I recently tamed a Ravager for TBC Classic out in Azuremyst Isle and no matter what I do it will not gain XP or Loyalty. I’m level 60 and my pet is level 10. I know there will be a grind to level him but I was bored and wanted to anyway. I’ve killed green mobs yellow mobs, went into dungeons, nothing. Not a single point of XP gained. I’ve tried the suggestions of resetting the talents since they come in at -8 TP but still nothing. I was told that your pet gains XP based on the XP you earn but as a level 60, I can’t gain XP (at least until tomorrow). Any suggestions? Worst case I just wait till tomorrow and tame one of the ones that is already in the 60s in Hellfire Peninsula, but wanted to get a jumpstart on loyalty and what not.
It’s my understanding that a hunter pet gains a percentage of the xp you would get for killing a mob. If you aren’t attacking like level 54 mobs (where a level 10 pet won’t last), your pet won’t level up. You’ll need to set it on passive and duke it out with a lot of mobs to level it up. It might be more worthwhile to wait until the portal opens and then go tame one of the higher level ravagers on the road from hellfire to terrokar.
I notice this. My pet still has rank 1 loyalty despite killing hundreds of mobs, having the pet active for more than 40-50 hours and all of these kills being ones that would give the hunter XP normally.
Whenever I ask people about it, they always respond with the canned, tiresome template answers asking me if I trained the pet, if I keep the pet out, if I kill stuff that isn’t grey, etcetc. It’s like no one even understands the bug while its happening.
Originally I thought it was just because level 61 requires a ton of exp to level, so you would think loyalty would take longer to upgrade but this is NOT the case with the amount of mobs I’ve killed.
I think its a bug in prepatch that turned off loyalty gain when the hunter is not getting EXP. It’ll probably go away when the dark portal opens and we gain XP, but this feels prepatch specific since XP cap is raised but XP seems to be arbitrarily turned off because…we aren’t supposed to be getting XP over level 60 and this is affecting loyalty.
XP for lower level pets still works as long as you are killing stuff lower level, but since loyalty seems to be going off the hunter’s exp gain, it seems to be busted too.

Yup had the exact same thing happen with a level 60 boar I tamed from EPL (mainly for rank 8 gore but to also act as a budget ravager until I level mine).
However, I spent hours doing plenty of things with my boar; leveling skinning, farming wintermaw hold rep, doing quests in winterspring… all green mobs. It’s stuck on loyalty level 1.
However the ravager I recently tamed is working as expected. It just hit level 30 / loyalty level 2 after I killed maybe 100 or 150 total mobs. But I killed at least triple that with my boar.
It’s 100% a bug but I haven’t seen anything from other hunters I’ve asked that correlated with my experience so I have no idea what actually causes it
That’s what’s happening with my level 60 wind serpent. Maybe its the fact it is level 60 that is causing the bug. Normally they would gain loyalty exp easy and it would just be a matter of having the pet active but its not the case.
Usually I find hitting it with a newspaper to be an effective method.
For gaining loyalty? Would explain why your level 25 paladin doesn’t have a pet.
Thats why i chose them of the human variety.
I don’t recall but did those level 60 boars always have rank 8 gore? I ask because way back I tamed one and used it a fair bit For PvP, and the inevitable messing around after, plenty in order to learn rank 8 gore. Checking just now, I have no rank of gore, so maybe its always been that way?
The mobs need to be level 52 or higher. Y’all are welcome.

Farmed mobs for hours today in EPL and did not gain 1 level of loyalty, then my pet randomly disappeared at max happiness.
I concur. Sucks this was overlooked, though. Hunter pet bugs are probably lower on the priority list to fix but it should have at least been addressed.
I’m just glad this gets fixed naturally when XP exists again.
I ended up getting a cat from Winterspring. TO get his loyalty up from level one, I went and killed cats in Winterspring for a couple hours. Currently at loyalty level 3. Remember, loyalty ranks increase from not only from the experience the Hunter gets (about half as much), but each rank of loyalty has a timegate on it. To go from 1-2 is 30mins. 2-3 is 60mins, 3-4 is 90mins, etc.
Right. We’re well aware of how the mechanics of loyalty works. But apparently you’re not, since both of the facts you stated about loyalty (30 mins from 1-2 and about half the exp required as the hunter) are both incorrect.

Explain to me how my lower level ravager was summoned and killed less mobs total and is loyalty level 3 now but my boar who has killed ~500 mobs with me now has not leveled up loyalty a single time.
I was out killing mobs in Eastern/Western Plaguelands that were all in the 55+ range for levels and still nothing.
Also having the same issue. I tamed a level 60 cat (Sian-Rotan) in winterspring when I was 60. It was not gaining loyalty in the prepatch and now in Outlands it isn’t even gaining exp.
If you are 60 and the pet is 60, i do not think it will gain XP, it should gain XP once you hit 61
