fun out of flying.
I always read the quest text, i rarely ever use my flying mount, I enjoy the immersion into the virtual world that’s been built. I play to explore this virtual world and enjoy myself.
I totally understand the competitive aspect, I was there once too, however it ruined my enjoyment of just “playing“ as i was forcing myself to do things i didn’t enjoy because it was required, like a job.
So I stopped taking it so seriously and just played, I do whatever i want, old content for achievements, story, transmogs, new content for gear or mounts or whatever, it’s all good.
Good for you. I used to do the hardcore raiding thing and the achievement chasing thing and recently had similar revelations. Now I found myself a nice casual guild of grownups that raids 2 short raid nights a week and the rest of my play time I just level toons or run quests in zones I have ignored since Cata reset the world or run arenas or whatever I’m feeling that day without the stress of oh I have to be the best geared or have all the achievements. I still like theory crafting a bit and trying to do the max dps possible, but I do it for fun not as a stressor. Great post!
When I look at your name I picture Fry from Futurama having his 100th cup of coffee.
