I got suspended for an inappropriate name

I’ve just gotten suspended for having an inappropriate name ” in wow classic fresh. Apparently after getting reported a bunch of times. How’s this something you could get penalised for outside of a daycare centre?

Both that name and this one would warrant actions. If it’s a suspension, then you’ve been in trouble for names before.

That’s absolutely wild because I have rocked these usernames for almost all online games and platforms, not once have they been flagged for anything at all until today. These same name have even been used on several active characters since the original classic and no one has had a problem. Admittedly the one time I’ve been forced to name change was a while ago with an actually inappropriate name that I won’t say here, but if “Doodoo” is something offensive then we may as well issue perma bans for swearing

They already do if it’s repeat offenses. Profanity has been against ToS since 2004.

It’s best if you self report your names to prevent further action.

You can have had a name for a very long time and lucked out that it hasn’t gotten reported. But then it gets reported, the report gets verified, and you have to change it and possibly other penalties.

I would highly recommend you go and send in a ticket to self report any other names you have that could get actioned, as self reports will generally only result in a name change (and no escalating penalties).

There’s no auto ban, each one is handle by a person.

From the following link:

Obscene / Vulgar

This category includes both clear and masked language in posts, signatures, and/or links to websites containing such language or images which:

Are an inappropriate reference to human anatomy or bodily functions
Are pornographic in nature

There is no auto ban system. All account actions are done by a GM with 1 exception, Squelches. Squelch is applied automatically after a certain number of reports for chat violations and is temporary and doesn’t lead to account actions unless a GM elevates it because it broke ToS.

Blizzard, while loving their toilet humor, frowns upon players using it for names as it can often be considered masked profanity from my understanding.

Then that raises the question on how “Doodoo” is an inappropriate reference. If this is inappropriate then there are certain elements in the game that should be shut down entirely. There are inappropriate jokes and references in texts and images. Look up the name of the achievement you get when you get timbermaw exalted. At some point you need to admit it gets nitpicky.

Because Blizzard mush follow the ESRB, not the rules players follow. The ESRB has a set number of ‘allowance’ on given topics before they’re bump up in rating. So trying to point at what Blizzard is doing is trying to compare apples to a four wheeler.

Is this really about to turn into another “The rules are bad” thread? It’s starting to look like that. You signed the rules. By doing so you stated you read and agreed to follow them. Not following them has consequences.

The ESRB rates the game content that is pre-made and submitted for review. That content is static, and has to fit into limits for the age rating. WoW is rated Teen for game content.

PLAYER made content (names and chat) is not rated by the ESRB. It can’t be because it is created in real time. That has to follow the game company policy.

For ALL Blizzard’s games and platforms (forums/bnet), regardless of game rating, they have the same code of conduct. A very family friendly code of conduct.

Yes, players have to follow different rules than Blizzard does.

The names were mildly inappropriate. If reported, a GM would be required to flag for a name change, or if it is a repeat offense, a suspension may also be issued.

From the code of conduct I would say it falls under this section

Inappropriate Language

This category includes language and/or links to websites containing such language or images which:

  • Are a mildly inappropriate reference to human anatomy or bodily functions
  • Are otherwise considered objectionable
  • Bypass the Mature Language filter

Because Blizzard said so. It’s THEIR game, and THEIR rules.

That’s up to the ESRB. They have rated the game as T for Teen, and with that rating comes the guidelines that Blizzard must follow in what they put into THEIR game.

Blizzard has their own set of rules for player-made content, which they cannot control. It is more restrictive than a Teen rating, because that’s what Blizzard has chosen for THEIR game.

YOU don’t get to set the rules, YOU don’t get to determine what is fine and what is not fine. Blizzard polices this in THEIR game, according to the rules THEY have set for THEIR game.

You are allowed to report anyone you feel is breaking the rules. There is no requirement that you must be right, or you must be offended, or anything like that. It’s totally up to you.

But other players have the exact same choice, with the exact same non-restrictions. The only thing that matters is if you violated the rules, and yes, having a name that refers to bodily functions is not allowed.

That is a fantastic idea, as they are very lenient when someone recognizes that they make a mistake and is being proactive to solve it.

I get that you are upset the rules exist, and that you got reported, but please don’t exaggerate and make up offenses where none exist. Lashing out at other posters for the consequences of your own decisions, is not ok.

Your choices were inappropriate. That is it. No big deal. Just submit a ticket with the names you need to self report and get it over with.

If you see other names that violate the rules in-game you can report them. They won’t tell you the outcome of the review, but that is the way to deal with others who also break the rules.

How’s it so immature to have come to terms with my mistakes and helping reinforce the codes of practice as an user? I fail to understand why the rules are only applicable to me but not others. Is it so childish for me to want others to be held against the same rules as I did?

I believe the blues here can see edit history.

This character’s name doesn’t violate any of the rules. You can come in with all the hyperbole you want, but the fact remains that you are not accepting that you were punished for breaking the rules, and are now acting childish because no one is on your side about it.

I have no idea where you got that idea. Thousands and thousands of people have been reported for inappropriate names, many thousands have had names changed. Some even get suspensions for repeat offenses.

This is not about you personally. It is about picking names that are not inappropriate for the game. You made some questionable decisions, now you have to deal with it and fix it.

Report others who also make poor choices.

It is like a speeding ticket. Yes, other people also speed. Yes, some people do worse things than speed. That does not mean you get out of the penalty if you get caught.
