How do Mythic dungeons work?

Hello! I am a newer player, and have journeyed my way to level 120 mostly by running dungeons.
I have been playing through Heroic dungeons for quite some time now, and have raised my item level to 403.
Looking in my adventure guide, I see now that there are no longer any major loot upgrades for me in Heroic level dungeons, and it is beginning to recommend Mythic difficulty to me.

This is fine and all, but I am incredibly confused as to how they actually work. I see that you cannot directly queue for them in the dungeon finder, instead having to use the premade groups feature.
When viewing this page, it is nothing but groups with a number or two, with a plus sign next to it (for example, 8+, 10+, etc).
I have no idea what this means.

Also, do I need to bring anything in order to participate? What is this keystone I keep hearing about?

I thank you for your time.

What you’ll want to do, and preferably in a guild setting so you’ll have people patient enough to teach you, is to run mythic 0s, which is basically running in with the setting on mythic (right click on your portrait and look for dungeon difficulty). Complete the last boss and a keystone will drop, which will tell you the dungeon, the key level (2 if you did an m0) and the affix of the key. If you go to the dungeon the key is for you’ll see a font of power you can click on where you can activate the key, that will activate a timed and difficulty scaled version of the dungeon. You can go to wow head for more info on the ilvl loot that drops and the mechanics of the dungeons because unlike heroic these mechanics will actually kill you and fast if you don’t obey them.

With the patch dropping in less than a week, it’s almost worth it to just wait and do world quests and emissary quests and then do some more heroics as the loot will increase to 415 in heroics. As of now m0-10 reward 400-430 gear with one item in your loot box (a box will open every Tuesday morning by the scouting map room) that will be at least 10 ilvl above the content you completed (m2-m10, 415-440). When the patch comes m0-m15 will reward 430-475 gear with a guaranteed corrupted piece in your chest.

Latest tests are showing that to not be the case.
The chest appears as if it has the highest chance to give a piece of corrupted gear, but it is not guaranteed.

So what is it giving? Just gear of the highest key achieved? I haven’t done any m+ on the ptr, I’ve only tested the intro quests and visions. I’m just going off of what the patch notes and youtubers have stated.

Gear, residuum, and AP based off the highest key completed.

Gear has a high chance of rolling corruption from the looks of things.

Edit - Found the post where someone chain copied a character 100 times and looted the chest. Their corruption % chance was about 20%.

https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/feedback-m-cache-and-corruption-i-opened-100-m-caches-heres-what-i-got/392780/18

Apparently the people saying it’s 100% is based off a WoWhead test where they got everything corrupted. We might have to wait to actually see what happens. We might know for sure as soon as Tuesday hits, although they might not change that aspect of it until Awakened hits.

That would be the equivalent of timing a key this week and then opening it next week though, wouldn’t it? As opposed to timing a key and opening the box next season? I’m unsure if that’ll make any kind of difference.

Actually, click your link and look at the OPs edit.

The next difficulty after Heroic is Mythic. Anyone can start a group for a Mythic dungeon. (Some folks refer to this as Mythic 0, Mythic 1, or base Mythic.)

When you complete the dungeon you’ll get a Keystone in your backpack which says, for example, Freehold +2. This lets you set the difficulty even harder and adds a countdown timer to the dungeon. The higher the number, the greater the difficulty. Beat the timer, get a higher key. Lose the timer, get a smaller key.

At levels 2, 4, 7, and 10 the Keystone adds another ‘layer’ of difficulty called an Affix. Each affix does something unique to make the dungeon even more painful and annoying. The higher the key, the better the loot (the cap is currently +10).

Loot doesn’t drop at all until you complete the dungeon; all loot is found in the treasure chest at the final boss. Every weekly reset you get an additional treasure chest at your capital city with a guaranteed piece of loot.

Btw, people get increasingly picky about who they invite to higher keys, which is to be expected, because they want to ensure success.

Is it possible to do the same dungeon more than once? I just started doing mythics yesterday and was wondering about this…

A mythic 0 (no key) can be done once per week. Mythic Plus can be done infinite times.

m0 got weekly lockout for loot for each dungeon. So you may continue queue the same dungeon, but no further loot will be given. Meanwhile M+ dungeon you can queue as much as you can, and hope at the end of the dungeon give you the loot, as only +15 and above guarantee each team member a piece of gear loot.

When you finish a mythic 0 level, depend on time completed, if your bag doesn’t had any keystone, at the end of the dungeon, you can loot a keystone from the final boss, +1 or +2 level depend on how fast your group finish the dungeon. Unlike normal or heroic level dungeon, at the entrance of each mythic level dungeon, there is a object called “font of power” appeared. You can insert your keystone to start the mythic dungeon in mythic+ mode, where there is a timer to count how fast you complete the dungeon. If you cannot finish it within time, your keystone level will be downgraded by 1 and randomly changed to other dungeon, if you finish it within timer, depend on how much time remained, your keystone level will be upgraded +1, +2 or +3 level.

Those +8, +10 is the level of difficulty of mythic+ dungeon, as the level increase, the mobs/boss health and attack will be increase according to the level, so some dungeon mechanics will be very deadly if you not pay attention too.

At +2, +4, +7 and +10 level, blizzard will add a new modification to the mythic+ dungeon to make it more annoying or difficult for you to finish it. This is called affix. Currently in this expansion, +2 will always be either tyrannical (boss had increased health & attack) or fortified (mobs had more health & attack). +4 & +7 will have additional different mix of affix for each week. +10 will add a seasonal affix where each season will had completely different affix compare to +2, +4 and +7.

The higher the level of mythic+ dungeon you completed, the higher of item level of gear you can loot at the loot box at end of the dungeon. It will capped at +10 for 430 item level. Depend on how high the level you completed, on next Tuesday morning, there is a mythic challenger cache appear at capital city (boralus/zuldazar), you can open it for a gear that always guaranteed 10 level upgrade (warforged), with base gear level base on the highest level you completed last week. It will also give you a new keystone with different affix (with level of -1 to the highest level you completed on last week) to further challenge it. The cache also give you azerite power (amount depend on last week performance again) and titan residium. Titan residium is used to buy azerite gear at the transmog section of capital city, as you can’t get any azerite gear in mythic+ and mythic challenger cache.

Keep in mind the scaling on these dungeons starts pretty slow until you pass +10 (which roughly doubles enemy stats), and most of the difficulty up to then is piled into the affixes themselves. Mythic 0 has been so outpaced by gear power that it’s barely above Heroic. Up to a +6 or so is pretty readily puggable – and only slightly harder than outright brute forceable – once you know the routes. But +7 and up you’ll probably want a guild or friend group, because pugs tend to royally dumpster fire affixes by the time the third one piles in.

let the record show it can be DONE multiple times. but you only get loot the first time.

Right, and that loot is per boss and not attached to a specific instance ID. So if you somehow manage to get a group that epic fails an M0 so badly that they don’t finish, you can do it again – the bosses you already looted can’t be looted by you, but the new ones can.

A stupid question but, can I always put my keystone on the font or is it allowed just one key from one player? Can more than one player put the keystone in the font?

Whatever dungeon you visit you need the appropriate keystone for that dungeon, regardless of its difficulty number.

That key can come from you or someone else, but that person must be in the party and everyone in your group must be inside before the person can put in the key and hit the start button, otherwise the game will give you an error that all party members must be present. Once the timer is going you are not allowed to replace party members, though having someone leave (as is common sometimes in ragequits) will not stop the run.

It’s always one key for one run. Any time after starting the timer you can have people zone out and the person who started the run can right click on their portrait and select “reset instances” to clear the timer. This is a common method of quickly dropping the difficulty level of a particular key without rerolling to a different dungeon, as a keystone only has a chance of being a different dungeon when you finish the dungeon (meet enemy forces requirement and kill all bosses). Hitting start after key insertion will always drop the difficulty level of that keystone down by one regardless of anything else you do.

Join a guild. Mythics are actually quite enjoyable with people who don’t bolt at the first sign of a less than perfect run (which is what you’ll run across almost daily if you go the pug route).

Basically what crossbless say.

When you get your first keystone from mythic 0 level dungeon, the keystone will not just show the level of difficulty (+1 or +2), it will also show the name of the dungeon the keystone can be used. For example, if your keystone is +2 Freehold, your keystone can only be used on mythic level Freehold dungeon.

The font of power can only accept one keystone from your group, which normally is from the person that open group in custom group LFD.

When you activate your keystone in mythic+, the keystone in your bag will be replaced by -1 level of the keystone of the same dungeon. So when you activated +2 Freehold dungeon, keystone in your bag will be replaced by +1 Freehold keystone. So if you didn’t finish the dungeon due to various issue (too difficult for your group, or someone rage quit midway). You can exit and redo the same dungeon with -1 level difficulty. But if your group able to finish the dungeon but can’t finish it under par time, your keystone will be downgraded -1 level as well but it will randomly changed to other dungeon.

During mythic+ mode is on, unlike mythic 0 level, boss and mobs won’t drop any loot, the loot cache will only appear at final boss room after you finish the dungeon (every boss killed + enough number of mobs killed). And from the cache you have chance loot 1 gear from all the possible gear that your class/spec can wear in that particular dungeon.

Final thing i want to say was, with patch 8.3 will be activated in less than 24 hour, so next season of mythic+, the warforged/titanforged loot system will be replaced by corruption system. So ignore warfored/titanforged gear upgrade that i mentioned in the first post in this thread.

if you dont complete the Mythic dungeon on time what do you lose? just the higher key and io score but loot ilvl and number of loot stays the same?

Correct, you only drop the key one level.
