I recall some pets retained spell effects on them, like a oil-covered wolf, or one with an arrow in its head. But these were technically bugs.
It’d be fun if they could re-add some of those.

Just to be clear, the ability to choose pet spec should absolutely be returned to hunters.
I’ll never understand why they took it away in the first place.
And for all the “pvp identifiable” people, that is the weakest excuse of an ‘argument.’
The only REAL difference between the 3 pet specs is ONE (1) ability; a lust, a freedom and a DR. And lust is not even usable, aside from random BGs. (I actually don’t even know if you can still use it in random BGs?)
So, the only real choice in a PvP situation is either the freedom or DR.
There is no reason why it should matter if the freedom/DR came from a tiger or crab… Those are just examples, obviously. The point is that the 3 pet specs are SO boiled down into simplicity, that they can be summed up into a singular ability they give to the hunter.
Unless Blizz plans on adding back unique identity into hunter pets, having them go back to being freely swappable just makes sense.
They used pvp as one of the reasons to delete a warlock pet customization as well this xpack lol, we sorta got it back but only as a cooldown in one spec. Honestly speaking in pvp I don’t care much what a pet does I just kill them and move on.
You know there is a reason why we call the pets anyone can summon “vanity pets” but don’t with hunter pets.
Pets in your pet collection = part of your mog.
Hunter pets = part of your class.
Idk about you guys but I’ve never been able to make my paladin cast bloodlust because I mogged the right cosmetic.
I think pet talent trees is an excellent idea. I mean, if we have them for drakes (even though we eventually get all the talents) they could surely put in a limited choice set as is done for characters.
A goblin suggested it, I am agreeing. Gawd.
Obviously couldn’t be a huge one, given their abilities are limited in choice but still, it is a neat idea.
I remember when certain pets gave raid wide buffs
Now that I think about it, we did have pet talent trees at one point, I think in Cata? I don’t remember how needed it was or if it was good, I was mostly playing Priest back then.

You are correct, I had completely forgotten that.
So Wowhead will tell everyone what pet does 1% dps more than the rest, every hunter will have that pet and groups will kick hunters that dare to bring something else?
OP, congrats. We can respec our pets in 11.1.
Yesssssssssssssssssssssssss! I can finally run nothing but Hellhounds!
Undead Hunters rejoice.
Here are the patch notes under “User Interface and Accessibility” for anyone looking for the source.
Oh…and…YES! Transmog now fully in play.
Hunter pets are part of the hunter’s collection and we used to be able to respec it. Hope that helps/
