How do you keep aggro as a tank?

My dad and I play human paladins together. I’m healer and he’s tank. We are both just above level 30. Lately we have been grinding dungeons because of the XP and the (almost zero) wait time. He has trouble keeping aggro, and usually I see people either run ahead and aggro mobs themselves (intentionally or unintentionally), or when he’s fighting something other hostile mobs start attacking the dps or me instead of him. Last dungeon we did, he got vote-kicked for trolling (he’s not). He says something like he can’t auto-select, and it’s a pain to manually taunt every mob.
Could someone help? Maybe a macro or something?

AOE. Tanks really shouldn’t be losing aggro, even at the lv 30 range. Use whatever AOE you have available and tab target through mobs to keep aggro up on all of them. Spend talents on AOE abilities. I don’t have a paladin, but I know there’s a talent to make avengers shield hit on 3? targets instead of 1. Consecrate is another good one.

Honestly there it is

Leveling is super unbalanced so, until like 60+, most dungeons are just kill fests

Decided to remove the video I linked due to possible complaints about mild language

oh I dont care lol

I can see there being some strange scaling issues in leveling dungeons that would cause dps to be doing enough damage to rip threat.

But otherwise, it sounds like he probably just needs to get more comfortable with the spec/role. Between Avenger’s Shield bounces, Consecration ticks, and that spinny hammer thing, AoE threat shouldn’t be an issue for a paladin. I don’t know how much of that they have access to at low levels, though.

Also, it might help him to make sure he’s got a nameplate addon that shows which mobs are currently aggro’d on him vs other members of the party.

Whats the addon?

on the third row, far left as a paladin is the choice node between Blessed Hammer or Hammer of the Righteous. If he’s using Blessed Hammer then just spamming that out plus slapping down consecration wherever should cover most mob pulls. If it’s Hammer of the Righteous, it also does AoE but it’s dependent on being inside consecration. I like it thematically, but it’s important to make note of that disctinction lol

Otherwise spamming out Shield of the Righteous should do enough aoe to pull things, plus will give some armor.

There’s definitely things to do to min/max more, but if you’re just vibin in dungeons that’ll cover most use cases

Any nameplate addon should have that feature. Plater, Threat Plates, and KuiNameplates are three off the top of my head. Plater isn’t very user-friendly, though (as far as I know)…so probably stick to one of the other two.

Yeah, should be.

TL:DR Get to current expansion content
Level scaling, plus all the squishes, has completely broken levelling. Lvl 10s with full sets of ilvl 57 gear, sockets, enchants. Killing bosses in seconds. Even if you could hold threat in those situations, there’s no need for it. Those lvl 10s may as well be invincible.

You shouldn’t need to use taunt that often. Taunt is for correcting mistakes, and for tank swaps in raiding. Just use your rotation, and assuming a roughly equivalent gear level (again, current expansion) threat won’t be a problem most of the time.

It also takes more to get threat back than it does to start with it. Basically, if someone else is pulling the mobs (other than misdirect/tricks of the trade) you’ll find it harder to recover threat. That’s their fault, most likely. Again once you are past the “tutorial” of levelling, this can be solved… just let them die.

…Consecration is not an aggroholder. It is not priority. Your cleave shield, Avenger shield, and judge are.

Though I couldn’t tell you when you learn any of those respectively

on my warrior i follow the rule of STOMP EM IN THE NUTS. and thunderclap everything i can, as well as revengeancate upon them.

demon hunter is so sparkly with immolation aura it aggros everything so i don’t gotta worry there.

Bear just mauls everything while pooping out moonbeams.

i see some new players pull with taunt and it not only does nothing for hitting the rest of the pack, but also puts your taunt on cd if you need it

1: install threat plates or whatever addon you like that changes color if you have threat on a mob.

2: press blessed hammer to get one holy power and to get one started spinning around you

3: pull with avenger’s shield while running into the pack, and press judgment on any mob avenger’s shield didn’t hit

4: as you get into the pack, turn around so all the mobs are in front of you, and facing away from the group

5: blessed hammer again, shield of the righteous, and consecration. now it’s just a matter of hitting stuff and keeping the buff from your shield of the righteous active

You ever see URIST 3: REVENGE OF URIST? This is canonically how I envision my Guardian Druid holding aggro.

If you drop consecration and press avengers shield, I genuinely don’t know how you’re losing aggro.

I’m not trying to be mean.

Is he pressing tab to select different targets?
