I hate Torghast, and I used to love it

Torghast in theory sounds like an awesome idea. Solo dungeon, power ups in a rogue like fashion, procedurely generated so we can do it forever. Week 1 I was actually excited to spend hours in Torghast, getting cool powerups and having fun.

In practice torghast has made me hate torghast. I want to put it out there, in my opinion I play 2 OP classes (sPriest and Mistweaver Monk). Torghast has worn me down even with my classes being stronk af.

My biggest problem with torghast is how long the runs take. It honestly takes me over an hour to beat any floor, and the only reason I am doing this is to get soul ash. The rng nature of things complicates runs and makes for some really hellish sittuations. I just got out of two hour+ long failues where the stupid maldrax NPC AI decided to aggro an entire room before I was ready. Now I will be spending 3 hours to complete a single wing, and in my opinion that is too much time.

Something needs to change about torghast or it will begin to wear people down, much like it did to me. The mandatory runs for soul ash are too long. I shouldnt have to get to above 220ilvl to be able to consistently clear a wing in under an hourā€¦regardless of class or group size.

Im not here to simply get mad, my guild gets to suffer through that real time. After talking to numerous people I have a suggestion to alleviate a lot of the ā€œpainā€ of torghast.

Mandatory floors, the ones for soul ash, should take 20 minutes at most to complete, tuned so this remains true at the end of the expac. Its eazy just buff torghast with each raid tier.

Non-mandatory floors should then in turn be harder, and take longer. If i opt into getting my soul crushed into the floor, well then thats my choice.

I donā€™t necissarily agree with adding loot to torghast, as that doesnt align with blizzards philosophy behind it.

tl;dr Torghast is too long, make it shorter pls.

What do you think? What are your suggestions? I donā€™t think I have the definitive answer, but if we put our heads together maybe we can come up with one.

I def think it can be too long, which is why I donā€™t plan to do max layer unless I need to. I donā€™t have the gear yet for 7+ and layer 3 gives more than enough reward for me to breeze through while having fun in a short time.

I do agree with this. While the idea was interesting to me as a mostly solo player, every run I do in Torghast I feel like it was just too long. I donā€™t say that about any of the other content I do.

I think it also may be just a bit more then that too. Length + rng = frustration. too much randomness for the amount of time it takes to accomplish things. I donā€™t mind having to work for certain rewards, but thereā€™s a balance to be had, and in Torghast I think the pendulum swung too far in the wrong direction.

I probably wouldnā€™t mind the RNG if it was shorter, or I probably wouldnā€™t mind the time if there wasnā€™t RNG involved. But any time I think about starting Grindghast and think about the possibility of spending hours in the same content and losing and getting nothing, I browse back over the world quests in hopes I find something that will interest meā€¦then I log out.

On the point of gear: The only gear I think should be connected with grindghast is the vault. I think that there should be a weekly reward for putting up with it and getting to certain stages. a piece of gear per week isnā€™t much to ask for, in all seriousness.

I quite enjoyed it during beta. Iā€™m hoping Twisting Corridors pulls it back for me. Aside from going there for my weekly chores I basically just avoid it now which is kind of awful because it has limitless potential to be an incredible solo challenge progression path for people who canā€™t raid or do M+.

Now isnā€™t a solo dungeon either a group dungeonā€¦

Take into account that Torghast content is supposed to last us throughout this patch as we build our legendaries. You (and most of us) are not even into the equivalent of LFR gear yet. Please do not take that as a slam, because what I mean is that as we gear up the difficulty will balance out and become more reasonable.

Right now you are going at it in hardcore mode. Iā€™m 179 ilvl and I was in Coldheart layer 6 for a good hour - 75 minutes before I killed the boss.

Iā€™m right there with you. The first time I set foot inside I thought it was the coolest thing to happen to WoW in ages, and I was really excited for the rest of it. That didnā€™t last very long, and today I only did a layer 3 and a layer 2 to get just enough ash for a rank 2 legendary. Even with those floors being extremely easy, I just wanted it to be over the entire time. Iā€™m still not entirely certain if I want to go back and spend more time trying to clear other layers later this week.

I appreciate that this thread attempts to suggest fixes for Torghast, instead of just complain about it.

Personally, I feel like it needs a more intriguing reward system. I canā€™t stand how they keep shipping major feature content of an expansion = a currency farm. I hated it for Islands and I hate it for this. Farming currency is just not that exciting. Torghast doesnā€™t even have the mounts and pets attached to it.

Personally, I would love if they attached a solo/small group loot progression system to it. But, since you said you didnā€™t want to suggest adding real loot to the equation, Iā€™ll respect that in this thread.

Instead- they could put some really cool rewards at the top tier. Not a stupid ā€˜maw mountā€™, but really cool looking mounts, mogs, pets, whatever. Then- give us TORGHAST ONLY GEAR that we can obtain IN Torghast. Additionally, they could allow us to work toward keeping the anima powers we like with some sort of badge/phantasma system. That way, it would ultimately reduce the RNG in later runs. Using these methods of empowering our characters in the system, we could then work to ascend toward the cosmetic stuff we like.

Itā€™s in need of some tuning, or itā€™s going to become the new islands.

People arenā€™t saying that Torghast/loot drop rates/etc are bugs. This is the only part of your post I agree withā€“it IS working as intended becauseā€“MIND BLOWNā€“thatā€™s how Blizzard developed it. Iā€™d sure hope that with all of their money, that they actually create game mechanics that work objectively as they are designed, for better or for worse. I will give them that much credit. OTOH, what youā€™re actually saying, going by your posts that include this phrase, is ā€œI like the system.ā€

The Torghast mechanics are annoying, the runs are long and can be unrewarding, and classes have extreme variation in performanceā€“and thatā€™s not even accounting for the atrocious anima power RNG. None of those critiques say that the system isnā€™t workingā€“I and other people just hate how the system works.

I understand, but the vision Ion and the dev team had was to create something that reward effort over time spent. If you put in the effort to gear a high iLevel and learn the mechanics of your class and the Anima Power combos, then the reward will be worth it. If you donā€™t, you can still get rewarded by doing lower layers. This appeals to both casual and hard core, so iā€™m not sure what the issue is.

What part of random number generation can be learned? Iā€™m not trying to be snarky, but the game decides what luck you have in each run. This isnā€™t any different than a card game: shuffle the deck, pull your cards, and get your hand.

Beyond that, Torghast class balance is nonexistant and the majority of folks will agree on that. I think that is a horrible flaw in the system.

There are numerous Rogue-lite gaming communities dedicated to cracking the perfect combinations to perform runs at a successful speed, weā€™re only 3 weeks into a 2 year expansion so itā€™ll take time for folks to figure out what the best strategies are for every spec/class.

It is too long at times which is why I would like to see them add fluff kind of like they did with Island Expeditions. I like collecting stuff so if there is a purpose beyond slogging through these for soul ash then I will do it. I like Torghast, but they did not give enough incentive to keep doing it indefinitely with how long the runs usually take.

You are wasting your time trying to be reasonable with him. Heā€™s a verified troll account.

I was bopping along yesterday after hating on Torghast because Iā€™ll never be able to get through it with my warrior, but doing ok with my DK. Took considerable time to get through. I never played blood DK before. Iā€™m always unholy. The elite guards killed me as unholy pretty quickly, never even had a chance to get to the boss, but I digress. I was actually enjoying the progression, figuring out the timing for the traps and whacking all the jars and stuff. I struggled a little with the elite guards, but muddled through. After what seemed like a couple of hours to clear all the floors, I got to the boss and was unceremoniously killed several times before I gave up.

Now I donā€™t mind it being challenging. I donā€™t mind it being hard. I donā€™t like it to take as long as it does, but I DO hate it being impossible. This is a showstopper for me. Those of you making it through in glorious fashion, good on ya. I play for fun and this isnā€™t fun.

This.

I fully understand that Iā€™m old and slow (lol) so I will be slowly getting the currency to build my legendary item(s). Iā€™m okay with that. But even doing just the first level or two feels like it takes forever. Itā€™s just boring.

Apparently having a different opinion makes you a troll these days, wish more people would have productive dialogue over ad hominem attacks.

Torghast isnā€™t a Rogue-lite, where you get incremental gains towards potential success with each failure. Torghast is a Rogue-LIKE, where if you fail, you fail all the way back to zero and even if you win, you take away nothing that will help you with the next run.

And boy oh boy, when I picked up a MMO what I was really thinking deep down in my heart was, ā€œgosh, I know I purchased thirteen years of monthly subscriptions to a MMO, but what I REALLY wanted to be playing was Dark Souls plus Diablo III plus Darkest Dungeonā€.

I will say that Iā€™ve played Hades (a rogueLITE) and enjoyed it, but in Hades death and failure still gave you something. Even after you ā€œwonā€ there was more story to unlock, weapons to progress, powers to level up, etc. Blizzard doesnā€™t seem to understand why people play that kind of game any more than they understand why people play their own game, though, they just went ā€œpeople like this thing, this thing like that thing, we put that thing in this thing!ā€ and mashed it into a slightly random dungeon that only awards you alternate currency in a MMO with all the finesse of a toddler with a shape table.

Differing opinions with yourself makes you a schizophrenic. I know itā€™s been a while, like a week, but when you start your troll account calling people that defend Shadowlands having ā€˜numb brains,ā€™ then change your stance a couple days later because you are lazy, kinda gives you away.
