Even though I’m in early cognitive decline, I am still very curious about what the stuff y’all say in your posts means.
“Solo Shuffle”, “MUD” are just a couple which come to mind to this “Ol’ Geezer”, so I’m asking you kiddos if there’s a “dictionary” y’all might recommend that I can keep in a file for future reference?
Embarrassed to admit that after 17 years playing, I am still largely ignorant as to gaming terminology, so I appreciate your help.
PS: “Ol’ Jonãs” is a level 80 and has been for close to a month, and I’m kinda proud of having helped him get there, so how long does it take to change the numbers in the forums? (Okay elsewhere).
Solo Shuffle is a form of PvP, where you go in solo and get teamed up with others. After every match, the players get shuffled around.
I’m unsure if it means something different in WoW itself, but in general MUD stands for Multi-User Dungeon. Historically it was text based and sort of the precursor to the modern MMO.
Edit:
PlayStation has a list of common gaming terms.
And as my own personal story, I was playing a Hunter in a LFR group, I’d only been playing a few weeks. Someone kept calling “Hunter, Hero”. I’d ever heard that term before and carefully went through my spell book and didn’t see anything called that. At the end they asked why I never cast Hero and I said I didn’t have anything called that. Yeah…they were wanting me to use my pets Bloodlust haha. That was when I learned what Bloodlust was and why it was called Lust vs Hero for Horde vs Alliance
Thanks, Jeysca, and wow (Not WoW)! I can see that it’s not only the terminology, but how it is used and what the other person may assume one already knows.
Thanks also for the link. I am sure it will prove to be valuable (once I can remember where to look for it on my rig!*) .
Have a fun game and thanks again!
*ETA: Bookmarks.
And a great big THANK YOU “Air” SMOOCH from me and "Ol; Jonãs for the level 80! You rawk, whoever you are!
For this part, it wasn’t anything that anyone did really. The forums can be quite slow to catch up to character changes, but usually logging in and out a time or two gets it to update. Can also try changing your password. You already showed up as 80 when I made my reply to you.
MUD’s are OOOOOOOOOLD school. They’re the origin point of the MMORPG, at least when it comes to computers. If you go back any earlier you end up with pen & paper RPG’s.
Basically, take something like Zork, put it online, make it multi player, and have things like combat. It’s where the term “mob” came from. It stood for mobile, meaning something that could move and attack. All other NPC’s in the game (like shopkeepers and such) couldn’t move. You had to type out your commands like in text adventures.
But yeah, that’s where MMO’s started. They didn’t have graphics until Meridian 59 in 1996 (that predates even Ultima Online).
