High Latency / Lag Spikes

Ever since the launch of Shadowlands I have been running into high latency and massive lag spikes occurring up to every 10-20 seconds. Will happen when I’m out in the world a lot but more frequently in dungeons, mythics and raids. Everyone will run in place, and I cannot do anything for about 2-5 seconds normally. Sometimes even close to 10 seconds of standing there. This happens like I said about every 10 or so seconds. Makes this game unplayable.

I am a longtime player of 14 or so years that plays a lot of end game content. I have scoured the internet and done everything that they have asked to fix these problems. Even deleting all addons and my addon manager, going from one addon to the next turning them off seeing maybe if it was an addon. Nope. Resetting my interface by labeling old cache folders old? Nope. Updating driver or WIFI adapter? Nope up to date. Resetting my router? Nope.

My girlfriend is in the same office I am in sitting next to me playing on her desktop and has NONE of these problems. How can this be? I have also gotten a newer and nicer network adapter to see if that is the problem, no fix.

I do not have this problem with ANY other game. I pay for 1000 mbps internet and on average my computer alone is receiving about 400mbps. I have now been kicked from groups and cannot gear my character nor prepare for the upcoming raid with my guild mates. I am out of things to try and extremely frustrated.

Same issue. I just started experiencing high lag spikes two days ago, and now the game has been unplayable for me. I log in and it’s fine for about 5 minutes or so until latency spikes up to 1000+ ms and doesn’t stop increasing.

I’ve also tried deleting/turning addons on and off/updating them. Again, this just started within the past few days. I had zero issues on the first few days during and after launch with everything enabled.

My roommate is across the way from me and playing on his desktop with little to no issues. He gets an occasional lag spike or two in dungeons and that’s it. Might be worth noting he also plays on a different server than I do.

I am in the exact same boat

+1 here. Getting random spikes where everything freezes for 3-7 seconds. This happens once a minute or so. It’s making the experience miserable. All other devices in my household work fine. I have GB internet connection. I have a Ryzen 9/RTX 3080 build with 64 GB of RAM, 2TB M.2 SSD so I know it isn’t the hardware. I followed all the support steps (remove addons, cycle network, flush DNS. Nothing is helping.

I’ve been getting the same exact thing!!! It makes it so frustrating trying to play the game. I am truly hoping this gets fixed soon.

I’m glad not alone guys! Seems like it is a problem that is affecting lots of people! Keep back and let me know how it’s going for you all in the coming days

If someone else in your house is playing just fine, then I’d first make sure you’ve done all the steps of a full UI reset. I know you said you have, just making sure you got all 3 folders at the same time and tested without re-installing any of them. https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/7549

If that doesn’t work, let’s check your connection just to make sure it looks ok. run a winmtr for 10-15 minutes according to these instructions and post. Highlight it and hit the </> button at the top of the reply box to make it more readable. https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/27780

This might not help everyone; but after plugging in my ethernet cable I’ve only been experiencing rare lag spikes. Consider being wired for a bit if you have the option.

omg, been looking for a ppl with the same issue, i play on a latin american server, and i get constant lag spikes like every 3min for about 2-5 sec, not happend to me before shadowlands, on bgs or dungeons is worst, constant 85 ms Home, but World goes crazy like 250-500ms while instanced.

It’s happening to me as well. I usually sit at around 22ms Home/World but it has been jumping up to 400-500. Every other game has worked fine.

Completely uninstalled while I wait for a fix

Same thing for me on Zil’jun for the last few days on a new rebuild and full clean install. My latency is usually around 300ish and spikes up to 2000+ randomly and then drops. The game is really not enjoyable or playable at all like this.

Howdy y’all,

If another computer in the house works fine, then it’s likely something happening on the main computer. As mentioned previously, make sure you are testing a wired connection directly to the modem. If you still continue to experience latency spikes, please create your own individual thread and include a WinMTR test:

  1. Download WinMTR
  2. Unzip the file to your desktop
  3. Run the WinMTR as Admin
  4. Type your region IP in “host”.
  5. Click “Start” and open the game. Let the MTR test run for at least 10 minutes to capture this issue occurring.
  6. Click “Copy text to clipboard”
  7. Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between: ~~~~ Paste WinMTR Test Results Here ~~~~

Note: If it’s not letting you post, break links by adding a space before .com/.net, so you can post them. You can also upload the MTR contents through Pastebin and post the link (ex: Pastebin (dot) com/123456).

In your step 4, the IP of World of Warcraft US Central times out. Is there an updated IP?

I tested this from my side and it appears to be working. Are you referring to the ‘No response from host’ lines?

It looks like there is some packet loss happening:
|host-69-144-131-253.bzm-mt.client.bresnan.net - :x:6 :x: | 1351 | 1281 | 9 | 12 | 41 | 13 |

This is likely affecting your connection and seems to be happening on the ISP route. You may need to contact them to have this investigated. In the mean time, I would suggest testing another network like a mobile hotspot or a free VPN to compare the difference.

Yeah I’m on Zul’Jin as well and the same thing happens to me. Doing a fresh install once more and if it doesn’t work, I’m saying screw it.

I can literally connect to any other game just fine but this one. I shouldn’t be getting latency spikes up into 500 range when I usually sit at a comfortable 30

I posted mine as a new topic, please assist! thank you

I’ve had the same issue but only when I group up.

doing a fresh install is basically never necessary to address latency issues. doing a full UI reset is all that’s necessary on that end, as instructed here https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/7549 and after that you should begin troubleshooting your internet connection.
