How do GDKPs work?

My mage main is in a social guild that doesn’t raid. I’d still love to progress the character and am thinking of doing so through GDKP raids. I’m trying to figure out how they typically work.

The mage has the engineering goggles, the Spellfire set, the Gladiators Spellblade, and an offhand from Kara. Rest is pre-raid bis blues. Everything is gemmed and I’m working on enchants. I’ve only been in Kara, and have not set foot in SSC or TK. I’ll be as prepared as YouTube videos can make me.

Would I be ok to join a typical GDKP as a buyer for T5 pieces? I say “typical” because I imagine rules and expectations vary. Im not sure if they are more carries or if they’re regular pugs with a specific loot distribution rule.

Just want to make sure I’m not going to be a drag. Thanks!

Gdkps work by:

First spilting people into 3 category’s

The main two are buyers and carry’s the third is lesser used and should expect to not have many of these and that’s a half carry norm used for people needed for key buffs that a carry is not taking so they get carry status with less gear.

A carry is expected to be there with full consumes and as much power on there toons as possible parse high and pull there weight in spades. Meaning if your not vastly outgearing the content and likly not needing more than 1-3 items likly needing 0 for main spec and if buying any it’s for offspec your not likly a carry. Those players get a cut for sure but can have cut reduces or removed for late of preformance.

Buyers. Those guys got gold and lots of it often require 10plus k or more. They may or may not get a cut of the pool abd are expected to bid on upgrades.

Buyers are expected to do exactly nothing if you do more great but there is literly nothing expected of you but to spend gold. Honesty you dying at the start of the fight can be considered great as sometimes a player alive can be worse but a buyer will never be found as useless or a drag of there spending gold.

Half carry is a mix between norm with lower gold requirements still required to bid on upgrades but lower preformance requirements to get a cut. These players norm get a cut.

You than stack as many buyers as possible with a few Carry’s with half carry to make up the diff in order to clear. At the end the logs are looked at and the gold is spilt between those that get a cut by that raids rules.

By the sounds of your gear you are likly to be a buyer mabye a half carry in a newer gdkp so likly to not get a cut unless a newer gdkp and likly expected to bring a lot of gold.

Thanks very much! It seems I don’t have the gear to be a carry nor enough gold to be a buyer.

I’ll continue to farm both and see where this goes. Thanks for the very helpful description!

Kara gbids tend to be cheap, and you’re geared enough to probably get a cut too. Keep an eye out for those ones

The 10k number for buyers is really based on group. Eg know one on my realm that has 20 k min but others use 10k for a pure buyer ie no cut but almost garentees a raid spot but the largly fill with half buyers with only a 1k min gold req.

If low on gold suggest looking for ones that are more filling with buyers vs pure buyers as some will use those words vs half carry and buyer. Norm the newer the gdkp the more half carry’s they have as they are to carry heavy due to lack of buyer options so taking people that would buy less and as such need less gold to at least get some buyers in there is better than looking for pure buyers. Older gdkp groups have whales for buyers making them take more pure buyers and less half carry’s.

As a note a half Carry norm would be anyone that pulls there weight and is given a cut but not one of overgeares Carry’s that are only there for the payout and to make the run work.

Well you pay money for gear, sometimes people hr items, but usually put gold in the pot as it were. If you want to join as a mage buyer, you can as you describe, but you can also join mh trash runs as well since the rep will free a ring slot. Generally join any p1 raids you can. As for p2 don’t be afraid to ask for a gear check, generally close to p1 bis is expected for p2. (there are also items crafted with hearts of darkness)

The items are auctioned off and the money goes into a pot that is divided back out to the raid, basically paying people for their time if they don’t get anything. This can be nice for random raids but it is generally not used for a guild’s main raid because you want the gold spent on improving performance, not just being traded around.
