Songs are shapes first, and colors second to me. Even to this day when I hear an old song I immediately see that. I associate the shapes with the chord progressions, and the color with the mood inflected, I guess.

I self-taught myself on a number of rock instruments in the 80-90’s. That’s likely how I was able to learn songs and store them in my 1 Mb of ram.

“Only stringed instrument I have played decently was a Bass Guitar. But that is because I love rhythms, and beats. I prefer to beat on drums, of ANY kind.”

The interesting but not yet verified thing is that because we teach our kiddos with interactive toys that have a lot of sound/shapes/colors - part of our musical learning may be wired super duper early.

Like did a kiddo have one of those rainbow xylophones and now as an adult associates that tone to a color because of said toy? Same with shape, some of the toys that have a shape and play a certain melody when pressed might be early brain learning that the individual just doesn’t recognize is a latent memory.

I played 6-string guitar during my 12-30s, but after a long break I started playing the drums in my mid 40’s when I started a band with guys from work. All guitarists, but no drummer.

I had the practice room, and I bought an electronic drum set because it had a volume knob. The cymbals on a regular drum set can be very loud. The starter set cost $1,500 and what I ended up with after 7 years was nearly 10x that. Think of buying a boat and how cheap it starts.

Side note about drums:

I spent a good deal of my early adult life playing with bands in Augusta GA, which is the hometown of James Brown. A friend of mine was hired for the rhythm guitar slot, and got to tour Europe. Before he left he asked if he could borrow my drum machine to practice on the road. About a year later he found me in Athens, GA to bring back my drum machine, along with a handful of posters from all of the places he played. :sunglasses:

“My fave Drums are native drums, like I said before. My DREAM Drum is one I can’t afford, even if I could find one. It’s an original Fat Boy Congo Drum. The difference is, the drum head is attached like on a Djembe. Little to NO metal. I find the metal messes with the drone of the drum. I don’t like that, BUT I WANT A CONGO DRUM!!! So the search for the elusive Fat Boy Congo Drum continues.”

“I fell in love with the Fat Boy Congo Drum, back when I was in my early 20s, when I got to play one in a giant drum circle, that lasted over 24 hours. We took turns.”

I don’t know if I’ve said it already, but thank you for making this topic Cyndilou.

This is a wonderful place to just hang out for a bit.

'I can link you a sampling if you’d like, I’m also on Spotify: .http.s://open.spotify.com/track/6UOfqAZ2Qwbg6cKrKgPjBj?si=217ef5fcbfaa4d66

I put .‘s in front so you can still get the link without me directly linking it. Apparently Blizzard doesn’t like me doing that so I try to adjust it accordingly  , I recorded that in 2021’

‘That is fascinating to me, Synesthesia encompasses shapes also. For me it is mood to color, emotions to color. I also have memory to color (which is mostly emotion based but does have roots in other things also). To date I have approximately 5 to 6 different kinds of concurrent synesthesae. Including Mirror-touch which emulates other peoples feelings as they go through their daily lives, it helps me understand other people and that is exactly how I apply that. It is akin to but not identical to an empath, most empaths feel what others feel, however I feel beyond that, it is like you strike your hand, I immediately can feel that pain, it is how I know how to address those situations and causes. Things like, if I see your hand under a naked flame I will immediately already have an ice pack and cold water running because I know what is going to happen next through shear thought, not through perception of I have seen this before, but I feel it, I feel the burning in my own hand in the same spot yours is. That is just an example but that is how my mind works. It is very weird true, but I feel those things’

'Humbly, I am just one of many. The way I do things is weird. But that is how I’ve always done things. It is how I heal in game, I heal by color, I see what is happening, I reacted emotionally because I actually care about the raid. I care if people die, I see it as a failure if I do not heal. That is why I like what I do.

I challenge myself that if everyone in the raid lives, I am happy and I am doing well. If someone dies, I take it personally, I do my best to make sure things are the way they should be. I reflect this in my life, disappointment may be an ever-present, but it is not a be-all end-all scenario. It is a learning curve, as long as I am always learning I will get better. I see this as growth. But that is how I use my way of seeing the world. I like to learn, but I love to help others more than that.

That is what is important to me. That is why music is so weird to me. It helps me emotionally, but it may not necessarily help others. It’s an oddity for me, that is why I don’t sit there and say ‘I am good at this’ I simply say ‘I can do this’ Because I can.’
