If you care much about lore, Dark Irons were the “Mage Clan” amongst the dwarves. In fact, they were so good at magic that they broke the seal on the Firelands placed by a Titan Watcher and brought Ragnaros into the mortal realm. Sure, it turned Blackrock Mountain (then known as Thaurissan) into a volcano and turned the surrounding lands into a charred wasteland, but that goes to show they can mess with powerful magic.

Dark Irons were the only clan to practice magic of all sorts openly, whereas Bronzebeards pretty much just had priests and paladins thanks to their dealings with mankind, and Wildhammers had shamans.
Bronzebeard Dwarves only got access to Mage and Warlock after the Dark Irons joined the Alliance back in Cataclysm.

If you aren’t qualifying for the MDI, going for rank 1 gladiator (top 0.1%), or already cleared mythic BoD what race you are just really doesn’t matter.
Play what you want and have fun. Its a game after all.
I have a lvl 120 Void Elf warrior. Is it optimum? No, but it is fun. Who cares about racials anymore? They make very little difference.

I had no concept of racials when I rolled this toon. I just liked Drizzt Do’Urden. They tell me I’m OP now in MDI…but I don’t care because I’ll never run MDI.

Weird, I have 32 toons, I have one of each class of Zandalari and the rest are Darkspear. I only play trolls. I have honestly never even considered or cared about racials. I would say play what you want. It’s an alien concept to me to play something for a racial lol

If you play a race/class combo for the racials, you’re going to be very disappointed.
They are negligible at the end of the day. If you’re doing things correctly, your racials won’t help much. If you’re doing things incorrectly, your racials won’t help much.

Removing harmful Effects and empowering you, it’s a pretty straightforward ability that could benefit any class.

Move Faster While Indoors, Again, straightforward, and benefits any class.

Blacksmithing Skill increased and crafts faster, This deals with your professions, and while blacksmithing isn’t typically taken by mages, crafting certainly is, and if the speed of your crafting is important to you, then this ability is useful.

Mole Machine, while the functionality for a mage is redundant and unnecessary, it is a flavorful way to get around.

Takes less physical damage, Mages can interrupt spells being cast that might deal heavy damage, but if you’re like me and you prefer playing Arcane instead of frost, then you’re not going to be kiting much, except in extreme circumstances, and the target is probably immune to your slow effect anyway. Physical damage resistance is certainly useful when it comes to dealing with melee attackers and surviving more easily.
As for my personal preference, I went with gnome primarily because of the increased mana pool. But Draenei are also a decent choice because of the boosted core stats. Ultimately the racial abilities are negligible at high end, unless it’s an activated ability. In which case you’re looking at the utility of the character’s race over the flavor of it. This is largely why many players chose Human over any other race for a very long time.

I simply do not care what my racials are. Play what you want. You will enjoy yourself much more.

I mean in terms of lore the Dark Irons are probably best known for warrior and mage as the Dark Irons are the arcane scholars and spellcasters of the Dwarven race and that was their primary advantage.
