Holy Pally is a better DPS spec than Ret

  1. More Intellect for more Holy Spell Damage
  2. Improved BOW and Lasting Judgement. Never go OOM.
  3. Divine Factor + Holy Shock. Guaranteed crit and mana back.
  4. Holy’s 31 point talent actually does damage while Ret’s 31 point talent isnt a damage ability.
  5. Consecration for aoe dps.
  6. There is no holy resist in the game why there are a lot of physical damage reduction.
  7. You can DPS with a sword and board. If you pull aggro you can still block and high damage mitigation. Or you can even off tank.
  8. You can off heal with full effectiveness.

My Critadin used to pull a ton of DPS when I wasn’t busy healing and still was able to do decent DPS many times I that I was. I frequently used to rank top 2 heals and top 8 DPS in Zul’Gurub runs when we did the AoE heavy spider and bat areas

Edit: I also used to tank/heal 3 man Strat runs with a Mage and Hunter friend

Regardless of the intent of this thread, I’ve seen people say similar things about a Ret Paladin having access to Imp BoM so I have to wonder:

Why do people act like first row talents are exclusive to that tree?

Depends on how far in each tree you go imo. Deep ret gives you 10% bonus holy (sanctity aura), 6% bonus damage with 2 handers and 15% bonus holy and physical damage after a crit. Im not seeing much past consecrate in holy that really matters for damage.

Holy shock and better mana management. Plus if you’re going ret youre stacking STR not INT.

Does holy shock really outweigh 21% physical and 25% holy damage though?
Edit: updated correct holy bonus from sanctity aura and vengeance.

Ok, but some people want to be Ret for the lore.

Lore > min-maxing

Block… With 5%?

That shield, unless you have stacked defense is only truely good for extra armor.

You ain’t blocking much as holy.

Even spell ret with MCPs?

It doesn’t.

If the spell damage build ends up being worthwhile, you’ll still be going Retribution for Vengeance + Sanctity Aura.

Holy Shock’s cooldown in Vanilla is way too long to be worthwhile for sustained DPS.

Stop. Just please stop. You might be right that holy is better than ret for dps - I wouldn’t be surprised frankly. But lets be clear: you aren’t offhealing with this build. You’re offdpsing.

Honestly the best paladin spec in general is 21 holy 30 ret, get all the healing talents that matter and can still reck someones face in PVP. Other specs are min maxing and you’re going to spend a lot on respecs.

Yeah that’s what I actually played in Vanilla.

It’s a solid all around spec.

lasting judgement sucks if you plan to use judge on cooldown for you know… damage

I really hope you’re referring to more crit and more mana to cast spells… This isn’t retail.

Yes crit chance. More damage.

Oh, nice. Enjoy your ZG runs and stacking spellpower over +healing. Best of luck to you!

  1. Ret can also get that talent and, with the spelladin build will have similar int.
  2. Any holy pally could really bring imp BoW, lasting judgment is bad for damage because it’s meant to let you have to judge less.
  3. Divine Favor only gives mana back on heals through illumination. On top of that, it costs mana to use.
  4. Ret’s 31 point talent can let them do increased damage on applicable mobs when using it in conjunction with SoC. It has synergy.
  5. Ret paladins get consecration.
  6. There is level based spell resist which does affect holy damage. But all that is not that big of a deal because a spelladin type ret deals most their damage via holy damage anyways. If you want to talk about AP ret, well, all physical DPS have to deal with that and there are also debuffs to help with that.
  7. Ret could do this too and they’d hold better threat than a holy paladin that’s wearing healing gear that does not affect their damaging spells.
  8. Spelladin ret heals pretty good, it has both the healing and spell damage to do both in the same gear.

31 points into ret is a pure PVP spec, not even really a good on IMO, better off with a free crit heal, and its certainly not a DPS increase worth noting. I also don’t recommend using consecrate to DPS with in classic, lol.
