I’m literally ripping my hair out. When I talk to chromie to start questing in Cataclysm zones, she tells me to check the Command board, yet they give me quests for Vanilla zones. Why the hell cant I get a quest to start my journey to Vashj’ir or Hyjal? When I try to start in Northrend zones, she tells me where to go, but for cataclysm, its nothing. Dead silence. Where the HELL do I get these QUESTS?! It is not in my adventurer’s log.
You can’t.
Vashj’ir, Hyjal, and the other Cata leveling zones require level 30. When you select Cataclysm with Chromie it puts you into the revamped Vanilla since that was in Cata and at level 30 you can go to Vashj’ir. I assume its cause flying unlocks at 30 and some of those zones flying is used a lot.
You can check Wowhead for all the level requirements, although its a lot more open zones still have requirements.

So much for being able to choose your own adventure. Thanks for telling me.
Did you expect them to rework those zones to no longer require flying?
Cata zones designed with flying in mind. Flying unlocks at 30.
I forgot about the flying aspect. I havent played in years, forgive me.
You are forgiven, go in peace.
It is slightly misleading when they were constantly saying you can level 10-50 in every zone but since Cata had flying in the zones at launch it makes sense. Vashjir I guess couldve been unlocked though
Yes, it is extremely misleading. It could have at least told me that I need level 30 before starting cataclysm zones, instead it made me believe I could and didnt indicate otherwise.
A single zone won’t have enough content to get you all the way to 50 anyway. Or if there is I’m not familiar with it.
What ive done on an alt is start in Legion and get artifact appearances, start towards Legionfall mount with the orderhall campaign, then at 30 went to Hyjal since its one of my favorites.
Honestly yeah they could have broken each of the zones up to be some level 10 like Vashj’ir and Mount Hyjal since they require minimal amounts of flying, with the rest of it at level 30.
I expected them to let me fly at level 10, tbh. Kinda annoying I earned WoD, Legion, and BfA pathfinder, but cant fly for most of the leveling experience now
I wouldn’t mind if they made it clearer that Cata = Vanilla -> Cata too. But it’s not like you’re stuck there if you don’t want to level in the old world, just pick a different era.
The unfortunate fact though as stated upthread is that all those zones except Vash’jir were designed to need flying, or at least be a much better experience with flying. Even if you can technically get around Hyjal and Vash’jir without it, (a) not having it makes the former a really bad experience, and (b) cramming everyone who picked Cata into just one or two zones for 20 levels is also not a great experience.
Vanilla doesnt exist in Retail. Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor are Cataclysm.
Look, I know forums thrive on pedantry, but my meaning should be obvious. When people pick “Cataclysm zones” from Chromie’s menu, a nontrivial amount of them are thinking only of the 80-85 zones, just like the OP did, so being explicit that they mean the broader definition of “Cataclysm” helps everyone.
I mean that would be nice I agree. But Bliz hates flying and would rather we not have it at all.
When you get the quest to ride the mercenary ship, it LITERALLY SPAWNS ONTOP OF THE LEGION SHIP, I thought mine timewalking was bugged for about 15 mins before realizing this
Surely there are better, more fiery topics to raise from the grave, necromancer.
