How's max level casual battleground experience?

I’m a filthy casual who loves battlegrounds – been playing retail again for a few months but it’s very rough for a new level 60 in terms of getting pvp gear unless you want to run arena, which I really don’t enjoy.

I don’t mind a grind to get pvp gear, but the power differential is massive. What’s it like in TBC? If I just want to settle in and run random battlegrounds, is it a fun experience? What are the queues like?

Queues are good. S1 arena gear purchasable with honor during next season (couple weeks).

Pretty good time to jump into PvP if you haven’t been playing. If you can bank some honor in the next couple weeks you will be even better off…I suggest doing that.

Only thing that will suck is not having the blue PvP set from revered factions. You will be very squishy until you can get that blue set or save enough honor for S1 pieces.

Are you sure about that?

My queues as Alliance are always 1-2 minutes. For Horde its never over 5 mins (although I haven’t played my Horde toon in awhile so that could have changed).

And yes, S3 is when you are able to buy S1 gear with honor. End of season 2 is Jan. 11th.

I have not had a queue under 10m in the last 2 weeks on alliance. Some go 20+

Weird. I only do BGs and Arena and I have never had a BG queue over 5 mins.

Generally they pop within 2 mins…I can’t even make it to the auction house from the BG room most times.

I’ve been playing every week too and it’s never been that high in my experience.

Mostly fun. I complete daily BGs on 4 toons everyday and enjoy it.

Overall its a fun experience. Blizzard made a few changes that greatly improved the pug experience. You are much less likely now to face a pre-made if you are solo or in a group of 5 or less (I havent tried to do a bg with more than 5 ppl in a while, so I can’t speak to a larger size group).

My que times for all BGs are relativley quick. Usually less than 3 min of actually time in que for AB and EoTS. AV and WSG are quick to, AV maybe a couple min longer. Another poster said 20+min, but I find that odd. I have not experienced a que that long since same faction bgs were implemented. I wonder if its possible that user is referring to a SoM server, or if players of the majority faction on mega servers experience longer ques (perhaps to prevent premades quing in 5 person groups from circumventing the pre-made versus pre-made match making).

EDIT: There is a noticeable difference in power with a big gear difference. However, doing pug BGs you can do a good job of closing that gap with PvE stam heavy gear or the revered reputation gear that provides your entry level resilience gear.

The queues aren’t an issue due to FvF (except in AV where the queues are also not bad). Unless you are OCE or low level. If you are one of those good luck even doing BGs.

There are some issues with gear, you will get killed fast unless you get revered rep and blue gear. Or deal with it until some PVP gear. It’s probably not as bad a Retail though. Lower levels either don’t run or are full of twinks where the gear shows.

I’ve found the quality of TBCC battleground to be very low, for the most part, there are a lot of give-ups/people who will fold quickly and don’t ever want to play objectives. I guess if all you care about is killing other people and not playing the BGs the way they are designed you’d enjoy them.

I find the quality of SoM BGs to be much better and there is even less gear discrepancy in SoM.

Did Blizzard adjust the match making system in SoM similar to TBC? IMO, classic’s bg experience was hurt by having very frequent pre-made vs pug games. My recollection of BGs towards the end of classic was playing 5 games of pugs vs premades for every 1 game of pugs vs pugs

You are going to spend the entirety of battlegrounds in the grave yard until you spend 100+ hours getting some basic gear

Unless you play a stealth class, which I highly recommend.

BG are full of people in full pvp gear and you will do almost no damage to them at all.

There’s still some of this just like it still can happen in TBCC (even with the matchmaking) but it’s not to the extent that it happened in Classic.

The good thing is most of the time the people who you pug with want to play. A lot came back to SoM for BGs so there are a lot of try-hards (objective-wise) who play hard. Which I guess is good or bad based on what you want. For me it’s good.

If people are enjoying TBCC BGs that’s great, I haven’t been too happy with them sadly. I only have done a few Shadowlands BGs so it’s hard for me to compare TBCC BGs and Shadowlands BGs.

The main reason I’d recommend to the OP to try SoM is they are concerned about gear discrepancy and that really is less noticeable in SoM because it’s still new enough.

Forgot to add—you are going to want to play at least 10 games a week in Arena and start banking some points.

Aim for 5’s (that’s what will yield the most points)…but if you can’t find a 5’s team…at the very least get in 10 games of 2’s/3’s. You don’t have to be serious about it but you definitely want the minimum amount of points each week. On the mega servers there are plenty of people trying to get their 10 games a week so you shouldn’t have trouble doing that if you go to a mega server.

AB was 3 minutes this morning for me on Bene. I can’t speak to how it would have ended though… I had to take a work call and \afk out 2 minutes after it started.

I’m seeing lots of people in full PVE gear too, not quest greens but dungeon and raid gear. They do good damage but are still squishy. Probably not a big deal for ranged classes, but not a fun time for melee.

I’ve always loved running into meta-sheep leather daddy warriors and paladins in BGs. They have minimal armor and stam… Warriors and paladins should not be killable (or close to it) inside a global from a ret paladin.
