How are you meant to approach arena as a new player/alt?

Even skirmishes are disgusting with the imbalance. Its common for 20-30k hp toons to come up against fully stacked 40k hp with 226 weapon mains. Why is this a thing? Better yet, why are these players in skirmishes? It really is just a deterrent for truly new players to try and gear up when they will get smashed 9/10 games. There NEEDS to be scaling put into unrated pvp so you can at least get your foot in the door and get some honor points without playing against 30+ renown, 40k hp, 226 weapon, fully enchanted turbo nerds. I say this from the perspective of a 220+ main who gets unfairly matched in skirms during my weekly quests as well as from the perspective of my alt who gets absolutely deep dicked in skirms.

teams will often warmup in skirmishes, especially those formed in LFG

They might also be there just for fun

Unfortunately, skirms are not what you think they are. You might believe they’re meant for new players and those who can’t do rated yet, but you’d be wrong.

There’s that weekly quest that asks you to get 1000 honor from skirmishes, and so players of all ilvls and skill levels will be queuing skirms to get it done. My teams and I will also use skirms as a warmup for our real games if we haven’t played for a while, or are trying a new comp or strat before risking our rating.

That being said, skirms are painful for anyone solo queuing. I highly recommend doing your weekly with some friends to increase your chances of winning.

q rat bracket til you get close to full conquest gear. Could either renown or honor gear to 197 while you work on your conq pieces. Once you’re at least 200ilvl, pushing challenger is a bit easier, and pushing 1800 will depend on whose qing.

Did this on my spriest & hpal, and working on it on my arms. You can def compete to challenger and rival in 200illvl gear. 170-190 you’ll just be losing games due to gear, but you can’t get tilted due to gear discrepancies.

Skirms are for anyone to test out new ideas, obtain synergy with their team, try out new specs/characters, or just enjoy some arena with no strings attached.

Gear will always be a factor in an MMORPG where the sole function of the game is to build a character up and that includes a gear grind.

Game wants you to prepare for PvP as you would any encounter. For PvP the threshold is higher i’ll admit, but getting upset about an imbalance in skirms is kind of silly. Skirms are for everyone and there’s no real loss to losing, and a very minor gain to winning (outside of the weekly quest).

I didn’t know that you’re entitled to get a foot into the door for end game competitive content.

Go get some gear and come back.

Also this arguement is dumb. New players are gonna be 1k-1400 and the amount of fully duelist geared players down there is exaggeration

Ya the game sucks. The barrier for entry is also the reward (gear/gear).

Spend 20$ to enter. You may win 20$!

There are so many things wrong with this comment I don’t even know where to begin.

Ok so if you read the OP, I stated there should be a way to get your foot into door into UNRATED PvP SO YOU CAN GEAR (as a new player or alt). This whole “entitlement, get geared, dumb argument” nonsense makes no sense. Very typical of a wannabe elitist sub 2k loser to come in here just talking nonsense and rubbishing a valid point about how fresh toons face the most ridiculous matchups trying to get into PvP

Do you even have an alt or have you played one lately? if not and your dk is your main you should stop being so elitist, your achievements are nothing to brag about and your whole comment just reeks of ego and mediocrity.

How typical of the wow community to react this way when looking out for the new players at all. WoW is a dying game and arena is a dying part of a dying game, we should be encouraging new participation in any way we can not acting all rough and elitist about some noob getting 197 ilvl gear for christs sake.

My fault for expecting an intelligent response on the wow forums

Just buy the boost like everyone else and let the game die while blizz laughs to the bank.

That name is great, how long did it take to add all the special characters?

Legit all I would want to see change is the amount of honour you gain for a win AND loss in unrated pvp as well as maybe lowering the honour requirement for gear from the vendor. Also increase chance of renown gain from unrated pvp. We are already like 9/10ths of the way there.

Like 2-3 minutes finding variations to the base letters, pasting into a document one by one and then all together into wow name field. Did it about 4ish years ago.

You need to lose a lot like everyone else had to do. Everyone who is amazing got owned for a long time before they got good. I remember in Cata my friend and I wouldn’t play with Mitchjones because he was bad. He had like 10k games played. By the end of Season one he was glad I’m pretty sure. I missed it by 30 rating. Someone is only bad until they learn.

Ok well I implore you and anyone else missing the entire point of this post to try gearing up a fresh 60 in pvp and see how you go.

I know how it is. Spending time farming honor for 197s (37k honor for 2H spec to fill in pieces not covered by covenant). You do the math on how long that takes. And during that entire time you think to yourself why am I spending that much time on gear that still won’t be decent to compete by the time you are done.

So then you think yourself how can I somehow (while not getting a handout or paying for a boost) get 200-210 gear for extra effort (obviously) but skip the worthless step of going for subpar 197s.

And I’ll tell there isn’t one, without paying for a boost, relying upon good friends, getting lucky streaks with RBGs or spending gold on 4x 226s (or 213s if more cash strapped).

It’s not hard at all especially if you’re a healer. Get 60, spend a day or two farming catch-up Renown then mindlessly farm honor in BGs/EBGs until you have a full set of 196 PvP gear. That gear is plenty to get you into the 1600 bracket where you can then upgrade to 213, which is plenty to take you to the top.

That’s what I did.

Playing a fresh 60 healer to bruteforce a 197 set after hours and hours of farming unrated bgs sounds like actual gameplay hell. If there was a bit more of an honour gain among the wins and losses it wouldn’t be so bad but as it stands, it’s far too slow and it gets worse every week because of power creep and your relative weakness compared to the playerbase.

None of this is an issue at all on my main, its just for alts and new players like some of my friends who have tried getting into the game.

Yes, skirmishes are end game content.

Ok so basically the answer is just bend over and take it til you manage to scrape together enough currency to buy enough pieces to prevent you from getting straight up one-shot.

I still think the rate which you gain honor in unrated pvp is far too low.
