Lightforged and regular draenei are pretty much interchangeable, thought. There’s almost no story in which one fits and the other doesn’t. So, Blizzard will use one or the other randomly (if they ever need draenei for the story, which they seldom do).
Same with gnomes and mechagnomes. You’ll see them mixed and used interchangeably from now on. But gnomes are used way more often than draenei, as they have their own niche as tinkers and quirky adventurers. They are also great for humor.
Allied races that will keep appearing are those that got fleshed out well: zandalari, nightborne, kul tirans, even highmountain (who got more personality and quirks than regular tauren).
A little Elven Evolution commentary might be appropriate here.
Trolls living by Well of Eternity slowly evolve
Night Elves which include a Highborne caste evolve from those Trolls
Highborne refuse to stop using arcane, Azshara loses her mind, listens to Xavius and tries to summon Sargeras to Azeroth - opening the door to the Legion and then…KAPOW!…Sundering. Right about now the Highborne of Suramar are pulling their covers over their heads and hiding under a dome…they’ll pop out 10,000 years later.
No more Well of Eternity
Night Elves formally give Highborne one last “stop with the Arcane, did you not see what happened with Azshara?”
Highborne arcane junkies won’t let it go, decide to impress the low-life Night Elves by unleashing an arcane storm on Ashenvale.
Enough being more than enough - Night Elves execute the Highborne, down to the last…no, wait, that’s not right; Malfurion and Tyrande stupidly let them off with exile.
Highborne leave and head off for new lands…evolving along the way into Thalassian Elves; the High Elves. No more Well of Eternity, Night Elves are living off of Moonwells and exiled Highborne are now living off of the Sunwell and changing into Thalassian Elves (with some notable exceptions in Suramar and a remote enclave).
ARTHAS, WTF?!?
90% of the Thalassian Elves are dead. 90% of those left alive are renamed by their ruler as Blood Elves and begin the process of rebuilding their nation and their people.
-10% of those that are left decide things are just more chill in Stormwind, Dalaran, and a couple of hunting lodges - High Elves
Legion…Suramar Nightborne crawl out from under their covers, changed by 10,000 years of bathing in the Nightwell.
Also Legion-ish & into BfA: Alleria goes Void, Blood Elf researchers delve too deeply, get exiled and ambushed by a Nether Prince, almost turned into ethereals until they are saved by us and Alleria POOF: Void Elves
Yeah. There weren’t supposed to be very many regular Tauren. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Highmountain become the norm. Nightborne are already prominent.
I don’t know that Kul’tirans will be prominent. I think that player model will be used kind of interchangeably for large humans.
Given how big a deal getting KT to rejoin the alliance was, I wouldn’t be shocked if we don’t see more KT forces in the future, including a scrappy young lady.
Tidesages are kinda like the highmountain river shamans or eagle riders: a niche in which the race excels and there’s no competition.
Whenever we get some story involves shamanism and the sea, tidesage NPCs will be Blizzard’s first thought, unless the particular setting favors another race more.
Now, kul tiran thonspeakers will most likely disappear unless they join the cenarion circle. There’s so many druid choices out there, and the thornspeakers lack depth to make them unique in any story capacity. All their uniqueness lies in their forms, and that can’t carry a story. Even in Kul Tiras their roles were very limited, almost an afterthought.
