Healer done with M+ [Fairly long read]

I know I’m screaming into the void here, but as a healer, I feel I should comment on the state of M+ after having gotten to experience S1 M+, and M+ for the first time as a whole overall in my WoW career since beginning playing the game in '05.

I made the decision to stop doing (read: HEALING) Mythic+ today. Barely any loot, people who don’t do mechanics, people who blame healers for dying (tanks get blamed too, but when we blame the DPS it’s insta-ragequit because they never want to own up to their mistakes and the key is bricked. I just stopped saying anything very quickly to avoid bricking the key), etc.

The last 2 weeks before this were heavily “healer-centric” despite them supposed to not have been healer-centric, but we all know dps gon dps. This week has been okay, but there still needs to be major tuning done on a lot of bosses upwards of +14 keys IMO on Tyrannical. If I had to push it, upwards of and including +16s, definitely.

The amount of time it takes for Blizzard to make ANY changes is astounding IMO. It’s like Blizzard was okay with zipping the power level to 1000% on everything while zeroing everyone else out at the beginning of S2. It’s just not good game design, but far be it from me to comment on that on the fly, since I’d have to really sit down and think about what an actually good solution would be. But you know how to get people to keep going despite it being crappy? A guaranteed piece of loot at the end would go a long way.

The cherry on top is the +14 effects being in the lower keys this week, that was something. That and the “missing affixes” that happened for a short time.

It’s not fun anymore without at least getting loot at the end and I’ve gotten 6 pieces of loot so far, 3 of which I didn’t need for my spec so I just gave it away to someone else who did. Two pieces of loot I got were bis boots, both the same item out of Freehold. a Champion level boots I replaced today with Hero level boots. One piece of loot was bracers that I didn’t replace for quite a while at Champion level. Out of a LOT of runs.

And I know for a fact a lot of you are grinding your butts off out there way more than I am as a healer. I did 3-5 runs a day because that’s all I could mentally handle. And I also know a lot of you have probably gotten LESS loot than I have up to this point. It’s a shame Blizzard is doing… whatever they’re doing to M+ at this point lmao.

As a casual, this is the most “hardcore” I’ve ever played WoW and I gotta say, it’s nice having gear, but compared to last season, well. Last season I started trying M+ at the end and it was great! Loot galore, got geared up quick, started looking for a guild to raid with now that I actually, for once in my life, had gear. It was excellent.

Now I wake up erryday thinking “what if I just skipped M+ today” like I would think about skipping a job I hate going to. It’s not fun anymore. Season 1 was great when I joined at the end but Season 2 is just… terrible. And obviously being “geared up” at the end of a raid tier means that you’re gonna have a power imbalance and runs would be easier, but I really do not think this is the case at this point for S2.

It doesn’t help I haven’t been able to find a guild, but that’s a separate problem entirely here, but if I was running with a dedicated group of people, I don’t know whether or not my outlook would change just based on the dungeon tuning for 16-18s I’ve been doing.

I’ve had some extremely good pugs and some good pugs, it’s true. But for every good pug I’ve had this season I’ve had ten or more bad ones between. But when you’re getting into the 16-20 range and people leave over a wipe, why? I just need the run for vault, pls :sob: Most times there’s more than enough time to finish the dungeon, probably by like a minute or two, but still. I know, I know, “run your own key”.

Yeah, if my key didn’t flip back to back from Brackenhide to Vortex 4 times this season I might, but at this point I’ve given up on my own key. It would be different if I got to select what dungeon I wanted the key to be.

Vortex is so hard I don’t even want to attempt it at 18, much less the wringer I put myself through trying to heal that at 16 for Rainsong, over and over. I even got Beacon of the Beyond (Champion), Screaming Black Dragonscale (Heroic) and Rashok’s Molten Heart (Heroic) before getting Rainsong, lmao. Like come on dude. And I still never got Rainsong.

Tyr is absolutely undoable right now in Tyrannical with snake-lady putting out so much damage and tanks needing precise timing to stun her in 18s, which guess what, 0 tanks know how to do. 16s was at least manageable with the healing but 18s… I don’t even know how to do it lmao. The timing is so tight I can’t even blame groups for leaving when we wipe on her 3 times. I wouldn’t even attempt that dungeon at anything above a 16 on Fort or any other week at this point.

Don’t get me started about the “raise hp above 90% to remove this” dot on first boss in Bracken, ugh.

And those are the only 18s I’ve attempted much less completed this season besides 1 Lair, which fell apart after second wipe because no one understood “attack adds” on first boss.

Blizzard has absolutely wrecked M+ as a whole and it shows in the groups waiting for tanks and healers. Maybe y’all should have listened to your PTR forums and actually tuned accordingly before releasing it to the public. The list of DPS waiting grows larger by the day.

This whole season has been very unappealing to a “casual” player, but I’ve seen such sentiments echoed on the Dungeon/Raid forums as well. It’s absolutely bonkers that Blizzard thinks any of this is okay. I 100% guarantee nobody at Blizzard runs any of this content. No QA, nothing.

But whatever, I’m done with M+ as a healer. If I ever do it again it’s gonna be as a DPS.

To you DPS and tanks who strive to learn and implement knowledge of mechanics in dungeons, and who stick around wipe after wipe to finish the dungeon for completion: You are elite players and I salute you, and I hope great things happen for you in life. I can’t praise you enough. You’re the best.

To the rest of you: Meh. You know who you are.

To whoever is designing the M+ experience at Blizzard: Not even worth saying anything, it’s so bad. Fix it. Take your community feedback into account. Please. I beg you.

To whoever is designing and balancing the raids at Blizzard: You’re cool, raids are fun, fights are the perfect length in N and H (All I’ve done so far), just fix Zskarn please :sob:

I love the WoW community and S2 has just felt like being beaten emotionally every single day and it’s a shame that Blizzard does this to its community. I just can’t do it anymore. I just can’t. Good luck other healers, you are far better people than I. Back to waiting for raid day and farming materials for gold I guess. I’ll check back on M+ in S3, maybe.

you could just run some lower keys, that provide you with the desired difficulty. with infinite scaling, there’s a level for everyone.

ive seen the mount drop more than the trinket
even with most of the group on healer loot spec lol

im likely taking a semi-break from wow due to irl stuff, but the one thing i dont really like about m+ is fort/tyran. remove one, remove both, have both active at once, meet in the middle, idc but i dont like add week vs boss week. just personal preference

The amount of Loot drops truly suck in M+ I agree. As OP said, I’ve run Vortex so many times on two healers and don’t believe Rainsong even exists!

You know, I’ve been thinking of dusting off my healers lately lol I ran last season with my preservation evoker and it was pretty fun. I wanted to try mistweaver again since it’s been some time. Now I’m not so sure. :joy:

M+ drops more loot then raiding per person (2 per 5 vs 1 per 5) AND has no lockout.

The issue is the RNG, and people who want a specific item slam face over and over due to the no lockout thing.

I usually get fill my vault or at least do the 4 for my vault then stop. I’ve never grinded a dungeon for an item. I guess I have done more on season 2 for Wyrm crests to upgrade gear, but i’ve never run M+ for the end drops

Blizzard doesn’t listen to former healers. They only listen to healers that love what they do.

It’s the survivor bias of video games + conservative mindset of “If healers don’t have to work hard healing, they’re lazy and want free epics.”

I’m sure some tanks hated the active mitigation philosophy. What if they took away ignore pain so it could be like the good old days of classic?

Right click, maintain threat, nothing else, you know?

The problem with this season: M+ is too easy. (Also gear is really plentiful.) Had more fun season one when I wasn’t doing 20s week 2. (Did one week one even.)

For the mechanics part I get it, I do feel healers have it pretty rough this time around. I get this from playing both Healer and Tank… For the same key on an equally geared/skilled player, it currently feels waay easier to Tank it than to heal it from my experience (and I’m in theory supposedly a better healer than tank since I’ve been doing it for way longer).

That said I think that your bad experiences are probably enhanced by playing in the 14-16 range, that’s right what I’d call the “keystone hell” range, meaning the mechanics hit hard enough to cause you issues if they are not executed properly but the average player you’ll find tends to not fully understand them yet. It does get better if/when you are able to push a bit higher.

The part I don’t think I can agree on are your feeling about M+ gearing… I’ve found gearing this season the best it’s ever been. Also like how are you complaining about Rainsong when you got the two healing BiS for pretty much every healer AND a beacon of the Beyond which is BiS for Damage… The fact that you have all 3 is extremely lucky…

My Priest has cleared Normal and Heroic every week, now also LFR and I got none of them… Same for my Pally, was able to get Rashocks on that toon but none of the other ones. And despite that I still feel I’ve geared-up waay faster than in previous seasons (it’s just my trinkets that aren’t great and that’s literally because all the best ones come from Raid and I have gotten unlucky there with no option to farm em).

I get it that some times you can have a bad luck streak and not get any drops in your runs but sorry it’s not believable that you have been doing 3-5 dungeons a day and have only gotten 6 pieces of loot (and only 3 useful ones)… I’ve done less than and I’ve got at least 3 pieces for every slot so I’ve even built multiple sets for all the specs and for Raid/M+. Are you like running the same dungeon over and over or something?

+11 was the sweet spot for me. Im comfortable there. The dungeons are easy. The groups form up quickly. You can carry weaker players and still time the dungeon. My point is its never really a slog unless you get very unlucky.

The truth is you just dont need much better gear unless pushing higher and higher into M+. Champ level gear maxes out at like… 437 right? Im cool with that. What else am I even going to do with that gear anyway?

Not telling you what to do OP. Just what works for me.

It can be really easy to get into a grind with Mythics, it’s in our human nature to want to succeed and unfortunately we can allow ourselves to get roped into content like this that isn’t as rewarding as the amount of effort that is put in (especially healing).

This expansion I’ve decided to put mythics on the back burner and work towards more fulfilling game time. I’ve been slacking on achievements and collecting for a long time so that’s my go to for now, as well as running raids on my healer, and I’ve been dabbling with the Ironman challenge (this character).

Ya gotta slow down a bit buddy. Only 40% of the group gets loot and there is a 1/15 - 1/10 chance of having that one piece of loot actually drop. So each run you have 3-5% chance to get the loot. Which is pretty low.

Focus on something other than the gear. Focus on filling your box (this is what I do) or focus on your score.

Also, remember that you’re always improving. Even if a run is a disaster you can still learn something. So while your ilvl doesn’t increase your skill level does.

Lastly, when you have good pugs and moreso when they’re extremely good pugs like you said, ask them for their battle tag. Play with them before you pug. Even if it’s just you and the other person pugging it will be better and much more consistent. And than when you have a group that you run with or a list of people when they get loot you are also more powerful and then you’re winning more often.

Season 2 and the state of toxicity in guilds with rc loot council killed this game for me. The beginning of dragonflight hit so hard and was so good and season 2 just killed the momentum the expac had going for it.

I’m sorry you’re having a bad time. The amount of loot that drops has not changed between Season 1 and Season 2. It’s been four weeks so of course you aren’t going to be maxed out on gear yet. The catalyst isn’t even out.

‘Average’ players are still going to be playing catch up for a while yet. If you just started doing m+ towards the end of season 1 of course you had an easier time and got more loot because most people were on their 3rd or 4th alt at that point. We have months to go on this season. Just hang out in the highest ‘easy’ keys you can do. That level will go up as the season progresses.

Blizzard has hardly changed anything between seasons besides the HP/Damage buffs that didn’t really do anything. It’s all about your experience. Personally I think 20s are way too easy this season, I got 443 ilvl blisteringly fast and I pugged groups for all 8 20 portals the third week. I don’t have a guild and I don’t raid on a schedule. It’s all too easy but that’s good for me since I need time to play Zelda and Diablo.

Edit: look up a community called Casual Friday. They can be found here on the forums, using the in game community finder and on discord. There are always a wide range of key levels happening up to 20s, everyone is usually friendly and they run a mythic+ event on Fridays.

This is still happening :frowning: Happened to me on Saturday.

Welcome to the world of M+ burnout, this happens to a lot of players that play this game. The system is garbage, and once you run enough of it, you will realize it is the same content over and over again with just a few gimmicks to make you think it is fresh content.

M+ is seriously the most boring system I have ever seen implemented into an MMO, the only reason people like it, because you can get raid level loot without the hassle of raiding, but M+ comes with its own set of problems as you seem to be aware of now.

Personally (I speak only for myself here) I am not really enjoying healing in mythic plus anymore myself… I am just not a fan of the new affixes and don’t even know why they had to be changed, the old ones were much better in my opinion.

The loot dropping isn’t really a problem for me i don’t mind running them until i get the desired item but it is really different now because i genuinely dislike these new affixes.

The new incorporeal as a priest i shackle one then the other is ignored and i get blamed

The new Afflicted affix - I dispel one and the other is ignored so i get blamed for that too…

Its just sucked the fun out of it for me and i am giving up myself, was happy to hear they were removing the seasonal affix but it is just such a shame we have new problematic ones.

Its not my fault that my shackle can only be on 1 target and its also not my fault that my de-curse has a cd.

I know it could be avoided by playing in a group but i can only really pug due to my work and being on call.

Meh, wish we could go back to legion mythic plus. The community is also much more toxic now than ever before so if i get shouted at i just leave.

You get one of my last little hearts for the day thanks for typing up all of that.

Healing this season is just something else and has really made me go down the theorycraft rabbit hole for my spec. That being said, I have appreciated the challenge in figuring out how to heal certain bosses (yet to figure out how to melee heal in NL on that damn worm).

Rainsong is something I have yet to see drop but it’s nothing new to just this season. I ran Nok offense 40 times a week for a piece of gear and it took me 2 weeks to get it. The raid is extremely fun and relatively easy this season so I’d recommend farming neltharion for a better chance at a better trinket.

The 16-20s are always the worst keys to pug. Many of the people are toxic or just bad at mechanics, the combination of which is a perfect storm for garbage. I’ve found going over strats for my most feared bosses or packs of trash before the key starts to be what makes the difference. For example, in every brackenhide I start by asking everyone to use their health pots for the first gash frenzy, I can usually have time to hot people up in time for the second. Start uldaman asking if there should be a stun order for snake lady because some players don’t realize that stuns work on her to remove the stacks. On halls of infusion I tell hunters to take the talent to remove slows on disengage for that damn dot from the dragons and to make sure everyone is using defensives and health pots freely during ice lady. These small comments make the dungeon so much easier to heal.

If you are having trouble with throughput, farm 11s for champion gear and wyrm crests to upgrade said gear. Make sure you are full on enchants and get crafted gear to max rank (that spore cloak is insane btw and everyone should have one I love it so much).

And finally, if you are getting burnt out on running keys, take a break! Go hunting for battle pets, maybe run an old raid for a transmog set, look up some guides for easy to get toys you may have missed, do some rep grinding for a faction not yet at max! Best thing about wow is there’s a lot to do without feeling like you’re being left behind. Keys are great but enjoying yourself and not making a job out of a game is far better.

Feel the exact same about keys. It’s an unbalanced nitemare and I refuse to heal keys after the last few times
