Idk if I accidently changed a setting but every new whisper and message i get auto creates a new window and I end up getting like 10 new chat windows opened at once. I don’t like it.

There is a setting when you right click General on your chat window.

Kyzera has a fantastic guide! You can also set it from the in-game chat tabs under settings.
I have seen a few threads today saying that this has happened without players selecting it. Not sure why.

It changes back to “new tab” sometimes. I’m not sure why. I reported it in game when it happened to me.

I think it has been a thing since pre-patch? Maybe it was a new default Blizzard wanted so people didn’t miss the Whispers.
One of the patches in the last week seems to have enabled it by default.

Whispers (both B/net and private) are now opening up SEPARATE WINDOWS. This happens each time I get a new whisper from someone. Extremely annoying.
PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO TURN THIS OFF!
The directions are in this thread, including a screen shot of the page to show where the setting is located.
