Homophobia is now non-cannon

Low key but if I had a magic wand that I could wave that, say, would just remove murder from the world with no questions or fuss and we would never have to deal with it ever again…

… I’m not about to get caught up on “but then humans will never understand why murder is bad”

The character creation screen.

sad death knight noises

Jokes aside, this is a very good point. Not everyone finds catharsis in virtualized “And take that!” moments representative of the grievances they’ve suffered. Victims of various appalling circumstances deserve to opt in to that sort of thing, not have it assumed that they’d be into it and watch it slowly invade their escapism with a vague assurance that they’ll totally like it when they see the antagonists get their comeuppance in a very nuanced and well written way (lol).

I can’t believe this has to be said but I’m glad Bodwyn said it so eloquently.

I wonder if people will eventually be able to understand that “The concept of homophobia never existed in WoW in the first place and the only thing that’s changed is that we have word of dev to confirm it”

I mean the answer is no but still…

I mentioned that they could address it previously in NPC dialogue. Have a homophobic Orc or Human be shown their comeuppance, have one see the errors of their ways. Guild Wars 2 did something similar with a trans NPC and people seemed to like that. The argument was swept aside though by saying that it would just galvanize RPers to still be homophobic by giving them an in-game example of a homophobic NPC. Problem is, whether you have an in-game example or not, people are still going to be jerks to you about it online or not because homophobia is a state of mind, and you’ll still see these types of RPers. Have fun trying to convince one of them that they’re wrong because Blizzard said it “doesn’t actually exist.”

As by claiming to be bothered, there’s a misconception that I’m somehow bothered or annoyed by this. I’m not, only a fool would place any stock into this game’s lore. I’m simply calling it what it is, cheap pandering that’s only meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Judging by this thread, it worked.

I’m gonna be frank here but I think it’s infinitely more powerful and mature for Blizzard to stand up and put their foot down than construct some nonsense in universe comeuppance. Being able to address homophobia, racism, sexism, or whatever else by just saying “no, and begone” seems clearer and more direct.

Anyone from the lgbtq+ are free to correct me here.

as a gay person, it’s weird to see mostly cishet authors on their takes on marginalization of LGBT people in their fantasy universes. like i don’t think it’s a bad thing to have homophobia in your fantasy setting, for instance, b/c as someone who experiences it I am going to write about what my lived experiences. but it’s always about the faith of how it’s written.

and to put it bluntly, most of y’all RP’ing homophobia are not doing it in good faith or even writing it well at all.

edit: also my pansexual blood elf has three children and he still dates men. when are your straight blood elves having children? (god i hate that argument of “the sin’dorei must reproduce!!!”)

This is the take. If they invented an NPC to be homophobic, and another to say “hey, uhhmm stop, or. Yeah.” Then it exists and some people don’t like it, but others are down for it. That’s how it is in real life though, huh? I don’t see how the right move for them should’ve been to make it an issue when they could just say “nah, people are way too busy almost dying to give a s*** about who people sleep with.” Like. Pandering or not, it’s a net positive move. I’d rather no one in the real world be homophobic, transphobic, or vilify anyone in the LGBT community, but, oh, my hometown exists. I’d choose people not caring at all what two or more consenting adults do in their free time, but here we are.

Homeboy also didn’t address my example basically refuting mandated reproduction, nor did they provide accounts of implied homophobia in lore. Yeah, I’m out on this, no intelligent discourse to be found.

when is koltira/thassarian being made canon BLIZZARD

No need to canonize something that’s already true. Birds fly, grass grows, Koltira x Thassarian is real. Universal constants.

Why does both sides get into attacking each other, making personal insults and Namecalling. That’s why these threads gets into anarchy with no outcome.

tru tru

tbh stellagosa and valtrois would also be a good one to make canon if we’re being optimistic and not realizing that we’re probably… just getting one or two lgbt characters/pairings.

I will not stand by and have someone demand to know why I won’t be more tolerant of the intolerant. When one side requests humanity and the other side demands erasure I’m not really here to debate without more heat than a Frost DK should have.

I am not demanding anything. I just see more animosity between both groups increasing with no outcome.

I don’t know what you intend by this but buddy, “no outcome” has nothing to do with the animosity.

to add on to population arguments: i like the assumption that every heterosexual couple can/will reproduce. like my demon hunter doesn’t have a choice about whether or not she wants to have kids even though she dates men (and had a choice before she became a demon hunter). or that a society that has magic or space travel can’t just get someone pregnant magically or with technology.

y’all are transparent about hating gay people when you don’t even realize it hasn’t been required for dfab people to have sex to have babies for… years, irl. you honestly don’t think azeroth, which has magic gender-changing potions, would have ways of having kids without heterosexuality?

Homophobia has never made sense ever in this universe. Any amount of extreme argument and disagreement is all rather very personal sounding and I feel says more about the person defending their right to hate something that has no real impact on the person in question.

This world is medieval inspired, some lacking in technology, beautiful displays of magic and wonder, cryptic wizards and grand adventures. It’s as fantasy as we can get. And sure, people are individuals, and people as individuals may have thoughts and feelings that are negative, but in this universe, they are extreme minority in the context of this topic and will be looked at mild disgust as you’re ignored on the side of the street.
Lore is something I love to dive into, and those who love it just as much should be feeling the same way that this is something that really makes no sense. Think of the root of where a lot of homophobia came from in our world, a lot of being religious in roots and the long list of things unique to us. To try and force that into Azeroth when it wasn’t created with that at its base, where values on Azeroth are different, belief, religions , family and so on.

Forcing something like this feels as out of place as people who think orcs would fall into this category when orcs have always been equal in their roles. Value strength and honor among their fellow orc, fighting side by side no matter whos with them and showing sadness and affection to those they care about. People who boast about lore would see this.

I think saying a statement as big as ‘This thing can never exist and is now non-canon’ is a bit too broad, and I don’t think that is what the post meant. But I do feel very happy something was sad, and if this sifts out people who are mad they can’t be hateful in a world where that thought would be a minority then I feel thats good. A fanbase that is called toxic suddenly just got much less so because the apples are seeing themselves out.

Hope you’re all well, don’t let this topic weigh you all down too much and remember to take care of yourself. Have lunch, take a shower, drink some water, don’t forget medication if you have it and relax.

I imagine that some races would be pretty homophobic, while others wouldn’t even care.

Does it matter? not really, this is mostly a pr stunt by Blizzard
