Currently looking at 3-4 alts I’d like to get prepped for cata with the JJ buff. How fast is the current gamma catch up? Big fan of the RDF catch up mechanics reminds me a lot of alting during the original ICC
Cataclysm has its own catchup in the leveling process so you dont need to catch up before release.
Depends on what you mean, but you can look at all the gear you can buy and add up all the totals to see how much currency you’d need for what you want. You get one triumph emblem per boss and a bonus 2 for completing a random. You get one scourgestone per boss from gamma as well. Emblems can be downgraded.
This, and you can get started before you even enter Cata zones.
Cata green BoEs start at level 77 with an ilvl of 272, and the greens at level 80 are 289. You can get some 308 blues as well. Basically replaces anything right off the bat, except for gemmed/enchanted ICC-25 gear.

catch up is fine if u buy boes and can do gammas without getting kicked
Cataclysm dungeon blues and rep items will replace level 80 stuff. Best you can do is just level levels and professions. Buying looms as well if you have levelers. Maybe get some quests completed in advance so when level 85 is opened you can gain a few bars.
Came back 10/6. Last week I was raiding ICC. Im just a tick behind the guild mates in GS with 5.4k many of them pushing 5.8 to 6.
1 week to level
2-3 weeks for grinding regular heroics then gammas.

When cata launches make sure to start collecting cata greens right away. Its a massive upgrade from what you’ll likely be wearing.
