I guess some people feel that sensitivity to insults is exclusive to one political ideology. Doesn’t seem really based in reality, but they are being persistent in their argument.

Their interpretations of the rules are what is in question here, not the rules themselves.
Both sides of the political spectrum acknowledge a “no harassment” policy is needed for all companies.
What I’m calling into question is how they interpret their own rules so that calling someone “crazy” is a bannable offense because it’s disparaging to people with mental health problems

In debate, there is a spectrum of acceptability. You can call someone something derogatorily and still be considered civil. Using words like dense, clueless, foolish, incompetent, brash, or obtuse are still within the confines of civil discussion.
It’s when you get to the low level stuff like using words like stupid and idiot that you leave that civility behind.
You can have an intellectual discussion with someone and use a word like “incompetent” which could be considered ‘derogatory’ by your definition, but it is still acceptable for civil discussion.
