How come nobody uses the Work Order system?

back in df i would post public all the time and get 5 star stuff. in tww i did 1 got a garbage rank and had to waste gold. it just wasnt worth it when i could just post in guild and get them r5 every time. blizard is always taking 1 step forward and then sprinting backwards when they make changes.

Because you can’t set the minimum quality for the items.

The only thing I ever do public order for is things that have no quality, such as enchanted crests.

people monitor and refresh them. public orders get snatched up quickly.

Really just depends on the profession. Blacksmithing is always popping off and was a great choice this xpac with everyone crafting weapons.

Have made gold cap in 3 months with a resourcefulness build on blacksmithing.

My patrons are posting lots of orders. They expect a lot of me and not offering much in return, but I guess that’s better than not posting at all.

(Now and then I do see some orders posted; they tend to come in big waves and get sniped down quickly)

They are still used, less so right now as it is moving towards the end of this season/patch cycle, and it is December which means folks play games less and busier with other things. Add on top of that stuff like Hardcore Classic still being interested, some news about Season of Discovery, and that Knowledge Points aren’t as useful right now anymore … you see fewer crafting orders.

Try on Tuesdays and you’ll see 'em every now and then, but again less so now due to where we are in the patch cycle.

People could also support you with a like and subscribe, or watch your award-winning documentaries on nebula.

(sorry, couldn’t resist)

Only public work orders I make are for enchanted gilded crests since it has no quality. Anything else goes to a homie who I know is making me a rank 5.

It is odd, because the system is a good idea to help crafters make profit and also give people a way to get things they want, but I guess the way Blizzard went about it was not good. I do not know how they could have done it better, but maybe having the ability to make it easier and do it through the Auction House would improve things. It could be because folks are too lazy, or because they do not want to interact with others, I am not sure. There is certainly no shortage of people wanting things and crafters advertising on my server though.

Treatises (and Contracts?) don’t have a quality… you can use the lowest quality mats to get these from an Inscriber, which is the OP’s topic production items.

Either people aren’t looking for those things or there are “pro” inscribers sitting on the work-bench the entire time they’re logged in and they snipe the orders before you can see them. That was certainly a thing in DF which is why Patron Orders were introduced (to just let casual crafters fulfill the weekly crafting crest without competing against pro snipers).

System would be much better if they abandoned “server identity built through Trade Chat” and just put crafting order in a system like the AH where you can set the ask price to get crafts made and buyers can put a bid price on what they’re willing to pay for a craft, or just use a "market’ order if you’re willing to take the mid-point of the bid/ask spread and just get a match quickly, while still being able to set a minimum quality.

That would be so much better imo, but it’s a fair amount of work and I’m sure they think personal orders and “hawking in Trade Chat” is working just fine.

It is really easy to make it better.

  1. No more quality/ranks. Everything is the same quality minus enchanted crests.
  2. If #1 “has” to exist, public orders get to select their quality and for the order to be fulfilled, it has to be reached at the expense of the crafter. Obviously everyone is going to want max hence why it should be gone altogether.

Edit - A third option but much more work
3. Crafters can list themselves as open to work and buyers can see what they can make and at what quality along with notes on what the crafter charges and the order is made into a private order

Well the system is absolute garbage and nobody wants to use it.

Mats are way too expensive to risk getting low quality products out of the work order system.

Most people avoid it because they want top quality and place the order with a good tip and specific instructions. Then some schmo who is just looking to do a daily ignores the comments, makes it a 3 instead of a 5, and now the person who placed the order has to get it recrafted. Personal orders are a success, and the order system for public use should be at a 5 only with no lower crafting options.

Those “solutions” all make things worse

It’s because the public work order system doesn’t allow us to set minimum quality levels. I don’t even have any profession equipment because of that.

And you can’t order things that can be put on the AH

Like, if there was a system where someone could use their mats and put up a commission fee for a Gleeful Glamour, or a specific enchant, or a 3* flask, I’d gladly do it, but because those are AHable, they can’t be ordered.

You sure did sway me with those convincing arguments

Ish? There’s a lot less demand for work orders than Blizzard imagined I think, at least as far as public work orders go.

I personally use my alts to craft a vast majority of the things I need, so I don’t really have to use public orders, and that might be the case for a lot of players. If there is something that I can’t make, generally a friend will have it covered.
