Thought I’d try asking this here, as the regular Arena forums seem to be more of a place to be toxic to one another, and WOTLK posts mostly get ignored –
Any help would be greatly appreciated. A few questions as a Disc Priest who’s struggling with positioning in arenas in WOTLK:
1.) Watching RMP v.s. mirror comp from the Priest POV. In the opener, the Rogue is stealthing waiting near the eye, trying to catch the other Rogue. While he’s doing that and they’re waiting for eye to pop, the Priest and Mage are saying “get off pillar, get off pillar”, and avoiding their pillar and giving each other ~15yds between one another. They’re also checking to see if the other team is hugging their pillar. Why? Is it due to being rooted and having to spend globals spamming Dispel, or…? What disadvantage does hugging the pillar have?
2.) Ruins of Lordaeron is my worst map by far. When is it more advantageous to play on crypt vs play in the room and why? With a lot of LoS and odd pathing on the crypt (both with terrain difference and four pillars), it creates a lot of issues trying to free-cast. I feel like the trek from the starting room to crypt is further than on other maps, and once I’m on the crypt, I’m stuck hugging it and kiting around corners for most of the game. Do any other areas other than the crypt and the small cutout in the starting room provide LoS? When is it more advantageous to play crypt vs room? Or is it comp-dependent?
3.) Specifically v.s. Warrior, Feral or DK teams, I have a difficult time keeping up with healing if they’re able to stay glued to me, and at lower ratings it seems like all they do is tunnel me. It’s much more of a problem in 2s. How do you manage the damage? Or should they just be peeled as much as possible? Is it a case of me needing to play more offensively and push into the enemy healer for Fears / Burns / etc. so they need to play defensively? I just have a very hard time maintaining any level of momentum.
Appreciate any pointers in advance. If there’s anything I can clarify, let me know.
Thanks!
Horde. Mostly playing with folks from the LFG tool (which seem to be a LOT of DKs and Rogues), so I’m trying to figure out how much of my issues are a them, us, or me problem.
I was spoiled in that a lot of my arena experience is from Cata/MoP through Legion, and as a healer, positioning was far more forgiving.
I haven’t pvp’d in years but I’m assuming if you get hard CC’d behind a pillar out of LoS of your team it would make it harder for your teamates to help you…etc for example cant MD…etc Versus melee you also prob want as much room to work with as possible. So staying in crypts vs a melee comp will just make it easier for them to lock you down. I played disc during MoP and I can’t remember it getting easier, if anything it’s even worse because most classes have speed abilities and WW monks who stick to you like glue. MoP was one of the worst balanced xpacs for priests imo. They gave us feathers to help with our mobility issues but they don’t prevent slows so they were basically useless. I remember the top rated priest even making forums explaining how hard it is to play a priest high rating in MoP. Not sure what comp you said you run but a mage/rogue or class than can hard peel for you would be best.
Warriors have Mortal Strike and hamstring… very deadly combo as one can be spammed and the other nerfs your heals so you can’t away… have to bubble and spam heals and hope your teammate kills them quick…
in 3s if they connect you wont be able to heal.
the goal is to not let them connect at all
if you play dpr i suggest you bait berserker rages rotating fear and gouge to open space, and if you are by yourself against a warrior(specially in blades edge and sewers) to bait kicks with mind control.
ferals shouldnt kill you super fast without their priest sitting ontop of you i think, maybe have your dps peel the priest?
dks stay near your dps and abuse POM, maybe save blind for garg and make sure to keep abolish disease up, abuse the big aoe instant heal too after penance shield pom renew combo, POM will be insanely high healing against dks. also you only should get gibbed during strang hoj garg combo, so make sure to organize your gameplay to survive that.
It’s been a very long time since I did any competitive PVP as a Priest, but back in the day I remember one of the keys of Priest healing in arena was to get very good at juking interrupts. Start casting a heal, then right when you think your opponent will try to pummel it, stop the cast and make them waste pummel. Then you’re free to cast or force another CC from them which puts them even further behind in CCs/CDs. You can also cast Mind Control which a bad opponent will interrupt, leaving you free to cast Holy spells.
