Dear general discussion. I need help. I want to make my mage a Dark Iron for the cosmetics. (unlocking heritage armor on another toon) But the racials just scream useless, and void elves scream “very good” for a caster.
Please convince me the racials really aren’t a big deal and I would at least still have some fun with the Dark Iron racials. Just convince me to I’m not dumb for wanting a Dark Iron Mage! Thank you!

How about this: If you don’t play a DI Mage, I’m gonna beat you up.
My mage is a void elf and this character is my main. I have had much more use of using fireblood to help purge annoying stuff off me and combined with having mole machine it helps get to some places you won’t have a mage portal to reach as well if you make one. You ain’t dumb for playing something you wanna play.
If you play a DI mage, I’ll beat you up.

fireblood is just overall good for everyone imo
and forged in flames help you survive when a rogue stun locks you.
of course there are better races for a mage, but I don’t think dark iron is the worst.
EDIT: but in pve you probably won’t get much use out of their racials except dungeon delver.
The maximum differential between dark iron and void elf DPS sims is only 90 dps in favor of void elf, where the dark iron racial also brings with it an element of survivability.
EDIT: Extra detail: Dark iron sims 7th overall for races while void elf is #3, but again the difference is negligible.
The problem is you’re trying to combine aesthetics and racials…That’s what the whole 2 faction thing is about.
I’ve been playing for almost 13 years.
Racials are not a big deal unless you are absolutely obsessed with top-of-the-line PVE and PVP.
My own Dark Iron is a Warlock. I made a Dark Iron Warlock because I wanted a Dark Iron Warlock.
In terms of racials, that Mole Machine racial? You’ll be the king/queen of transportation as a Mage.
The Fireblood one is a good CD. Gives me 18 INT basic, at lv20. Good for dispelling all sorts of nasties off of you, too.
Who cares about min/maxing lol. Min/Maxing is what is responsible for the death of this game. Why don’t you play a character you’ll feel happy to log onto and just play?

If I ever take this mage to Alliance, it will definitely be a Fire specced Dark Iron and this is how I plan on having him look.
Maybe this would be something of a motivator? They can look pretty awesome.
Thank you all for the responses. Dark Iron it is. The utility from fireblood more than makes up for a less than 100 DPS difference to me. Also, I just think dark irons look awesome. Thanks again.
Racials really don’t matter in the long run. I main as a Mag’har orc, so trust me on this one. I know. 
You have fifty spaces for characters. Make both.

Why be an elf when you could be a fire blooded fire dwarf that shoots fire?
Don’t let racials stop you from making a character that speaks to you. Honestly the I put more weight in the “fun” racials than the combat ones. (Dark Iron have on of the best with their mole machines).
