So I’ve played WoW for 16 years or so, yet I mainly stuck to classes I thought, anyway I knew. That said I want to try different gameplay styles, which will result in a reroll. I’ve never really tried a mage, of any spec…other then in WoD, but I want to talk classic tbc going into wrath. So what’s fun? Arcane, Fire, Frost? All? What are your reasons?
Druid also seems appealing but I hear the lvl 1-20 isn’t fun, if you disagree let me know and why.
Lastly Warlock, ok so I did get a lock to 24ish but I don’t remember much, and out of the 3, seem the least appealing as I’m not the kind of person who likes to pay attention to THAT many dots, hehe.
So – out of Mage, Druid, Lock…and their specs whats fun? I don’t see myself raiding, nor pvp…just simply dailies and the questing experiences with a few dungeons. That said I’m super casual so my idea of fun may be different. I’m open to any spec for each of these classes, or a hybrid of sorts.
My main characters for the majority of retail (TBC - Shadowlands) were mage and druid. My main since day one of Classic has been this warlock.
Druids are fun as hell once you get to level 20. Before level 20 it’s a bit slow and tedious, but 1-20 is pretty quick, so I wouldn’t make a decision based on that. The utility of druids in end-game content cannot be overstated. You can do anything (tank, heal, dps) and in WotLK all druids specs are amazing. Feral becomes a major dps contender and boomkin is super strong as well. A very solid choice that gets even better in WotLK.
Warlocks are great DPS, but in my opinion, they get boring after a while. Since summon stones exist, warlock utility isn’t nearly as important as it was in Classic when you were the go-to guy for summoning, but it’s still handy. Affliction is the top PvE warlock spec in WotLK, so if you aren’t a person that likes DoT classes a warlock probably isn’t for you. I fall into this category, which is the main reason I am swapping for WotLK.
Mages will always be god-tier. You can print food and water and you are the only person that isn’t bound by your hearthstone cooldown. Go wherever you want, whenever you want, and get there faster than anyone else. Arcane and frost are okay, but fire is awesome and insanely strong in WotLK. The amount of aoe a fire mage can put out is almost unmatched. Super-strong, outstanding utility, super fun to play = very solid pick.
For me, it would be a toss-up between druid and mage. Both are very strong in combat and have tons of out-of-combat utility.
I dont think I can count how many times I’ve tried to start a mage, because I think they look so fun at higher level. But man, I just can’t seem to get out of those early levels where you just spam frost bolt over and over
This was the post I was looking for. I think I’m going to try Druid and Mage both to lvl 15 or so, perhaps lvl both, not sure. Either way I should have an idea just based on the talent trees as to what I think is fun. Thanks!
I’m a casual as well (insofar as I rarely raid) and I play pretty much only 2 toons: mage and druid. Really can’t go wrong either way but I’d give the nod to mage. As with all classes, there is nuance with mages but its pretty straight forward gameplay and the perks of free food/water and ease of travel is just incredibly nice. Since you may be solo alot 1-60 I’d recommend Frost (or 1-70 if this will be a WotLK reroll) and then consider switching to Fire. Frost gives you so much survivability with plenty of killing power for out-in-the-wild questing. Then if you want to switch to Fire to blast some dungeons go for it, Fire performs really well in 5 mans…but remaining Frost is still viable for dungeons too and is generally considered the best PvP spec as well if you like to do any of that. Arcane is high-powered as well but seems to be more reliant on gear you won’t have access to unless you raid…if you casual then Fire is your best bet for big dps spec. I would also strongly recommend taking tailoring/enchanting and keeping up with each as you go. You can make a pretty strong max level mage with the high end tailoring and heroic badge gear.
There is simply too many of them imho. oversaturated classes due to being meta.
Druids are awesome, and it gives you an opportunity to play any role you want, especually during leveling. Leveling as feral isn’t all that bad.
It’d be a lot easier to find group as a healer. Druid healers are really really solid and even better in Wrath!
Every time I host a dungeon group, I get about 10 Warlock whispers, 7 Mage whispers, 5 hunters and 3 ret paladins.
I can’t speak to mages, but if you’re gonna try a Druid you need to go to at least level 20 in order to get a real feel for the class. Doesn’t really feel like a Druid until you have cat form.
Really kind of have to go til ferocious bite imo which I believe is around level 30. When I leveled my druid it didn’t feel worthwhile to use the bleed finisher (rip?) since the mob would be pretty much dead by the time I had combo points up. Its nice having cat form kill speed and the attack speed is great, but the lack of a strong finisher is kind of lame for early leveling.
Of the 3 classes listed druid is definitely the late bloomer in terms of actually feeling like the class you will be at max level. You can probably get a good feel for most of warlock by level 16 and mage by level 22 (if you don’t pvp of course) but druid doesn’t really get all its stuff put together until at least the mid 30s and maybe even as late as 50 and 62 for mangle/lifebloom.
Warlock you can go destro if you’re obsessed with like being a shadow/dark mage (who also has fire).
But as was previously mentioned, the mage utility…just so much more fun/convenient compared to the lock.
Druid has great versatility. super easy to level once you get cat form.
if you know you wanna be a caster, I’d say go mage. if you’re feeling undecided on the role and/or like to mix things up, go druid. I’d put warlock a distant third.
