How do people with tons of hours in modern WoW have fun?

Or playing really really badly. I play badly and none of my 16 characters only use 2-3 buttons on any longer fight.

I went solo to help out my main guild but there is only so much you can do solo. Plus it’s an MMORPG it was meant for you to make connections online and adventure if guilds are no longer providing that function then the economy of WoW has failed somewhere down the line.

Cursed forge GSE which is an advanced macroing compiler, it allows your entire rotation into one button. I concur though I never got mine set right for arenas or pvp, but I also played tank. So it would say defend defend instead of attack attack. :joy:

wut

Exactly. Like… has this person literally never played with friends?

I don’t get it.

Oh. Well, there it is.

Only reason i started playing again. If they arent on im typically doing something else.

I generally only play when I have friends playing. If they cancel their sub for a while, I burn out pretty quickly. Once I have a group together again, I resub and have fun for a while.

For me, it’s pushing M+

You mentioned “most classes are 3 buttons”, but that’s only true if a handful of classes. As someone with ADHD and who gets bored easily, I can’t sit on those “minimal buttons with a CD” specs, or at least not for long.

I’ve mostly been maintaining druid, and Boomie is objectively the most boring spec in the world to me because of how simple it is, there’s basically zero dynamic play nor liquidity when compared to other DPS classes, and resto and feral are both more engaging by a longshot.

As feral, you sit around 5-6 primary buttons and your CD, but the nuance is that instead of a single rotation, you have a pocket of mini rotations where you have to be able to execute each as well as the other AND match them to the right situations. You have one of the most powerful and free offheals in the game, strong utility, but to play the spec well you need to be constantly assessing game state.

Resto druid, by comparison, might have the largest amount of action variety in the core play than any other spec. When healing, youve got a toolkit where each heal has a TYPICAL use case, but you can’t ever treat the kit as a hard and fast rule because the game state can change rapidly from a misplay or two. You have a DPS rotation that requires you to shift form, but to use it effectively you have to have strong encounter sense and set yourself up for long(er) pockets to remain in cat. Grove guardians is an off global Swiftmend/wild growth that sticks around a bit for some triage, and utilizing that spell between extra healing (throughput moments) versus triage to stay in cat (DPS push) is a fluid playstyle. Resto druid also has one of the few masteries in the game where you can be rewarded for shifts in your usual flow, for example, gaining more throughput from otherwise suboptimal lines IF your play is tight enough. But your DPS isn’t “just send”, because you have one of the strongest healer ST damage in the game, so being able to quickly identify the right DPS target on a pack per pack basis becomes a thing, where you may even deviate your choice based on how your group is playing or your comp. You’ve also got access to Shadowmeld as NELF, which gives you a 2 minute CD to decide between sending for extra damage on rake versus using it as a stun option. The resto druid playstyle is insanely fluid and dynamic, down the key/group/content level, that you’re basically making micro decisions and observing the game state at a granular level to play it better and better, creating a “how can I best myself?” aspect.

As you climb in M+, those moments compound. And eventually, even game knowledge needs to shift. For example in Throne of Tides last season, the first mini boss spews a cone into a DoT, and has trash that can bleed. If that overlapped on someone at a 25 or under, you could triage immediately to stabilize and then make decisions while you recover. At a 26+, that same line could now do enough damage that you have a single global to make the save if you didn’t already have HoTs on the target. At that point, the same keys you’ve been running have effectively changed juuuuuust enough to give you some new things to respect.

M+ itself basically have “buckets” of content metas, and a player moving up and up will experience more of these subtle shifts in routes or play or encounter dynamics, and THAT is VERY engaging for me

The thing is, you also have to be mindful of your motivation. If your goal is “get the carrot in the stick”, then you catch your carrot once you time a 20 (now a 10) in each dungeon in the current rotation. If your goal is to “be the best at the content you can be”, you may go closer to the last seasons 22-25 range, hit 3k rating, and stop. You may find friends along the way who wish to push higher, and suddenly, you have a goal to try your hand at the MDI or Great Push or the 0.1% title, whether you can actually achieve these things or not

That said, I also get bored of raiding fast. I enjoy progression on bosses when the progression itself is challenging, but I hate when I play in groups where I’m waiting for others to catch up after 20 or 30 or a bazillion pulls.

I’m fully capable of playing at a Mythic CE level, but the artificial roster barrier and ancient lockout style basically makes that content lane dead for me as my life schedule out of game just doesn’t have space for such things.

As a person, I’m also someone who craves constant engagement and challenges, so I can keep going higher and higher until I encounter some barrier, usually not having access to other people at the times I’ve got available to me, and then I may swap classes to try another that I enjoy (Disc priest is great in this lane!)

But if I don’t have the potential for something to push myself to play tighter, I get bored. Quick. In both Modern WoW and ye days of olde

There’s always some open-world thing or old achieve that I still haven’t collected to go farm for.

I’m not going to be one of “those people” and start scouring your profile/ RIO info.

I’ll just politely look VERY SUSPICIOUSLY at this comment, and … go back to finishing my Northrend Dragon Races.

Take care.

Even in “bad” expansions I’ve managed to have fun overall.
MoP was the funnest PvP I’ve had in this game, WoD I really enjoyed some classes (druid, enhance, etc)

In your post you mentioned fast forwarding towards a more modern experience, I can say as a whole, old raids were a lot easier than modern ones.
This has basically been shown in the classic experience. Once you have even a basic amount of information clearing through content is stupidly easy. That isn’t just a retail WoW issue. Some of the server firsts/world firsts in Classic were done with green non-optimal gear or with wildly weird comps just because.

As far as the 1-2 button + situational options, that’s basically been how some classes have felt for a long time. *go look at old rotations for some of the classes.

As far as burnout, honestly my best recommendation is just to take breaks in-between.
One of the best things I’ve ever done for myself was to not grind out every little thing and just take time to do literally anything else. It’s helped me in a lot of other MMO’s as well.

For me, I actually removed abilities from the action bar and refuse to use them. I play as a Paladin. I don’t use Avengers Shield. It’s so stupid. I also hate what they did to Judgement. I loved Judgement in classic and how it had different effects based on the Seal used. Now they turned a Paladin into a Hunter with holy spells but instead of a gun I have 7 different magical hammers and a shield I can pull out of thin air and toss at enemies lol. No thanks.

Of course I miss out on certain bonuses because I won’t use certain abilities but it makes the game a little bit more challenging when taking on 3 or 4 enemies at the same time. I do miss the challenge of classic mobs. 1 could be a challenge. 2 or more you’d probably die if you didn’t have healing or potions.

All just my opinion though but I definitely agree with you.

I switched to healer because DPS was far to rinse and repeat for me. Sure I only have maybe 5-6 abilities, some pulls I only use 2, but the constant monitoring of health bars for both enemies and allies, watching for casts and dispels, seeing where I can help with regards to positioning and whether the tank needs an external CD, balancing DPS with HPS, always being aware which CDs will be used in which fights and at what times… Suffice it to say, it keeps me busy and it really makes no two dungeon runs the same. My guildies are always wanting a healer to run keys with so I’ve always got a group.

When I’m done on dungeons or raids, there’s always pet battle weeklies and working towards achievements. Time walking weeks are great for grinding old reps to be able to buy those cosmetics. PVP is a really quick and fun way to experience a new playstyle for your spec. Going through older content for missed mounts or pets or toys is always good. Then finally, there is the joy of sitting down and fishing while listening to a podcast.

The cliche, and accurate, answer is that WoW is an MMO, which is most fun when enjoyed with friends.

When my M+ group is done for the season, so am I.

Also, from one 30+ gamer to another: it might just be the lens of time. Not that you’re wishing it was 2004 again, but you certainly viewed the MMO differently when you were younger than you do now. I know I did. What I do for fun has adapted as a result of that shift.

Where did you look this up?

Uhmn… you must not be playing the classes correctly… even BM Hunter has 3 cooldowns alone outside of their basic 2/3 buttons.

I can’t think of a class that can keybind their rotation with less than 12 buttons…

Generally just by playing with friends. Having the banter in discord can make the game enjoyable even at the end of the season when people are more burnt out (along with avoiding the less fun dungeons, uldaman etc.).

And then when people start to burn out we start to play other games, and come back when theres new content to do, either a new season, or expansion, (or plunderstorm).

There’s no “trick”; just do the content you enjoy.

which classes only have 3 buttons? I play them all and although I haven’t played my shaman and warrior in ages I am very doubtful warrior at least has been reduced to 3.

Me personally mostly farming mogs in old content.
its peaceful and relaxing.
I dont have the personality for competitive play. It keeps me on edge and annoyed.
Even farming ghost iron ore for an hour is more fun than Id have with raiding or M+
