In a group unless your pet goes first and growls at the start, or the tank is rubbish, it really does nothing outside solo content.
I had a group earlier, healer went AFK so we kicked him, waited and nothing as usual outside of peak hours, took out my spirit beast and off we went. When the tank was about to die I used growl and… nothing.
I tried to use it as best I thought it was needed, monk tank is low health, I pull aggro with my pet and let him self heal, or in instances coming up when you need a second taunt for certain M+ bosses, but that idea went out the window.

As a tank, pet taunts bug me. Their taunts are just as strong as a tank’s taunt.

You sure they are? I set it to auto and still had to manually click it and it done nothing, and this being on a tenacity pet.

Most bosses are immune to it.

With the way WoW is today as far as the dumbing of it, growl should really only work in solo content.
All it does in group content is annoy the tank.

Except for the times you actually need to use it and than apparently this:

Yea pretty much. It’s been dumbed down, but they either need to go fully dumb with it and not allow it in grp content, or allow it.

What annoys me is when you see a hunter with growl on and LFG turns it off automatically…
Even in the open world I don’t use growl, nothing ever gets close enough to even need it.
As Hamstar just stated, most bosses are immune to pet taunts…if I want a boss to keep aggro on my pet [which keep in mind, I only do when I’m soloing usually], I use MD first. I will have to recast MD when it’s back up, as said taunt isn’t going to be effective in many cases.

And some hunters wonder why people get annoyed with them all the time.

Using it strategically on trash mobs is pretty amazing. Sacrificing pets in King’s Rest is the best.

I’ve always found that if the tank has a large amount of agro, the growl would not take it from them right off the bat.
That said, have tried to put misdirect on your pet to boost it’s agro gain? That, combined with growl might help it obtain agro faster the next time your in a group and need to take over the mob.
Not me. i watch son and his team do a 14 man lfr without a tank. They had 4 locks 10 hunters., rest was mix The only thing was last boss. Healer had to go bear twice.
I mean, growl is really just a hunters utility, when no tank is present.
When do I ever use portals outside of a group? Never. I just teleport.

Even that does nothing when the tank knows what they are doing.
But this:
This is what I am planning to do with Marksman spec, since I get 10% more damage without a pet you just res them and let them die to certain mobs to help the group overall.
Like back in the old days when your BM pet would tank one mob to help the actual tank stay alive.
It gets turned off when you zone into group content, because huntards wouldn’t turn it off… and then you’d have mobs eating hunters faces, healers trying to keep idiots alive, and groups wiping.

Yeh I realised this, but there are still some hunters who wonder why people get annoyed with them in group content. You know, maybe try not turning your pet taunt back on for trash.
But than it sometimes goes both ways, I got yelled at the other day for taunting without a pet cause the tank couldn’t hold aggro.
There’s a bug that sometimes doesn’t turn it off, even when the icon on the pet bar indicates that it’s off. I’ve sometimes had to click and click it again to turn it off. Sometimes a UI reset fixes the icon visual not matching its state.

Nah hunters just have a long legacy of being annoying as heck.
Remember that one ability that made the group run fast till smacked then i think it stuned the one attacked.
Or barrage…oh god the horrors.
Huntard legacy is long and pesky.
