last night my guild started chewing on heroic (I know we are a bunch of casuals and are behind)
Looking over warcraftlogs it says that for our huntsman kill I was in the 18th percentile. I did about 4k dps while raidbots shows that for my gear I can in a perfect world do 4500… close enough in a non perfect scenario imho.
I’m not claiming to be a great player. But I’m always trying to be better. What I am asking is when it says 18th percentile is that overall against ALL shadow priests on that fight regardless of ilvl or does that weight for ilvl? I thought I did pretty pretty decent being the #2 DPS on that fight)
(since I don’t have the trust lvl for links search for Johnoliver on warcraftlogs… Ignore the shriekwing kill… we are just pretending I wasn’t half asleep and got smacked when I should have been hiding.)

There are options to just select based on ppl with the same ilvl.

and by level

Yes, it’s comparing you against people with 10-15 more item levels. Based on item level, you parsed at 57%. Not amazing, but respectable.

The 18% is compared to all shadow priest logs uploaded within the past 2 weeks.
Your 57% if you go to Damage Done underneath “ilvl %” is compared to all shadow priest logs uploaded within the past 2 weeks between 196-198 ilvl.
Look at Bracket, bracket will give you a rating based on your item level vs everyone who killed it with a similar ilvl bracket as you. Overall is all logs.
Are you logging yourself? or just going by your raid leader’s logs?

Bracket you got a 38 on Sire, 1 on Shriekwing (Died?) and a 28 on Huntsman. You could get a lower score if it takes longer to kill the boss too and since you have a small group that can factor in.

Should turn on advanced combat logging, and record your own logs. Just to be sure you’re capturing everything you do. Then you can upload your own logs to WCL or Wowanalyzer. Better representation of what you’re doing, and where you can improve.
Shriekwing? what shrielwing never happened…
I TOTALLY didnt faceplant halfway through while tunnel visioning dodging the sonic puddles and ate one of his shrieks as punishment.
NOPE! NEVER HAPPENED!! GOT IT?!!?
Another thing to note:
I ran a quick sim on your character, your Patchwerk 1 boss sim is 4700, but Huntsman is not a Patchwerk fight. If you sim a Patchwerk 2 boss for example because of the first and third bear, your sim says you should be capable of 5570. Or maybe a Cleave Add 2 boss setup that puts you at 5700. Take those with a grain of salt because I don’t know the exact profile for simming Huntsman, if anyone reading this does though let me know.
If your guild is progressing in heroic, the logs are gonna look like dooky for the first couple of kills for several bosses for several specs, that’s just how it goes when needing to know when to be using your cooldowns, rotations etc.

dont listen to this guy. anything blue and above is good.
What do you think respectable means?

I’m good with respectable. I’m not pretending to be a super amazing shadowpriest doing +20s and downing mythic nathria bosses. I’m an average dude doing an average job. I’m quite content with that.
Ty for the compliment.

57% is barely above average. That’s not BAD, but it also isn’t good. It’s decent. I’d aim for above 70% to start classifying it as good. Above 90% is great, and 95%+ is amazing.
You’re item level is not very high. You will always be outdps by people who are 10-20 item levels higher than you even if you played perfectly. Sorry.
What’s more important for you now is at least compare to others in your ilvl bracket AND…
Learn to look at the timeline bar, boss uptime, damage per ability, overall ability casts, dot uptime, ect.
The timeline bar helps understand my sequence rotations better. For an example, if I see 5 pyroblasts in my entire combustion when guides tell me I should fit 7-9. This is definitely a sign of rotation improvement.
Or how are my dot uptimes? If they are below 95% on a stationary fight, this is a good time to also learn to improve your dot management.
And how many abilities I cast is important. Always casting is the general big rule for damaging as a caster. No cancels or anything of that sort. If it is the wrong ability, well too bad.
How well was your cool management? Should use it on opportunities when bosses take 100% increased additional damage taken OR when you know a boss isn’t going to do some big jumbo mechanic.
If this is a progression fight, however, that lasts over 5+ minutes. Don’t expect very high parses.

Depends on “where” you are looking; the ranking on the far-left is comparing you to literally everyone for your class/spec that ran that encounter and parsed.
A far more useful metric is on the far-right which compares you with your ilvl bracket (which anything above 60% is “fine” for heroic).
Parse rankings are generally dependent on combat efficiency and fight length; for combat efficiency I mean doing things like pre-potting, using weapon oils, flasks, food, augments, and general responsibility in the fight.
A kill is a kill as I generally say; it’s nice to compare to others but focus more on just moving the needle forward, if you were in the 18th percentile this week shoot for 35th percentile next etc.
Generally I look at this page as a DPS;
https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/6bMHNaPrfAj4FD8X#fight=13&view=rankings
and toggle between damage/boss damage.
I wouldn’t get discouraged, looking at your peers you did fine in comparison.
WoWanalyzer is not as accurate as people thought.
Preferrably, you can link your logs to someone who knows their shiz in a Class Discord. But sometimes that can take a while.
