Why does it exist?
I think the perception is that the game is far more moderated then before and that could well be the case. There is a fine balance to maintain between those who want to cut loose and have fun and those who turn off their profanity filter then get mad when they see someone use a naughty word.
I think the scales are tipped to far in favor of censorship myself but it isnât like its MASSIVELY in their favor. Just the ease of harming other players through mass reporting leads to people being far more sheepish then before.
If you enjoy that or not really depends if you enjoy the old internet or the new internet more.
Old internet was so much better in terms of socialness. Today itâs like everyone canât be trusted. Not sure how parents handle it with their kids - so many crazies out there.
I wouldnât really say that⊠I watched some wild stuff that does still exist today it is far more hidden and less mainstream.
The wild west versus a office party would be how I would compare the two. Where you wanna be in those two is a matter of taste.
Oh ok, I donât do nasty stuff so would still say old internet had way more enjoyable, interesting socialness. You could chat with people from all over the world.
New guard looking to make their mark.
If youâre afraid to talk now, you were probably the problem in the first place.
I was born in the north and raised in the south from the time I was 6 months old. I grew up saying Maâam and Sir to people (granted instead of saying dad and mom I called my parents by their first names). Now that I have moved back to the north.
I canât count how many times women get mad at me when I say Maâam to them, Iâm not old is typical response. Men it doesnât seem to bother as much calling them Sir, unless they served, and itâs usually do I look like an officer to you son.
The main problem with Discord (2015) is you usually donât invite random people into it to chat verse typing in game. I do have Discord for that rare occasion I get in a piece of content that requires grouping, I can listen but not talk, so I still have to type to get across my comments.
- side note, yes, I know itâs 2024 and people have headsets and microphones to listen to and talk with. Every headset I have ever bought makes my neck hurt while wearing it for even 30 minutes. So, I prefer to listen to people over my speakers from my monitors.
As someone that has been using the internet since 1995 (started with Earthlink), I do feel todayâs gamers seem to get triggered easier than yesteryears gamer. Definitely the advent of voice chat played a big change in how people communicate as well, but that only works if your invited into one of the voice chat programs. Otherwise, itâs crickets in game chat and or worried if anything you ask might get you a chat suspension even if it was benign.
It was a different era. We as children had parents that allowed us to live our lives without much supervision. Most information was still local, cell phones and the internet were new. As the internet evolved, more people started to open their eyes to the real-world problems and started to watch what their children were exposed to. Now those children are the ones having been coddled are super sensitive.
Agreed. But again, I think it was a generation thing. Those who were at the forefront of the internet revolution were raised differently prior to it.

I personally try to chat in game, itâs just that no one usually replies in game as most people are either so afraid to chat, have chat disabled or only talk in secured 3rd party voice chats that they donât need to fear saying something that gets them banned. If I do see someone chat in game, I reply as quickly as I can to let them know an answer etc.
Because overly sensitive people got upset about spit made of pixels and will get their guild to mass report anything they find offensive. Iâll stick to Disc or party chat.
People in game arenât as report happy and bothered by things as the people on the forum. The forum is like twitter-lite.
Not the contract, just the basic game philosophy and paradigm. The rush of raiding and M+ doesnât afford much time to speak. Society IRL as a whole has also been taken over by asocial tendencies thanks to phones and a lack of face to face interaction. People in general are: less social andâŠmore worried about numbers and performance in WoW specifically.
I donât consider spewing garbage in trade chat as being social
Also didnât want to say it but THIS. Granted Iâm on an RP realm and interact with people almost daily.
I always think of this
I would also just observe that as World of Warcraft evolved over the years, it actually kind of became less social, because in an effort to achieve more accessibility, we kind of removed some of the reasons why you need to play with the same group of people over and over.

More choices. More opportunities for easy groups. It ultimately means we can just find another group and puts our individual goals at the center versus working as a dedicated team
The contract didnât kill the social aspects of the game. Itâs because of sensitive Karenâs like this.
See my post was removed. My point was proven.
What if I told you that I swear in the game all the time?
Like, all the time.
And yet Iâve never had an account action. Do you know why?
I know my audience.
Like in real life, you need to judge the appropriate time and place for what passes the brain-mouth (or brain-keys) barrier. Are you in public around a big crowd full of people you donât know? Are you in an instance chat with random participants or people who are unknown to you? Are you in one of the auto-join channels that anyone in a city can see, or one of the open well-known custom channels with people you donât know in it? Then you need to behave on the assumption that you donât know what these strangers will take offense to, so you follow the TOS to the letter and if someone does report you for whatever reason, as long as youâre following the TOS nothing happens to you.
Are you privately whispering a friend? Are you in a small guild full of people that you know very well and everyone is cool with cutting loose? Are you in an invite-only custom chat channel that only has people that you know and know their limits and tolerances in? Are you sitting in your own home with your own family that you know what they are okay with very well? Say whatever you want to the extent of what the people you know will be okay with. If no one reports you, thereâs not any kind of AI chat scanner thatâs going to ding you. Those kinds of chats are at will and as long as no one objects, youâre all good.
But you have to know that youâre in an environment where no one objects. Youâll never know that in a random group or a public chat channel. Youâll never know if thatâs the case in a large workplace. Youâll never know if thatâs the case in a Walmart or standing on a crowded street surrounded by strangers.
This is a critical life skill. Blizzard is trying to help people learn where the lines are by giving out escalating penalties before they start closing accounts. If people choose to not learn those lessons, thatâs on them.
As a pop up to make sure people see there is a Code of Conduct for the game, since no one will read the EULA they signed. Along with giving suggestions on how to be a more polite player.
Your post wasnât removed because you said you like the color purple.
Your post was removed because you were giving misinformation and calling people jerks.
Its a imaginary world where we routinely commit genocide (in lore its supported a few times where players wiped out a race of people).
It isnât that I believe your example is poor. I believe it is comedic that language and tone is the dividing line given the games themes.
