How to play rogue in PuG battlegrounds?

I am a really good duelist and arena player, but I cannot figure out how to play rogue in BGs. You get insta focused, you are useless, no dmg unless you use consumes. Sapping is good but your CC sucks in a non-premade, cuz everyone breaks it.

also super squishy and no defensives

Depends on which bg you’re talking about.

Usually avoid team fights. If you do team fight, lock down the healer. Alternatively, chill in the back and peel for your healers.

Wsg-play defense in flag room. Or slow their flag carrier while controlling other team.
Ab- ninja cap, guard a node. Etc
Av-defense, peel, cap a bunker. Backcap. Go ahead of your team and start capping gys/bunkers

Play objectives. Never engage in group fights if you group fight on rogue you will die every time. Nobody is gonna heal you over the warrior. And everyone is gonna splat you first cause your stuns and kicks and poisons are obnoxious.

its hard to back cap GYs alone, and you don’t get honor for it. You also don’t get honor for defending flags or backcapping flags in AB. You also don’t get much honor defending WSG flag, especially in a PuG vs PuG.

Sap the healer, be called a hero.

Well, in a PUG no one may notice but I personally love rogues who sap healers. Of course, easier said than done.

Beyond that it depends on the BG. Just do em and watch what other rogues do, lots of varied tactics, especially a grp of 3 rogues,… when helping a standard group you can assist or attack someone off to the side. But really so much. 2 rogues can win a WSG by killing the efc, 2+ stealthers can cap stuff in AV or get the bonus honor, in AB can roam and fight with team or find solo defenders, sap and cap it…

I see rogues do all kinds of different stuff.

This is a legit question. I’ll share my experience. I enjoy pvp, but I’m just okay at it. Having said that, each BG presents a different challenge, from a rogue perspective.

In AV, depending on how the match is going, I tend to like to serve as a distraction. If there’s a stall at the SH GY/IWB choke point, and it isn’t going anywhere, I’ll slip through the crowd and ninja the south bunker, typically. That’s just one example. Helping to back cap towers taken, or assisting in getting Snowfall is another example. As for the combat in AV, get in and get out. Pick off clothies. Assist on the front line, but don’t pretend like you’re wearing plate. Rogues don’t last long on the front line in AV, so act accordingly.

WSG I act as support - either on defense or offense. I’m not a huge fan of WSG, but that’s just personal preference.

AB is similar to WSG for me, although I play a little more aggressively. If nobody stops to cap the farm on the way out, which is surprisingly often, I’ll suck it up, cap and stay. Otherwise, I’m going to attempt to support, again, either the main group of people or a smaller group going for a node like the stables or otherwise.

One tidbit: stun/kick/cheap shot casters. If I can delay or prevent a frostbolt or heal or whatever spell an opponent is attempting to land, then that little bit may help swing a skirmish in your favor. Yeah, this is rogue 101, but I find interrupting spells extremely satisfying. YMMV.

It depends on the bg.

But you can definitely engage in group fights and do well. I generally remain stealthed in the main group and when warriors charge in typically cheap shot, backstab, kindey shot. Then back off let the team do work on the stunned player and restealth.

If I have a good place to drop in, or a good flank, when I have sprint + evasion + maybe vanish but more of a nice to have than needed, then I’ll engage with the warrior line or go around and kill heals. When I get focused, I wait for a slow and imp sprint + evasion back into my group. Typically many players tend to follow me into my group hoping for the kill and end up dying themselves from over extending.

I play very hit and run, I use sprint and run around the enemy group during a full engagement backstabbing people and moving to the next for another backstab. Don’t sit 1v1, if you get slowed back out to your group. Restealth and eat frequently.

I use crip OH when I have WF, or crip OH and wound MH if I don’t have WF.

try and find a base in AB with only one person…sap cap it…ask for help…

wsg just follow the flag or guard the flag before its picked.

av just cap towers back and kill those trying to cap them.

Just a flaw in the honor system but it’s what rogues are good for. Flag runners and healers have some of the same problem s

Ok so are you trying to farm honor or play to your class strengths. Two different things

Well, both. I am a solo ranker trying to get rank 14 (11 atm). But I also wanna play well so I don’t die stupidly and actually contribute. I could potentially just sit around battles in stealth, but that is so boring and also lame for the team.

you are trying to be good, not maximize your honor earnings. You should be ccing healer before they join the team fight but after the front line has already charged in. If you fail ccing healer then just focus them. You really just want to avoid the main bulk of the fight and kill casters who are far away from the group.

yes i attempt to do that, but its after that is where i am lost. In the middle of the battle, if I start to CC a healer I will get focused hard and die quick.

Oh so the enemy team peeled for their healer. Sounds about right. Not sure anymore what you’re trying to achieve. Sounds like you wanna be Superman where you’re focusing healers without dying, farming as much honor as the bulk of the group while staying alive. This isn’t really realistic outside of premades. As a rogue. Either you’re controlling healers, being an annoyance to enemy casters or you’re playing defense/offense. Otherwise you’re not playing efficiently. It’s a team game. If you’re going to team fight, focus the healers, peel for your healers, control. Otherwise you’re gonna have a bad time

sure but it feels like rogues just die so quick while other classes can get out dmg b4 dying idk.

Maybe but no class has as much control as a rogue.

Blind, kick, gouge, kidney, sap, cheap shot, vanish, dr cheap shot.

Your class is annoying

i know but it makes me think im doing something fundementally wrong in BG play, since I die to quick.

Very doubtful. If I’m in a bg, as a lock, I focus rogues in group fights. If not to peel for my healer, it’s mostly because if they focus me, I know I’ll be dead soon enough

Be the thorn in their team’s side. Be exactly where they don’t want you to be. Disrupt as much as possible. -insert other equally unhelpful vague comments here-

Your job should be 90% kill/stunlock healers. The other 10% is sap.
