I don't mind extended maintenance whatsoever

But I HATE this crap where they say 10:00am, then 11:00am, then 12:00pm, then 1:00pm, then 2:00pm.

If had known at 9:00am today that the game would be unavailable for eight hours, no problem! I have other stuff to do. I could’ve driven down to the golf course and played some holes. I could’ve gone to the range. I could’ve texted some buddies and gotten together with people. But since it said 11:00am I’m like “oh, whatever, just an hour, I’ll wait”. Except it wasn’t.

8 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours of surprise maintenance is whatever. I don’t care. But please tell us it’s going to be 8, 12, 24 hours of maintenance. Under promise and over deliver even. Tell us it’ll be 8 hours and then have it be 4! That’d be wild.

You think you hate it. I imagine those poor engineers are not having a fun time right now either.

tell me you work in the tech industry without telling me you work in the tech industry

then maybe they should do something to prevent it from happening

I can see you have never worked in IT or software development. Cute.

they should have to start earlier in the morning… like 4am for this very reason.

I’m a healthcare professional. But imagine if I did this to my patients?

“Hello! We’ve scheduled your left knee replacement for 9:00am on the 27th. Please follow these instructions starting the night before and have someone drive you in”

Then, at 8:58am on the 27th, the patient arrives and I go… “Actually, we’ll have to push that back to 9:00am on the 28th!”

Then at 8:58am on the 28th, the patient arrives and I go… “Actually, we’ll have to push that back to 9:00am on the 29th!”

I wouldn’t have many patients.

Dude, tech is not healthcare

So keep imagining because that makes absolutely no sense

You literally have no idea what you’re talking about

I wanna agree with this, but im also a pilot and we get delayed… granted, usually not much longer than an hour or two. But we definitely dont reschedule our flights 2 days in a row and then delay them 4 hours.

And If anyone says getting IT people in an office at 4am is tough once a week… yawn get to work.

You think you dont, but you do.

No they shouldnt.
People have lives just like you. lets make everyone go to the office 3 hours earlier because Batilde just had an idea.

So lets just make this acceptable? Thats terrible logic.

They should be in there earlier on maintenance days… saying they shouldnt because they have lives is a terrible excuse.

Going into the office once a week early isnt gonna kill you or ruin your life. Welcome to the real world.

I guess people in medicine, aviation and retails lives don’t count. hmm

I can see you’ve never worked at a competent IT or software development organization that can properly assess risks and plan for downtime.

Don’t talk down to people on a forum such as this. No one should be spelunking for bugs and making changes outside of a scope during the actual fix as it just cascades into larger issues. Isolate it, patch it, clean it up at the next downtime.

I couldn’t agree more. Even “we don’t know when and it’s going to be a while” would be better than the tease of hour by hour extensions.

Server admins get paid a ton of money because when something breaks, its their job to get it fixed NOOOA.

Youn really dont think someone at Blizzard is getting paid tripple time to be there right now if he wasnt already there? Thats how the IT world works these days.

It’s not. I work for a top 50 company on the Fortune 500 list and we delay tech related things all the time, sometimes for months. It’s just the nature of the business. It’s how it works. Things don’t go as planned, things break, there are multiple companies working with you on the same project. A lot of moving parts and a lot of skin in the game from all over the world.

Not everything is in house / on prem / directly supported by the one company. It’s never the case. Ya just gotta deal with it dude

Start pushing untested updates into production. Bring down access to your clients for hours. Say nothing. Let me know how long you have a job.
