So I went and spent quite a bit of gold upgrading the heirloom gear to scale to level 120, only to see that it is still at ilvl 170, but the azerite gear I just got is at 280. That is quite a big difference in ilvl, so I am left wondering what was the point of spending several thousands to upgrade my heirloom gear if the azerite gear is better. Anyone else notice this, or have feedback?
The heirlooms scale with your level, just as they have always done in the past. At level 120 heirlooms will have an ilvl if 284. Don’t get so held up by the ilvl. You can very easily level to 120 without having any azerite armor, and just for today you can level using timewalking (event ends tomorrow morning). A great event that scales you back down to ilvl 100 and in most cases is actually easier to level than doing bfa quests or IEs to level.
Take it this way would rather have underpowered azerite (as most leveling azerite is) help you kill things faster but you sacrifice 30% extra experience to get to cap? Or would have that extra experience and things take like 1-2% longer to kill? For me I would rather take the latter.
Again don’t get held up by ilvl of gear.
As an added note I’ve leveled up 4 characters using timewalking. Two with the tbc a few weeks ago and 2 yesterday with heirlooms. Way more enjoyable experience, and I got to play a roll that I wish I perfected in legion for the mage tower: holy priest! So that’s my bit of experience with timewalking and heirlooms
Scuse please: Are the heirloom upgrades at the vendor in Ironforge? I checked the vendors in Boralus but they didn’t have them.
For horde they are in undercity. Sorry I can’t help ya out for alliance. Try wowhead or youtube.
The main vendor (level upgrade guy) has always been in ironforge since patch 6.1.
Ok thanks. For some reason I thought they might be in Boralus too having been added this expac and there being that vendor that sells the new heirlooms.
I’ll teleport myself to Ironforge later.
I’d pick heirlooms since they scale with you. Worry about gear once your at 120.
The point of spending the gold is because the azerite gear doesn’t give you exp and the heirloom gear does. If leveling faster isn’t important than you, then don’t spend the money.
That said, what I have been doing:
Most of your leveling experience comes from turning in quests rather than killing things so I made 2 gear sets and put them on my action bars. When I go out to quest I put on my questing set (highest ilvl stuff) and when I am ready to turn my quests in I put on my xp set.
When questing I use azerite gear up till it’s time to turn in quests. Then swap out to heirlooms, turn in, then grab next chunk of quests. Expeditions seems fine in heirlooms. Dungeons may be a bit harder.
Heirlooms have always made a big jump in iLevel when going to the next “tier”.
At 110 the looms are still scaled to Legion but once you ding 111 they’ll jump up to match blue quality gear of your level.
I just slot all the XP loom pieces and ignore Azerite until I cap. The traits while leveling don’t offset the XP boost while killing things. I got from 110 to 115 in 2 hours on my Zandalari Druid running Timewalking with XP pots.
Hey thanks for that information. I’ll wait to see what the looms decide to do when I hit 111.
The XP bonus is still there and you are unlikely to get all three AZ pieces before like 117. Honestly if you are power leveling, stick to your heirloom gear and do the quick route.
Here’s my Druid so you can see the iLevel of the looms at 115.
just do island expeditions .the most fastest way to level up .then worry about gearing at 120lvl .
The only issue is you won’t be able to unlock WQ’s right at 120. I’d suggest doing each zone to Friendly at least as well as the three foothold quests as an addition to the Islands.
As long as it has been done once on a main, you shouldn’t need friendly with alts.
Really? I didn’t know they added that like they had in Legion, Good to know.
Yeah, can’t double check now because maintenance, but I am 99.9% sure my Warlock that hit 120 a couple of days ago didn’t have friendly. She only quested in one zone. Granted I did a couple of invasions while leveling, but I don’t think it would have been enough to push anything to friendly.

Yeah she wasn’t friendly before she started doing WQ at 120.
the heirlooms are currently bugged and giving significantly less stats than they should be
i would not buy them because by the time they are fixed, you’ll be 120.
