I have randomly been getting high world MS spikes that last from a few minutes to hours. My home latency stays at 30 ms while the world will shoot up to 350 and stay there. Here is a 10 minute WinMTR test from just now:

Same here. It’s been happening for weeks for me:

Still looking for help with this if possible. Thanks.
Hi Exalter
The only thing we see is this latency spike on the Time Warner ISP.
Hard to say if that means anything or not. What you describe looks more like a possible UI issue to me. As a test you might try playing on the default UI.
As I mentioned this is a test. If it doesn’t help simply remove the OLD from your original folders then delete the new folders the game installed. This will return your original settings
Hi Tratt,
Thanks for the reply. isn’t the 14% loss also a concern?

As for it being a UI issue I am sure that’s not the case. I experience noticeable lag in battlegrounds or instanced PvP while I have none while in the open world on my home server. This makes sense because my home latency is ~30 ms while my world will be ~350.
Once the signal hits the backbone it is difficult to say what the readings mean. In most cases it is just big backbone switches ignoring low priority ping requests. Perhaps security protocols in place on the switch. Really the WinMTR is most accurate for home network diagnosis. After that it’s usefulness falls off fast.
This Blizzard switch in Chicago is showing near 4 second latency spike. Is it real - likely not as we see those all the time. Switch taking it’s own sweet time returning a ping request is all.

What you look for with packet loss is a steady loss on each switch down the line. If you look you will see that the packet loss is limited to one switch. Sure sign it doesn’t mean anything.

OK thanks. So if it’s Time Warner/Spectrum then what would you recommend I do? I don’t have high hopes calling their general tech support line telling them I have high ping results from a WinMTR report and believe it’s their fault. Will they even know what I am talking about?
Did you run the default UI to test things. I would start there - despite that one latency spike on the ISP your connection looks okay. I would start there then work through this support page:
Open the Advanced Troubleshooting section as well.
It’s 100% not a UI issue. Everything is lagged when my world latency spikes. Also if it was anything related to my home hardware/setup like the “advanced troublehooting” steps suggest it would affect my home latency as well.
This specifically affects world latency only and it’s intermittent. If I am in a BG and it happens everything is unresponsive/laggy. As soon as I leave it and am on my home server again I still have high world latency/low home latency and everything is very responsive with no issues.
This appears to be an issue with my ISP correct? If so I am just wondering why it would not also impact my home world latency? I guess I don’t understand how the routing is done when WoW connects me to a different server in a BG. If it is my ISP then I would think it would be impacting a lot of people.
I can’t say this is a ISP issue. All I see is one packet lost on home network and a latency spike on the Charter ISP - overall Charter looks good - average mid 30ms.
You are mistaken regarding the Home reading. That has nothing to do with your Home. It is a low bandwidth realm specific meter. Things like chat - mail - AH. Really kinda pointless and the name confuses folk. All you care about is World.
We need to rule the UI out here. It is the very first step - it is a simple enough test to perform. You won’t lose your settings unless it shows a problem and you need to rebuild it.
You can return your addon settings afterwards if you still see this latency on a default UI. You simply remove the OLD from your original folders and then delete the new default folders the game installed.
Hi Tratt,
Thanks for continuing to work with me on this. I am not 100% sure what the “home” ms means, but I can say this with certainty and ask that you trust I am intelligent enough to accurately perceive what is happening:
If I have high “world” ms and low “home” ms when I am in a Battleground my game is extremely laggy and unresponsive.
If I have high “world” ms and low “home” ms when I am in a major city waiting for the next BG there is zero lag and the game is extremely responsive.
The next time I see this happening I will try your suggestion of using the default UI however I can’t for the life of me think of how that would cause this but I am willing to try so we can rule it out.
I will update this thread with what I find out however I am not sure the forum rules will allow me to post twice in a row (a restriction that should be removed for this specific sub-forum). So I am not sure you will be notified if I edit this post with my results.
Yes the forum rule is a pain. Take my word for it all home tells you is that your Realm functions are either laggy or not. Mail and chat - AH workings. These BG lag threads are almost always addons. If you have an addon manager such as Twitch uninstall for the test.

Before you play do this:
On occasion while doing Bg’s or Dungeons I will get the high world ms up to 450. Once I do the above it stops happening. I do it after I notice a high world ms and it pretty much clears it up for me.

Just an update: I was in a BG and had the high world latency issue again. Logged out, made copies of my WTF, Interface, and Cache folders then deleted them. Also flushed my DNS and renewed my IP. Logged back in and still had the same issue. Played until the end of the BG with no change (everything laggy with 370+ ms).
Still looking for help with this issue if possible. Thanks.
This is still happening multiple times per day. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi again Exalter
Try working through all the steps on this support page. Some you have already tried:
Expand the Advanced Troubleshooting section as well.

Same issue basically, in last month here…

This is the same line that is high on my WinMTR.

This is very frustrating as it keeps happening. I can sit in Org for an hour with zero issues, but as soon as I inter a BG my world MS continues to keep climbing and the game is laggy and unplayable. I will go through each of the troubleshooting steps 1 by 1.
-
Reset your user interface to make sure your files and addons are not corrupted.
*** I played the game with zero addons and completely fresh UI and settings. This same issue still occurred.**
-
Reset your network devices to make sure your router hasn’t become flooded with data.
*** I have reset my router by unplugging it, waiting 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in. This did not help.**
-
Release and renew your IP and flush your DNS to resolve any network conflicts.
*** I have done this and it did not resolve my issue.**
-
Update your drivers and operating system to resolve any compatibility issues.
*** I updated Windows and updated my graphics card driver. Everything is up to date as of 2 days ago. The issue still occurs.**
- If you’re using a wireless connection, optimize your internet connection to rule out a connection issue.
*** I played with a wired connection.**
-
Close all other applications to resolve software conflicts and free up resources.
*** Nothing is open but World of Warcraft.**
Advanced Troubleshooting
- If you’re using a VPN, try removing it.
*** I do not use a VPN.**
-
Disable any proxies that may interfere with the login module.
*** I do not use a proxy.**
-
Run a security scan to remove any viruses or malware infections.
*** I run a security scan daily and have no known viruses or other security issues.**
-
Update or temporarily uninstall any security programs, which may mistakenly identify the login module as a security threat.
*** I use Windows Security. There is no reason to believe it is negatively impacting WoW or any reason to believe it would only affect battlegrounds.**
- Old firmware on your modem and router can cause issues with complex game connections. Visit the manufacturer’s website for instructions on how to apply firmware updates.
*** My router firmware is the latest version.**
If I had to guess the game is somehow routing my connection differently when I enter a battleground and this is what’s causing the issue. I have seen them do similar things in the past. In fact just recently (within the last few months) they were routing people to west coast servers by accident after a maintenance window. This is almost assuredly an issue on Blizzards side. Please look into it.
