I don’t think it’s an issue of whether it makes sense for characters to have a backpack. It’s more to do with how the characters look in game, and how a backpack would look on a character.
The character models have hundreds of animated, moving textures, and a backpack might have four or five, and that’s being generous. But it would cover up the character, obscuring a large portion of it from behind, where the camera is usually pointed while you do things. It wouldn’t look good.
I understand that it’d be optional, but that’s not how animators and programmers will think of it. They’ll think of it as this ugly, rigid thing that doesn’t look good and covers up all their hard work.
Which is why I doubt it’ll happen, at least in the scale people are asking for here. It’s easily possible they make you a knapsack or a satchel transmog eventually.

got 2 kinds of belts with 3 different colors for each… one of em even has a knife!

just think it be neat to see a visable bag and now people know what I carry. Blade sharpener,hair gel,explosives since I dabble in the tinkering. Sure,I can acknowledge the game has a few issues needing fixing but I’m always for a potentially fun item to jazz up the game. ^.^

That is exactly how I feel about backpacks in WoW.
Covers up what? We’re not asking for something huge that takes up more space than a short cloak does. And cloaks barely move either. Especially the short ones. They don’t move at all.
I have backpacks in Rift and they don’t have movement. Sometimes something in them moves, but that’s it.
If they can have a small short cloak, they can create a backpack.
I don’t think anyone is looking for one that’s the oversized obnoxious setting like what they did with weapons now.

I really don’t get why anyone would want another item added that is so obviously inappropriate for the level of societal development otherwise represented in WoW. Especially one as ugly as a backpack. It’s bad enough they put in rocket mounts, and motorcycles and other “modern day” items in a game that is obviously not meant to be in modern times.
And don’t get me started on Pandas…
So, the highmountain tauren racial set can mog a cloak to a friggin totem pole but we cant have backpacks? What I see is the usual /it takes effort so we cant. Cloaks are basically useless and not many people like them with transmogs because they clip through everything. let’s just get rid of them and add a backpack slot and remove the bag bar

A backpack option sounds awesome. Have a rolled up mattress type thingy strapped to the bottom. Ah, the great outdoors.

You have got to be kidding me. And how would we get to our inventory then? Open our character panel and click our backpack (cloak) slot? Yea that is really convenient.

No but it’s a fantasy setting and they carried bags to help get on that journey, not to mention all the travelling we do, the constant luggage we carry with us.

Yes they carried bags. Not modern day military style backpacks.
You don’t really want us to be bogged down with all the items we “carry around”, do you? Because we would not only have bags, but would have to drag a cart around for the meat and gear and other items we pick up along the way.
Imagine what we would look like running around the world with big backpacks and pulling a cart around.

it’s still a backpack even if you call it a bag…
i am not suggesting a modern backpack used in the army, survival kits or even a spider man backpack that kids use.
not a modern day one, but a medieval type of one that is made out of leather and normally comes in the color of what type they are used.
even if it’s a bag, it’s still a backpack if you put it on your back.
